Very unconventional movie that was self contained. Enid was like Daria from Beavis and Butthead and the skeptical and cynical personalities are similar. They aren’t tryhards of being cool, this is a summer that two friends are parting ways growing out of adolescence. Enid has her own brand of humor and they’re in their own microcosm of a personality that’s not mainstream. Enid felt like she wanted to continue with this endless adolescence with a fixed personality but Rebecca can’t let this hold her back and moving forward with a growth personality. In the end the bus is a metaphor that it’s either she vanished or committed suicide. It is an excellent suspended amount of moment of time in about probably in 5 months. A 5 month summer.
Yes, I appreciate the fact that the story is so self-contained. I feel like not everything needs to be a series. If weren't for the ending I'd call it a "slice-of-life" story. I love the charming little world these two girls have built for themselves. Thanks for watching!
I don't really care for the comic. I will say that the voices given to the girls are palpable. It's so distinct, sort of like Holden from The Catcher in the Rye... but these girls are far more annoying and crueler than Holden tbh. I couldn't stand them. They rarely feel like authentic outsiders. They just seem like these holier than though alt girls who like to play games with people, which isn't cool, because they don't end up the butt of the joke in most cases.
I think your assessment is fair. That said, I'd argue the implication is that this is an angsty, temporary phase that the girls grow out of. The cynical meta-irony, the holier-than-thou outsider schtick, etc.---there's nothing sustainable or fulfilling about that.
Always was one of my favorite films! Also Art School Confidential
Ah, yes! Art School Confidential is so great, too! Thanks for watching. :)
Great content. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one.
Thanks so much, Rob. Yes, it's an underappreciated comic that I feel has been almost forgotten about in our times. Cheers!
