- Toyota Yaris Transmission Fluid Change - this process is same/similar to all toyota vehicles with automatic transmission. Always consult your local mechanic and your vehicles specfications before attempting anything shown in this video.
It took me about 3 quartz to reach the upper level of the full mark - Toyota Manuel mentions 2.6 quartz - please keep this in mind

Thank you so much this is literally the easiest car tutorial I've ever watched haha
It cost quite a bit at a shop because they hook it up to a pump while you are at idle running the system to try to flush out of the torque converter as well. Some shops may even take the pan off and replace the filter. I think I paid about $150 for the complete flush when I bought the Echo. Now I just do this drain and fill about every 80,000 km and things are good. I had 100,000 km on my 4runner when I did this and checked the filter. Everyone said just replace the fiter.....I cleaned it with brake cleaner and took an inspection camera to look inside. It was totally clean. It is likely a different type of filter on the Echo/Yaris. Thanks for posting the video!
It's just like an oil change. Tip: Just do the oil transmission fluid change if the color is grey or black. But if is already black check if is thick. If so, a mechanic may be necessary.
Very dark fluid indicates worn out & most likely burnt clutches & fluid. Replacing with new fluid is likely to cause slippage & force a rebuild... not recommended as the bad fluid full of clutch matter has much lower lubricity than New & is actually enabling continued service but probably not for very long.
Always recommend replacing the filter inside the pan at every ATF oil change too if you can. Gives you a chance to clean the pan of any contamination and metal build up inside too. You wouldn't change the engine oil without changing the filter there so think of it like that.
Good video to show the process. But you need to shift the transmission while running through sll the gears and then recheck the level before driving so the oil is throughout the whole box as the fluid moves through the different valves in the valvebody to shift gears. Also it needs to be at the right temperature as per the manufacturers spec as the oil level will change as it heats up.
Not required with this screen type filter. Clean it and good to go. It’s more of a strainer than a filter.drain and fill ever 60k and your good.
@@meganandchad13 I changed my brother's one and it's definitely a normal looking transmission filter. Toyota actually doesn't recommend changing the oil unless under extreme or unusual conditions but it was having a little sticky solenoids 3rd to 4th change and it's come 90% after I changed the oil & filter, and cleaned the pan & magnet.
You are a legend!!! You just saved me over 200$ USD, I bought the transmission oil 6 qts in bulk and bought the hex kit for 70$, AND I have enough leftover transmission oil for the change!!!
Super helpful thank you! Dealership was asking $850 for this and some windshield washer fluid 😂 Bay Area prices are just dumb
If you first did a full flush around 30 to 60 thousand miles, and the fluid is perfectly vivid red and absolutely clean, most say a flush is safe.
The "crowd sourced consensus" is if the fluid looks funky or the car is past 70 to 100 thousand miles, NEVER do a full flush.
After that, it's safer to do multiple drain and fills spaced out over 10 to 20 thousand miles in between. Give the new and old fluid time to mix.
Most of the fluid stays in the trans compared to what comes out on a drain and fill.
NO ONE recommends running the engine, and certainly NOT shifting, during the drain.
Check the owner's manual to see if the trans needs shifted through all the gears after the initial very cautious fill.
I don’t understand why there are 17 thumbs down on this very good and informative movie?
Thank you!
17 transmission shop owners.
Every other backyard mechanic thinks they know it all, just ask them. Most likely nitpicking BS
Thumbs up guys if yall viewed it im sure this helped. It helped me. Thanks again.

