British currency is easier to understand than before; When I studied English for the first time my old English-book had a special page to explain the Uk currency . The pound was divided in twenty shillings and each shilling in twelve pence. It was very tricky!
Decimalisation was a big rip off in the 70's and is only for lazy people ( the French for example! 🤣🤣) there was nothing wrong with the old IMPERIAL SYSTEM, it improved your maths, and there was nothing wrong with IMPERIAL measures too. 🇬🇧👍
Unless you go to Scotland or Northern Ireland. Not sure about Wales but we have different printing banks making them different useful everywhere but England as the bars & stuff are very suspicious of them. Just be were of it.
Hahaha bittersweet feeling but that made me laugh. I'm an English teacher and still watched this video although I didn't learn anything. More a case of keeping myself exposed to the accent I guess. More use in my case than yours albeit rather unnecessary, too.^^
Very informative video, I've been using some of the British money while holidaying there and also when I lived there as an exchange student in 2015. Here in Norway our currency is NOK (Norwegian Kroner).
I have to use the unique "currency", more well-known as woody Putin's rouble. Yes, you understood it right: woody putin's. Sorry for my cockney accent.
In India we have Rupee. And thanks a lot for this video, it was really informative, I loved it a lot. i always had doubts on the British currency, but now it's clear. THANK YOU. :)
Hi Anna, Ariary is our currency in Madagascar in the indian ocean, and 1 euro is equivalent to 4500 Ariary...Thanks a lot for this interesting lesson. By the way, could I ask you some favor ? Please, could you explain on your next video what are the british habits to dress according the event ? Thanks in advance teacher Anna. Bye
Intersting video Anna LOL I converted it into NOK and the price to £1 to 1NOK is 11.30NOK to £1...that's crazy high that the £1 is...BRITIAN'S RICH!!!! 😂🤣 I liked this video yes!!!!👍😅
thanks. you forgot Quid, but i learned enough from this vid. Im an American and im playing watchdogs legion. takes place in london so they use british slang
-Spanish´s National currency is the euro however twenty years ago we had used pesetas. -When i was to her party 50€ notes flying around dancefloor like birds in the sky :) . -He gave me more than 30 coins change, I don´t know what´s think about this. -My credit card got in fire when my girlfriend was into shoes shop.
I did not had a good sleep since Harry suggesting that he will be returning to help the King with a temporary role and this hurt me very much. I thought that he is suggesting the role of a Regent. I love the Royal family and have a library of Royal books and treasures. I shook Princess Margaret’s hand on her visit to British Guiana when I was six years old. I still remember that event like it was yesterday. The school children lined the road and she came out her Land Rover and walked passed as we waved our flags and singing. I was sucking my thumb and she stopped and said to me I looks beautiful in my uniform. She invited me to the party in Georgetown but my parent did not allowed me, only my older siblings went. As British Guiana got independence in 1965, there was a mass exodus to Britain, and later to US and lastly Canada. We migrated then too and some of my siblings never returned. The name of British Guyana was changed to the Republic of Guyana in 1970. Now I notice Guyana have dropped the the word republic and trying to advertise for tourism as British Guiana/ Guyana since the Venezuela threat.
0:42 You almost no longer have to worry in NZ (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_dollar dollars and cents), since we predominantly use cards. If you want to avoid paying cash for taxis, get Ola, Didi or Uber. For buses (cash is no longer accepted, possibly even after the pandemic is over), trains and most ferries, get an AT Hop Card in Auckland, which works the same as Octopus card, but that card can't pay for snacks and soft drinks. If you HAVE to use cash: Orange for $5, Blue is $10, Green is $20, Purple for $50, and Red for $100. 8:33 Our design is almost the same: Polymer notes with windows. Australia also changed to our design as it's difficult to forge and is more durable. For coins, we stopped using 5c coins, so anything that shows 99c, just round up to the nearest 10c (bronze) when you pay cash.
You forgot an important one Quid, people are going to get extremely confused when someone says "10 quid please". Another word is Bob "Do you have a few Bob?" Or in Ulster (N.Ireland) and Scotland 'Bawbee' "Are you saving up all your bawbees?"
