Spraypainting a Chair / Fabric Restoration

  • This is a cheaper alternative to reupholstery. In this case, I used Dupli-Color High Performance Vinyl and Fabric paint, generally used for car seats (so you know it'll withstand lots of use). Another similar product is SimplySpray.
For this particular chair, we used 4 cans of paint. This does not include the cans we will need to do a light second coat and the back of the chair (I estimate another 2-3 cans will do both).
Note: Because of the fabric of my chair, the paint made it feel a bit rougher. I was able to use a toothbrush or similarly-bristled brush though to 'soften' it up a bit. You should always test the spray on a similar piece of fabric or on a hidden area beforehand to see how it will turn out as all fabric is different. As I said, this is a CHEAPER ALTERNATIVE, so it will not be near as good as actual reupholstering.
*I am not being paid to mention the products here, they are just examples*

Looks like I'm late to the party, I just found this (March 2020). Anyway, I'm throwing in my two (four) cents worth because I think some comments here are harsher than I've seen on other DIY videos. 1. In the description, TaylorJaede answers many of the questions posted. 2. You can't possibly tell the true condition of this chair (or any piece) in a picture or video. 3. Everybody's taste is different. I hated the gold, but I respect everyone's taste. 4. As a veteran DIYer, I'm not looking for perfection in any one video, I'm looking for ideas and inspiration, which TaylorJaede did (thank you, btw). I check out multiple videos for tips and tricks that will help me create a satisfying project with minimal hassle.

I love what you did with the chair. What actually brought me here is I have a similar project with a chair I found that has a few marks of spray paint on it anyway, and I wanted to see if anyone successfully used fabric paint on furniture. I like your choice of color and will be doing the same with my project. Black will be easiest to cover the existing marks. Awesome work!

There are a lot of bossy people quick to tell others what to do with their stuff. It was a worn out chair with stains as she stated. It's her prerogative to do it. Frankly the color was ugly but then I grew up around the time everything was like that in the 70's (and bled over into the 80's) and I won't shed a tear for sure. God I think they only used like 4 colors for everything you could buy back then. I think the paint turned out pretty nice. Sometimes to get extra life out of something you have to be creative like using upholstery paint if you don't want to pay to have it reupholstered.

Randall Cheuvront I 100% understand where people are coming from, I'll admit there have been a few times I've seen people mess with something that should've been left alone and I felt the same (I never say anything to them though because it's not my place). I wonder if the comments here are because I look like a "young punk" and hence eveyone assumed I didn't think this project through. Who knows !

First, I'd like to thank everyone who defended the chair. I bet you guys hate chalk paint too and I appreciate that.
    Why I Did This Project:
    1. It was going to go to the dump unless I took it
    2. It had permanent stains and marks
    3. There were no tags or labels indicating who made it
    4. I despise the colour and it did not go with an inch of my house, and finally
    5. I plan on reupholstering it anyway

There does exist a spray on rubber, art students were on video spraying the product on a cement floor covered with a sheet which they later removed from the floor to create sort of a batman costume merely using scissors, and it was waterproof. The television show is sort of a costume contest, contestants vie for best monster costume,

If you ever find yourself doing this again spray the chair with water and use a chalk based paint mixed with water! It dyes the fabric and saves the texture. Especially if you use a sanding square in between coats !!

    • @nikkilindsey606
      @nikkilindsey606 4 года назад

Def should have used a spray bottle, it allows the paint to soak into the fibers of the fabric instead of just basically top coating it. It had to be stiff which is why it took so long to dry. I bet it was cracking and peeling within a couple weeks. A little research would have helped..

They’re hideous, much like that ugly yellow your couch used to be, it matched nothing I own and makes me sad looking at it. They’re going black no matter what. Question is, how. So far your method is the one I prefer.

It's a HOW TO video. Not a "Do you like my style?! :o I crave your opinions!!!". Shush, jealous people, sitting on your lazy butts whining & being rude & mean. Buy your own mustard puke colored furniture. Oh wait. You can't...bc hippies don't work. They make love & do illegal drugs to fry their brains so they can have distorted taste. NOT hating. Hippies are GREAT. Everyone is great. Besides those that judge. Judgers suck a sticky cactus.
I'm not a fan of black couches either but I'd rather that in my home than mustard!!! It's kinda posh, esp bc of the shape...Throw some silver glitter & white furry pillows on it & it's glam baby!!
Is the fabric still soft though???

Laura, I agree about the chair. She did a beautiful job and destroyed NOTHING. Also you are correct, this is a "How to video"....however you are wrong about hippies-many of them became educated, amazing people. You should spend some time with one. They are beautiful...YES some are weird but to each their own. I am not a hippie but was raised by two very beautiful souls and yes, they were hippies. They were different but amazing, caring, loving parents. I hope you have a great day.