That’s it?! Thank you!!! 🙏🏼 question though. What’s all this I hear about a filter change for transmission fluid as well? And what about flushing? I’ve heard mixed feelings. Some say never. Some say yes.
I enjoyed this very much. Thank you!
Thank you :)
Omg I can’t believe this costs over 300 at the dealer lol thanks for the vid this is saving me a ton of money
What costs more at the dealership, though still too high, is what this one is missing. The filter change. You need to change the filter too.
he said " already changed the filter "
i was wondering too
changing oil without the filter is just a waste .
Not if the trans fluid is still in nice shape. Filter can assumed to be loaded up if fluid is darker or car has high miles but if it's got nice translucent red color, it won't need changing.
Thank you for the Torque Spec. The Toyota dealership here in California wants $250.00 to change out the transmission fluid on my 2008 Toyota Yaris.
$200 at the most would be fair. They gotta get paid right? Most places Ive seen get 180 or 150. Sometimes you can bring your own fluid
I sincerely hope you told them to go jump in the pacific ocean!! thieves!!!
dude thanks this is sooooo easy
you got it!
Wrench Groove I had to add almost 3 full quarts!!
@@Toyeboy89 Same here! I think the Toyota manual not fully accurate. I will add this note to the description.
Wrench Groove I had to add more actually once it was warned up I ended up adding 3.5 quarts. Maybe some spilled so could've been 3.4.
Helps when you put the actual model year / generation because they differ.
US Model - Automatic Trans - 2007 Toyota Yaris
@@wrenchgroove9387 what about the filter ?? Toyota told me i dont touch that. Canada here, my car comes from Japan. 2011 Yaris RS
@@CRM537 I"m unsure about your particular model.. Is it automatic or manual? Technically Toyota says filter is "lifetime" but I would change it every 100K miles. And I would do fluid chnages every 50K miles.
Nice vid. Really helpful for my yaris. 👌👍
Thx. Those Yaris videos are helpful!
do you put in the new fluid using the deep stick hole?
Yes

@@wrenchgroove9387 Thank you friend, it's excellent!. I changed the 2005 Toyota Vitz trans oil yesterday...I always just drain the oil out - when cool (ambient temp), measure what came out accurately, and put the new oil amount back in. Helps when you know where the fill plug is - Thank you :-)
@@brettymike very good! I like that idea of measuring the amount that came out to put back the same amount

Thank you very much for this!
Dont wear your nice digital watch when you do mechanical work on your car... lol.
haha I'll remember that next time
exactly my thought when I saw the watch. transmission fluid not good for watches
So you're only changing 3 of the 10 quarts it holds, as oil in the torque converter is not being drained?
After draining, I remove the pan and change the filter too. If you’re going to change fluid, why not go to the next level and do it right? It takes half-hour or so longer. Torque the pan bolts in criss-cross order to 43 “inch” pounds.
I had already done trans filter change thats why I specifically titled the video as such. This video was just a trans fluid change (no filter mentioned). Some people rather change the fluid often, and filter every once in awhile. To each his own.
@@wrenchgroove9387 the dealer told me to not change the filter as it is a strainer. I just do the oil.. thats it.
@@CRM537have you had any transmission problems since you've changed it yourself? I've thought about changing the filter myself.
No filter? You have to remove pan and clean magnets - unsat
Thanks heaps I reckon I can do that now after watching this video

How much transmission fluid do you need for a change?
thank you
can you please make video on how to change or flush coolant on Yaris please!
Will do! I should have this in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for the suggestion
Do not flush your transmission fluid. A fluid change is all that is needed
Just wanted to mention how wrong that capacity amount in the owners manual is... I've done this three times and I always need 3 qts and 15oz's and it's NOT overfilled, it reaches the 'upper hot' mark on the dipstick perfectly with the trans hot, engine running and on level surface. Just sayin.
Hi Devonne, Thanks for your comment. Yea, I've had 3.2 quarts and 3 quarts during drain and fill. and Almost 4 quarts during trans filter change. Manual does say 2.6 quarts but like you said it seems wrong. Hope people see the video description and your comment!
same here, i used 3 qts in my 2012 yaris hb and the fluid level is exactly in the upper hot mark
@@wrenchgroove9387 I wanted to update, more had to be added since my comment above, I'm now at 3qts and 31oz's to get to the top line, "hot full" line after a long highway run. When I drained it this time, somehow I got way more out than previous times, parked on same spot level garage floor. The only thing different was it was parked overnight and undriven before I pulled the plug, maybe all that sitting made more fluid come out than had I just driven it then removed the plug. I don't know, it's a weird one. But just shy of 4 quarts later it's finally full :)
Same issue here I had to add more is 3.25 qts
Very clear n short

I am a newbie to Toyota automatics and run a 2004 Yaris Verso -- ideal for people with disabilities like I have now in old age. I am a retired doctor.
WHY are MPV's not made any more? That is a general question to readers of your superb site.
When VW forced Skoda to dump the Yeti after just 4 years in production we lost a great car in Europe but the Yaris Verso was superior in many ways and maybe should be revived as a hybrid.
The market is crammed with SUVs and choice of vehicle types has narrowed beyond reason.
Does anyone remember 'estate cars' either side of the pond? Some American, British and French ones were masterpieces of mechanical design.
you refill trans through the dipstick hole.
Manufacturer recommended fluid is Type IV not WS
My US model Yaris uses WS. It says on the owners manual and transmission stick. That why I mentioned in the video and description to check your own manual.
@@wrenchgroove9387 yes you are right, i did some research and in US yaris engine is 1.5 with U340e transmission that use WS and 1.3 engine yaris have U441e transmission that use type 4

