Orthognathic Surgery: Explained

Orthognathic surgery, from the Greek orthos, "straight" and gnathos, "mandible", is a rather unknown intervention in spite of being the indicated treatment to address widespread problems in the population, such as skeletal #malocclusion, sleep apnea, Open bite, or facial asymmetry, in addition to being used for aesthetic purposes to improve the harmony of the face.

I have a narrow upper palate. I have read that palatal expanders like MSA expand cheekbones. I feel that my face hasn't developed properly as a result of a narrow upper jaw, but if I understand the surgery on the upper jaw doesn't affect the cheekbones? What would you suggest would be an additional treatment if a patient wanted more prominent cheekbones, such that were harmonious to the face. In other words, nothing to wild, just the maximum growth in cheekbones if the face had developed properly.

Is bimax only possible under general anesthesia or there are other options?

Yes, general anesthesia is the only option, but you are closely monitorised during the entire operation and our surgeries tend to be much shorter than in other places, so it's safer.

😅 mild Class III cases can be quite inconspicuous, but their bite tends to rather bother them
