  • Knot tying video tutorial. Learn how to make a double constrictor knot. Easy step by step instructions in this guide.
The constrictor knot is an extremely useful knot, which is another knot that should be more widely known and utilized. It is mentioned on numerous occasions in the Ashley Book of Knots (ABoK). Clifford Ashley recommends it for a multitude of purposes from whipping a ropes end to handcuffs to clamping a hose. Master rigger Brion Toss describes it as at least as useful as the bowline knot and "to know the knot is to constantly find uses for it."
It is in the category of binding knots and is very secure and easy to tie. It has a very strong clamping characteristic which gives it it's names sake after the snake. The boa constrictor. To get extreme constriction without hurting your hands it is often suggested to use a marlinespike hitch around a rod or other appropriate object and use those to pull hard.
It is tied very similarly to the clove hitch and if you look at the structure of the knot it has an overhand knot which is locked into place with a riding turn. This demonstration showed the knot tied with an end but it can also be tied on a bight.
related knots include: Clove hitch, transom knot, strangle knot, miller's knot, boa knot, cross constrictor knot.
Uses: replacement for a zip tie. Handcuffs. In spearfishing to tie off speargun bands. Hose clamp. Binding bungee cord. Seizing a hole in a prussic loop to make the carabiner attachment more secure in climbing. Tying off a sack or bag like a millers knot. Tying off slingshot bands. Clamping pieces to be glued.
The main disadvantages of the knot is that it is extremely difficult, or often times impossible to untie. It also needs a curved surface to bind so it is not good for square or flat objects.

This made it so easy. If you want to test the strength of the knot by pulling it tight but still not want to have to cut it to get it off, tie it around the big end of a smooth tapered object. Then slide it down to the narrow end to remove. For example, I tie my knot around a baseball bat. That way I can practice it over and over. Thanks for the clear instruction. Too many others do not give you time enough to go along with it. But your slow approach makes it easy to follow.

    You go slow, you pause,
Giving me time to process and visually follow the rope pattern.
    Well done.

I knew about these knots for my pneumatic hoses at work but I kept putting it off. I decided to get velcro and then I realized I was neglecting this resourceful idea. Procrastination causes a lot of not needed stress. Let me tell ya. Yeah, thanks a lot for this video. It feels like I owe you.

I'm not claiming that I've watched everyone but you are one of the best explainers of knots that I've seen so far because you do it from the point of view as if I was doing it so I don't have to try to constantly turn myself around to make sure I'm doing it right. I I think you understand how confusing the knots can be when you're trying to learn how to tie them. or at least they are, at times, to me. Sometimes I find myself having to watch 5,6,7 times to get it right. And I'm not trying to put down anyone else that does tutorials. I do appreciate your help

I transported a big table today as I departed my apartment building using a hand truck and this knot tied at either end of a single wrap of similar diameter paracord. My neighbor, aghast at the rigging, repeatedly cautioned the load would separate and crash (for effect, I left only an inch of working Paracord dangling from both knots). I responded, _knot a chance_ as I rolled the load with ease down three flights of steps & out the main entrance. Many thanks for a great tutorial.

The fold method for this is rather neat. Make 2 mirrored overhand turns with each end, leaving a little slack between them in the line. Flip each turn over the other's standing end and fold them down towards each other under the slack. The slack should naturally become a loop between the 2 turns and you can pull it down to be the same size as the 2 turns. Insert your object through and cinch it down.

If i have been tying this correctly, then i found one weakness in the knot. The part that goes under the 2 parallel loops will undo it if you pull on the side where it goes over the bar. This also works on the normal constrictor knot too.
Edit: This doesnt really matter because it will not untie under any other circumstances, but if you want a way to undo it quickly i am fairly certain that this will work.

What you call 'bars' are really called riding turns. They ride on top of the overhand knot beneath. Most people just push the free end up through the 'X' (under all turns) to make the overhand knot.

I found that if you put a bite on the end of this knot it comes undone. It's when you go through the last original loop that you add the bite. I haven't tied it to a car or anything, but with a good tug it pops right off. Wording.... Thanks for the vid. :)