Vitz transmission oil change and your opinion Asad Pakistan
On the 2007 yaris automatic, when HOT parked with vehicle off its in the middle of the hot/cold. Running HOT in park its in between both cold notches, running HOT in neutral it's at the lower cold notch. My question which HOT condition should I check and add to ???
How many quarts are in the torque converter? I’ve read that the trani can take up to 10 qrts.
good question, I know it's in my owners manual but can't recall. I wanna say around 7 qts on smaller car like Yaris. So drain and fill you only get like 3 qts.
Hello. Can you confirm no magnet on the plug? Theres a slot for the magnet but I just removed the plug and it doesnt have one
i have the same engine used on the video
So basicly it is like engine oil change, drain refile? Is this same with 2017 hatcback 5dr?
where is the bolt on top of gearbox????? you did not show that. I need to find that bolt. unuseful
Do you know where the speed sensor is located on transmission?
I stripped out that bolt and can't find the specs on it anywhere, you wouldn't happen to know that bolt size would you?
Hi I have a toyota yaris 2015 at 32000 miles and toyota gave advisory for Hybrid gear oil. Am i correct to say the oil is the same in a hybrid automatic compared to petrol automatic. Same method to your video ? Also do i really need to change it as you stated 50000 miles? Thanks for the answer
Hi Jayash, good questions. Best advice I can give you is check the oil cap (usually it has the specific oil weight needed for your car. If it doesn't, then checking your car's manual or searching google with your model and year to make sure. In the US, we don't have the hybrid Yaris so I have never worked on that particular model. As for the automatic transmission fluid needing to be changed every 50,000 - that's just my personal opinion if you want to keep the transmission running smooth for long time. If you don't plan on keeping the car for long time then it wouldn't be as necessary.
That crush washer, is that a M14 or an M12?
There is s filler inside the pan, that must be changed too.
do manual transmission Yaris's also have a dipstick for the transmission fluid?
no, just drain from lower drain hole and refill through top refill hole until it comes out.
what about the filter? shouldnt you also change the filter?
This time I only did drain and fill. but you can definitely do trans filter to accompany fluid change. My practice is change fluid (drain and fill) every 50K and filter/fluid every 100K. So far my car has 160,000 miles and when I reach 200K I'll change the filter again. I'll make sure film it next time.
hey guys, can someone tell which of the Toyota use the same driveshaft/axle as the 2003 yaris?
I'm assuming your pouring back the fluid into the dipstick hole?
that's right
Is that Toyota fluid Full Synthetic?
Is that Vulfpeck at the beginning?
WHERE DID YOU PUT THE FUNNEL IN TO FILL THE TRANSMISSION????????????????????????????????????
Through the transmission dipstick port
What about sealed engines like Toyota Vitz 2008 model that don’t have a transmission fluid dipstick?
My car is only engaging gears 1 and 2.
Sorry, I wish I knew more about your model. But I don't. I'm sure there's a fill and drain hole on the transmission. Usually on sealed transmissions, you would remove the fill plug and see if fluid come out. If Fluid doesn't come out then it's low on fluid and filling it till fluid drips out of the fill hole can fix your trnasmission issue. Just a thought.
@@wrenchgroove9387 it is a Toyota Vitz 2008 new shape model, 1,300cc 2sz engine with a push to start ignition.
@@st92170did u figure it out
Do i need change filter as well ??
Our Yaris is going into neutral and all things point to transmission fluid, can I just top it up or does it need draining?
tough one.. Is your yaris automatic transmission?
@@wrenchgroove9387 thanks for the reply, yes it's automatic
@@Sterling20073 Well I would first check the level of your transmission fluid. Check the tip stick (see the video). If you're low on fluid then you have a leak somewhere. Leak may be coming from the transmission pan or drain plug. If you're not low, then I would change the fluid it may help. Follow the procedure in the video.
But keep in mind it may be whole different problem it's shifting into neutral
Do I have to flush or is it fine to just drain and add new transmission oil?
Look for Rabo's comment at the first level on 19 July 2023.
This vid misses way too much information.
Hey man had the ATF drain and filled by mechanic, next day after driving for abit and running through the gears, checked the dipstick with engine running on park, fluid level is about 1cm over hot mark.
Should I be worried and drain some fluid? 2014 Yaris.
If the car is shifting good and not overheating it should be fine .
SOF is right. A tad over the hot mark isn't something to worry about. As long as you don't have harsh shifts or overheating you're fine.
Does the Yaris take 3 or 4 quarts? I asked Toyota parts department and they said it should be 4 quarts?
It should be the amount that drained out.
Even if you measure that, still be very fearful of overfilling.
Check level b4, Measure what came out, replace same & check level again.
Where did you refill the gearbox from ?
For Automatic Transmission like mine, you fill up through the ATF dipstick

