Good info- just want to point to anyone who may not have understood clearly, that when firing the opposite muscle to stop a cramp, it is NOT a passive stretch- you need to activate the opposite muscle(s) fairly forcefully. So in the first example of the calf cramp, yes, you want to actively pull the foot/toes upwards, and it may need to be done fairly strongly. Hamstring cramp would need the quads actively tightened- so straighten you leg and tighten your quads. Medically it's called "reciprocal inhibition"; it works because your brain will not usually let both sides of a limb tighten at the same time- otherwise you would't be able to bend your arm for example (an exception is when standing up from sitting- both your quads and hamstrings will activate). It's a protective reflex that we can use to our advantage.
Man, I had cramps yesterday. I did the 50 pullup 100 bar dips challenge for time. Goal is 5 minutes. I aw happy to get done in 6:17. My lats cramped up later in the day. I had to use a strength ban to stretch my lats.
I sometimes get a cramp in the inside thigh of my right leg which unlike cramps I get elsewhere will not respond to any stretch or tightening or massage - I have to limp to the bathroom and get in a hot shower. Sometimes I have to crawl, it's so painful I can even stand up on it.
An important area you missed is fascia massage. Repetitive movements in the same direction, like serving or a golf swing can deplete hyuralonic acid causing muscle layers to drag over each other and since the fascia contains the pain nerves you get a painful cramp. The answer is fascia massage. Magnesium is involved in the release of the muscles and a magnesium oil with capsaicin also works for me as do compression socks. Red light therapy increases the yield of ATP and adding creatine to you diet also helps. Sugar is not the answer to cramps in endurance events like tennis since the muscle fibres used need fatty acids. Nitrate from beets is also important since it relaxes arteries and improves blood flow to the muscle removing lack of oxygen supply as a cause.
I get dreadful cramp to the back of my thighs, which results in heavy bruising and burst blood vessels- the bruise is typically from the back of the knee to my buttock. I am in pain so severe I've vomited. I end up on the floor, bathed in sweat, and can't move. I've tried (and continue to take) electrolyte salts, and stretching exercises. Prescribed Quinine causes unwanted side effects. I'm at my wits end.
Your workouts along with the explanations are awesome and very useful. You are a professional. When I am in search of any type of exercice, I find it here. I am grateful.
V IMPORTANT - Never point and stretch your toes away from you during a cramp of the calves. Doing so will ramp up the pain and longevity of the cramp attack significantly. Not enough people mention this very crucial piece of information
Once, at home, after cycling a good hilly 80ish miles, i got cramps in both hamstrings, at the same time. Actually fainted with the ‘pain’😮😮. Big heap, collapsed on the floor. Caused pandemonium in the house, with The Boss, wanting to call an ambulance. Luckily she didn’t. Lesson learned, I now take magnesium daily, put electrolyte tabs in my drink while on the bike, hydrate well when not, and do pilates and stretching. Works for me - no more fainting 😉😊
What do you do if the cramp goes both directions? In other words, I felt the cramp, so I flexed the muscle in the opposite direction which caused a cramp in that direction. I couldn't get any relief because no matter which way I tried to move the muscle, it would cramp in the direction I moved it. This happened on both legs to my toes, ankle area and calf muscles. I finally got some relief by getting out of bed and walking for about 10 minutes or so. Any idea what's going on with that?

My problem with cramps is usually after I'm finished with an intense tennis match. I drink tons of water, electrolyte drinks, etc before and during the match, but will still sometimes get these intense, painful leg cramps as I'm walking to the car or in the car. Fortunately I've been able to pull over when cramping, but it hurts so much in both and has lasted 45 minutes and then I'll cramp again the same way every few hours. I avoid playing a lot of tennis matches because of this. I'll see my legs pulsing and my toe will even cur in towards me. Any ideas of anything for cramps that are this bad beyond what you have in your video?
Muscle cramps can also be from muscles working too hard, either from compensation or weakness. If possible, it would be good to get checked out in person:)
Going to see if this helps hamstring issues I have. I had a cramp (felt like tear) on my right hamstring two years ago that I'm still trying to fix. When it cramped it felt like what I imagine it would feel like if someone was slicing it from the bone with a boning knife. Scared the crap out of my wife from my screaming. Fingers crossed.
Stress would activate some unreal cramps during my sleep and I'd wake screaming. That sitting stool looks fantastic for posture and you were beautiful on it 😊

Me too. They’re the worst.
I often find it’s hip flexor/inner thigh muscles over working, often from sitting a fair amount and glutes not kicking all the way in.
@@drkristieennis - what glutes? I have no butt. :D I do fence though, footwork uses hip flexors a lot.

Leg cramps while sleeping after any leg workout. Usually inner thigh/quad. I just limp, rub magnesium on it & deep breathe.
See if adding any of these help:) also, make sure your hamstrings and glutes are activating.

Every so often I get cramps in the Sartorius muscle in the inner thigh. Extremely painful and a difficult to stretch out.

That’s definitely not as common as calf and hamstring! My inner thigh tends to cramp if I don’t pay attention to my foot position.

1000 mg of sodium in LMNT? Doesn't that go against advice for blood pressure regulation?
This amount is for people who are salty sweaters (like me:) if there is medical concern, certainly check with your doctor.
