  • Howard the Duck is one of Marvel Comic's lesser known characters but he is loved by his fans and has a colourful history with Disney. Disney was quite concerned that Howard looked like Donald Duck. What did they do about it? Find out here on Casually Comics.

Talking of creative revenge, there's also Tony Isabella and Hanna Barbera. When the latter wanted Black Lightning for Super friends, but couldn't reach agreement with him, they ripped him off with the character Black Vulcan. Same origin and powers, different costume [Black Vulcan can be seen in the Lego Batman movie. One of the dancers at the fortress of solitude party]. So in the next Black Lightning story, Tony Isabella made the villain unscrupulous corporate mogul Barbara Hanna, who came to a nasty end.

I feel like Disney is still restricting Howard in some ways, it was around the time they took over Beverly Switzler stopped appearing in Howard the Duck comics. It's shame because if I was a writer for Marvel Comics the first thing I'd want to do would be write a comic about their son. He's unaware of his true parentage and the Duckworlder DNA dosen't kick in till his teenage years. One day he's a normal teenager then all of a sudden he's growing feathers and his feet are turning webbed.

Looking at the original design, he was just straight up Donald in terms of look. For once I can say I totally agree with Disney and even the design changes they requested were pretty reasonable, it left the character recognizable for his fan base and distinct enough for Donald. I can't believe how petty the writer was when in the end it was Marvel that didn't try to negotiate the changes.

I liked reading Howard The Duck way back when. "Before" the change. I liked the satire. There was a time when he parodied other heroes in canon (Iron Duck, for example) and his Marvel Team Up #96 with Spidey as the take on a crazed SJ nut who calls himself Status Quo, whogets mobs to riot over...fads in pop culture (!) where Howard himself is 'mistaken' for a fad and has to strip down and jump in a pond to blend in (kind of) with earth ducks.
I always thought Disney was over reaching, I never got Howard confused with Donald. The cigars kind of gave it away .But I sometimes wondered...could Marvel have 'changed' Howard to be more Mallard?

I admire your ability to utter the phrase "Giant-Size Man-Thing" without giggling.
After one of his fallings-out with Marvel, Gerber went over to Eclipse Comics and teamed up with Jack Kirby to give us Destroyer Duck, an ex-military hypermuscular blue-collar mallard from Howard's homeworld. Of course, it wasn't labelled as such, but when a mortally-injured old friend (an alt-named Howard) reappears to Destroyer out of a dimensional warp and relates a story similar to Howard's own canon (including being forced to perform sex acts with a human woman before crowds of gawkers), Destroyer hops through the warp to wreak bloody vengeance upon the megaconglomerate that tortured his buddy to death. It...wasn't subtle. But then, how often are comics ever subtle?
Kinda horrified that (almost) no one's mentioning Howard's cameos in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

This is an impressive amount of bitterness over being told that a parody/satire character should have a non-zero effort put into it's design. Along with a misplaced belief that Marvel should care as much about Howard the Duck as the people who created and write him.

Howard should be returned to his original look. I appreciate when he showed up in Generation X in the late 90s or thereabouts. He should be brought back for more mini series. Also a cartoon show should be made like these adult-skewing cartoon shows that are popular now on FX and elsewhere. Disney should not have had a cow over this duck. But the damage is done. Disney owns Howard now so he should be allowed to just be himself. People are sophisticated enough to tell the difference.

It's impossible for me to recommend early Howard The Duck comics enough. They might seem tame by today's standards, but they were pretty ground shaking at the time. The idea of adding irreverence , bawdiness, and sociopolitical humor to a "funny animal" comic was toyed with only in the underground comics prior to Howard. But this comic book was sold in all the mainstream markets at the time - newsstands, grocery store spin racks, etc. - right next to the same funny animal comics that Disney was peddling. Under the circumstances, I could sort of see Disney's argument, but it was a legal overreach nonetheless.
Anyway, having come to know Casually Comics as I have in recent months, I think this channel would really enjoy exploring the story of Howard's arch enemy "The Kidney Lady" - a deranged old woman with a Qanon-ish obsession with maintaining the purity of her kidneys, who enters into Howard's sphere time and again. Really. One of the greatest and most offbeat characters to ever appear on the grocery store spin racks.

Steve Gerber and Chip Zdarsky wrote this character well. Love his team up with Deadpool.

I love the Howard the Duck movie. I watched it way more than I should have when I was young.

When I first saw Howard the Duck in the comic stores in 19- longtimeago, I didn't think of Donald. The tone of the cover art made me think more a Cerebus the Aardvark or the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle magazines.

Imagine how much more terrifying the Disney Halloween short with Donald and his Nephews if it was Howard the Duck instead.

I LOVE the Howard the Duck movie!
But I grew up loving the Dark Crystal. I thought Critters was a cute franchise. And I rooted for Gargamel to win over the Smurfs.

I like the movie too, even though the scorpion monsters at the end of it scarred me for life as a child!

Sasha....All they have to do is add a deleted scene to the original Howard the Duck movie where a young Eric Selvig is one of the Scientists that was working on the project that brought him to earth and we have the Beginnings of the MCU all the way back then.

Its kinda interesting how the almost yellowish off white feathers and brown suit kinda work towards Howard's off color more mature image. Even though it shouldn't matter his color scheme especially since he's meant to be a satirical cartoon character or an animated mouthpiece

Fascinating. I'm not sure why I'm surprised at the micromanaging that Disney did about this I mean, down to the eye color? Dang.

I read the early Howard the Duck stories in a couple of the old Man-Thing comics - interesting stories, but he really did remind me of Donald so the conflict came as no surprise

I wonder if Howard is still not allowed to be redesigned? He showed up with his original Donald-esque design in Ultimate Spider-Man, and his MCU design looks different to both comic designs.

Howard the Duck was the first comic I collected. I remember seeing a copy for $10 at my local shop and thinking I had to get it. I was pretty young so it was big money for me so I had to save up for it. Seems kind of silly now that $10 was such a big deal but it was at the time. I was a big fan of the character though probably I was a bit clueless to the satire of the character. I just thought he was cool for his sassy attitude and duck-like appearance. I even enjoyed the movie at the time. Now it seems a bit iffy but still enjoy.

So I see on your shelf behind you your 'The WIcked + The Divine' Comic. Have you done a video on them yet? Or are you even planning on making one? I have wanted to read it but I'm kind of broke and really only want to invest if its actually interesting. Is this something you'd be willing to explore as a topic or is there even enough to discuss? Thank you for your time.

I always could tell the difference between the two Ducks personally, they were similar yes, but different enough where I knew what I was getting into

The visual joke of it being physically impossible to get those pants on or off with huge webbed feet is worth a chuckle too. Howard's humor generally operated on multiple levels, including the sight gag.
