While there is nobody like Mike Waterson you guys do a great job. I teach this sometimes in my singing groups. Never heard the Helston Hal an tow, I'll check it out. Thanks
Actually that's not true. John Roberts and Tony Barrand used to sing it, and I have a couple of other recordings too. The first time I heard it was on an old Folk Legacy recording years ago. I've performed it myself for May Celebrations. There is a slight variant of the "Aunt Mary Moses" verse which I learned from Leslie Fish when I was in the Manzanita Choir: Bless Aunt Mary Moses She raised a mighty storm O It blew away the Spanish fleet Between the dusk and dawn O. This is supposed to refer to the wrecking of the Spanish Armada.
Actually am very familiar with irony since I write parody and satire, but since we were discussing the song, I decided to not engage in witty wordplay and just refer to song directly. I thought some people might actually be interested in the different musicians who have recorded or performed the song. I thought the alternative verses might interest some people, though I suspect that Leslie might have written the Spanish Armada version herself for the May Day festival.