i have 2008 yaris, i went to the toyota dealer to get transmission fluid to do the work myst and they kept telling me that this car uses world standard fluid and its unrepeatable plus it takes special machine to get it done, they wanted $350 to get it done. that is why i wanted to know what year is your yaris. thank you for the reply.
@@adamsonright2120 Your driver's manual will tell you what type of fluid you have to have. All you need is a socket wrench with a 10mm hex bit. IMO, sounds like they were trying to gouge you for $350
@@adamsonright2120 The "machine" they mention is most likely to do a "flush". What this video shows is a simple drain and refill - you're not actually removing all the transmission fluid with this method, just that which is in the transmission pan/reservoir.
Hi how can i change tramission fluid on vitz 2006
Its same Yaris American standard
If I’m not correct, shouldn’t your fucking car be running before you check the transmission fluid kind of weird to me
after changing the transmission fluid the gear has become hard to shift. Is that normal. Thanks
Doesn't sound normal. It should feel slightly smoother. Please check your fluid level again it might be low. If it's not that then your transmission be on the way out.
Also, depending on your Yaris model they use different type of fluid. My Yaris USA model uses TYpe W fluid but some other country models may use a different fluid
Did you use the right transmission fluid for your model year?
Mine took 3 qts and is no showing full level on hot, I changed it when the car was cold, I took more than 3 qts out so I don’t know if I need a little bit more of oil, is an 1.5 auto transmission
are you checking your oil level while engine is running ?
Taimur Baig yes I checked it on hot, cold, on different days and very low, so that means the transmission fluid takes more than 3 qts on my Yaris the old one was more than 3 anyways
@@JG-ss9xy i just did this service on my car and yes you are rite it took more like 3.25 L (3 full bottles and ¼ of 4th bottle)
Taimur Baig exactly that’s the correct amount I’m gonna add that 1/4 tomorrow 👍👍 unfortunately they didn’t have more at the dealer
@@JG-ss9xy so I just checked my fluid level and its too high now lol while engine was running and in normal operating temperature... Can you please check your fluid level after quick drive and while engine running... I feel like 2.5L was actually the rite amount
No filter changed?
Nope. This is just a fluid change. I like to do 50K fluid change and every 100K trans filter change. So far up to 200K miles.
Is this for automatic transmission only ?
yes for Auto trans. Unfortunately, Manual trans are a different procedure.

No slipping???🤔🤔🤔
No slipping. My yaris didn't have slippage before, this was just for maintenance. If your yaris is slipping changing the fluid will probably not help even with an additive.
did you have to lift the car or was it not necessary?
Yes, I would recommend to lift your car (at least driver side). It's easier to access.
How much odometer are required before changing ATF.?? thanks
Toyota recommends every 100,000 miles or 160,000 KM. But I would suggest every 50,000 or 60,000 miles (or 80,000 KM).

@@alvinvlogs-equipmenteam3970 I used about 3 quarts (2.9 liters) of ATF but heard other people use a little less or more. I would fill 2.5 quarts then check the transmission dipstick.
So he just drained the oil pan and didn't get the oil inside the actual transmissions. You will need to put the drain plug back on, start the engine and shift through the gears, turn off the car and drain the pan again. Don't leave the engine running. It shouldn't take more than 20 seconds
You could do what you mentioned as additional measure.. I was just showing a fluid change and not with filter or "flush". That's why titled it as so.. But you're right it doesn't get all the fluid. I believe this quick service every 40-50K miles should be enough to prolong the trans life. Depending on the persons mechanical ability or desire to maintain you could take it further and have more peace of mind. Thank you for watching and commenting.
I think I mentioned it (maybe not) - filter change at 100K (max) would be recommended. Again some might think 50-60K it should be changed. its up tot he individual.