Hello Anna, you are in England and you have the pound sterling with all its multiple and submultiples of banknotes and coins ranging from 1 penny up to 100£; I, instead who live in Italy have the € which happens to have a monetary subdivision system perfectly parallel to that of your pound. 1 cent; 2 cents; 5 cents; 10 cents; 20 cents; 50 cents;€ 1; € 2 ( all in coins); then in banknotes € 5; € 10; € 20; € 50; € 100. Actually there would also be the € 200 and € 500 card, but for their high value nobody uses them in normal everyday life, and if you have to make very expensive purchases you use either a casher's check or a bank transfer. In truth, in recent times, payment by magnetic card for small and medium-sized expenses is also spreading as the reason is advanced that this type of payment serves to combat both tax evasion and go around with less risk as if the magetic card is lost, whoever finds it or steals it cannot steal any money due to the fact that you need to know the PIN relating to the card. However, not everyone agrees with this practice as individuals feel to much in control of their personal data and fear for their safety. So this type of payment is not mandatory and to encourage it, the government has instituted a cash prize for those who do a number of transactions with the magnetic system within a certain time.
Cheap is a relative term. For instance, if you want to buy something for 40 thousand dollars, and you have one billion dollars in you account, the price of the car can be cheap for you; but not for a poor person, with nothing in the bank. rsss
May be I am very spoiled person. When I first time listened to lesson I have heard the message: baying sex and drinks in cinema is very expensive. I looked at subtitles and found out : snacks and drinks. Overall I liked lesson very much and please make the lessons for B2 C1 like fire in London
Here in my country Pakistan currency is rupee i.e PKR with 5000 rupees highest currency note and 10 rupees note lowest one. Other currency notes are 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 rupees along with 1, 2, 5 and 10 rupees coins.
🇨🇦 5¢, 10¢, 25¢ ++ =100¢ = 1$. Canada doesn't have a 1$ or 2$ dollar bills (notes in the UK) anymore, which were replaced by coins. Unlike the United States, the 1¢ "penny" doesn't exist anymore. It didn't seem so different when I visited the UK. The colour of the UK "notes" are almost the same colours. The coinage is a little different. For me, cheap = bad quality. Inexpensive is the opposite of expensive, which means it cost a lot of money.
Kuwait was the most confusing to me. Especially because I don't know Arabic. And I'm not used to 4 digit currency. For example a chocolate bar would be 1.230 dinar
While in Mexico , I kinew I had to rely on cash . Not many places used even had a card reader . That was several years ago but most likely still true . I went to any bank and exchanged dollars for pesos . Always asked me for passport
Spelling mistake on screen near the end when Anna is describing the penny. The text on screen reads "broke" but it should be "bronze", as Anna correctly says.
What!!!!???? Nooooooo - that’s so frustrating, I made a note about that for my editor to correct. :( that’s my fault for not double checking the final video.
I don't know how it is in California or New York but us hillbillies we use the word bargain too and it means the exact same thing a bargain is like a good deal like she said it's a good value for your money a bargain a discount we use the same thing as hillbillies
After living in the UK for more than a year, the only way I finally got used to the coins was by working in a takeaway shop 🤣 Oh btw, the appearance of HK dollar is actually quite similar to the UK pounds, but which the value is about 10 times lower than the UK pounds (£1 ~ $10) that's making me broken 🤣
2:38 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EFTPOS#New_Zealand I stopped ordering, then cancelled my EFTPOS card from my bank, because the first time I tried to buy online, I realized it doesn't work as a debit card.

Must've been an old book as the UK decimalised in 1971.
that was before 1971
That’s true : I started to learn English at school, exactly in 1971.
Decimalisation was a big rip off in the 70's and is only for lazy people ( the French for example! 🤣🤣) there was nothing wrong with the old IMPERIAL SYSTEM, it improved your maths, and there was nothing wrong with IMPERIAL measures too. 🇬🇧👍
I think my favorite is the 20 pound note. The purple really pops.
Green in Canada. Our purple is our 10$ bill
Unless you go to Scotland or Northern Ireland. Not sure about Wales but we have different printing banks making them different useful everywhere but England as the bars & stuff are very suspicious of them. Just be were of it.

Professor Anna, Colombia's currency is the Colombian peso.
You are very beautiful; but, today, you're more than usual. I think you are a very good teacher because you have an artist's streak.

Good thing you aren't trying to explain pre-decimal currency and slang for those coins, let alone all the Cockney slang for the notes.
