This review is not fair as it does not show laptops that are equivalent to the one you're presenting. You disregard this laptop and recommend other brands that you have yet to try out in the 4080 variant. This laptop is actually a bit more powerful than the Strix G18, and that laptop runs hot as hell. The only thing that runs hot on this laptop is the CPU, which is fine considering that it is designed to run at 100c, and it is like that so the GPU can run cooler compared to the 80c on both GPU and CPU on the G18. I am just saying that if you're going to say there is better in terms of competition, try the competition before making that statement as you don't know for sure, and can't verify that your statement is true. Not a hate comment, just a suggestion for your videos in the future, but good points for trashing Alienware's software.
Also not to mention this model is cheaper to other brands like lenovo 7
I have had this laptop for 2weeks and have been happy with it.
Unfortunately I can't get my hands on every laptop to review but I don't have to to know that they have better weight and software.
I do have the legion 7 though which is better in terms of weight, battery, arguably screen, power brick, thermals, and was the same price but with 32gb of 5600mhz ram instead of 16gb 4800mhz ram.
The Alienware does have a slight edge in raw performance numbers *if you go into the bios and overclock the CPU.
But like I said if you have the Alienware and like it that's perfectly fine :). I just can't recommend it all things considered
i owned a strix scar 3 laptop before with an intel chip with NVidia graphics, quality is not as great as alienware and asus is more budget friendly which you get what you pay for which suprised me. Both may have quality issues sometimes, but both brands have some good deals compared to others. The big deal breaker for me is asus charging port after 3 years it started to crap out, and i've owned 2 asus laptops before and its common with asus laptops where you'll have to take out the motherboard and re-solder a new piece which sucks. One thing dell has over asus and is leagues ahead is customer support and warranty.
Highly suggest going AMD for the processor at minimum due to its efficacy compared to intel where intel tends to over heat with it being still a 10 nanometer, they are going downhill from here sooner or later. After downloading all drivers my all AMD m17 alienware laptop, its been buttery smooth with 4-8 hours of battery life, my asus would barely get 2. Also to mention my RAM and clockspeeds are nearly double of what i had with Asus and it barely gets past 70c temps during the same tasks and games i've played.
Hey does Alienware are known to also have a lot of backlight bleeding probs & ips glow?
To each their own I guess. I’ve owned my m16 for a week now and I’m very happy with it. The only complaint I’ll agree with is the command center, it’s trash. As for the weight it’s around the same as its competitors. The main reason I bought this laptop is for the thermals. I have my cpu set at 110w which I can hardly tell a difference with for what I’m using it for (rdr2, snowrunner, bo3, valheim, kena). The warmest I’ve seen this laptop get is 80 on the cpu and 65 on the gpu. I love the display too, very colorful, no ghosting or stuttering and I’m pretty sure the nits is higher than they advertise. Just leaving this comment for anyone who was considering the m16. I think it is well worth the money.
I plan to buy m16, is there a big difference between i7 and i9? I'm going to buy 4070
@@henryhan-tc9zd Are you exteme video editing? No: Go i7!
Just ordered my M16 with 4090 haven’t seen any reviews yet hopefully the thermal ok
@@surferlam7139 Hey Surfer how are you liking your m16 ?
@@silverpro8356 I really like the laptop it run everything really well. The only things I don’t like is the fan noise and the speakers.
i was honestly feeling the X16 and m18 but what stopped me from purchasing was the 300nit brightness, no oled or mini led, and easily the build quality. I wish the aluminum didn’t seem so shallow or plasticy
I saw the 6000mhz ram on the x16 and liked that, and the price. But 300 nits is rough at $3,000 us.
x16 has breathtaking build quality apparently.
@@furnitureandbedding776 it does however for the price i think it needs a bigger trackpad, better screen (thinner bezels for a bigger screen/better resolution), and the alien logo power button back.
Don't hesitate on the X16. I have it with 4090 and I9 and 32GB Ram. Thing is a beast and premium in every way. Yes software is janky but not the end of the world. Low nits on screen scared me but this screen is just fine and really beautiful.
@@mentaltmc I bought the X16 and Blade 16 with the mini-Led screen at the same time. X16 is superior in every way except for the screen. I agree the screen is OK but you can't really compete with the 1000 nit Mini-Led screen in the blade.
An important thing g to me is the build quality. The last laptop I bought looked very beautiful brand new but it used too much thin plastic parts. Over the years a lot has broken including the hinge for the screen. I'm looking for something built a little more tough but obviously for gaming and with a 4080 and 16" screen.
The only thing I could argue is they lock you out of an actual bios you just get like an operators menu. I had a toshiba like that and it didn't really matter it just takes away that "i own this thing" feel given you cannot change stuff if you wanted to.
I think they updated the bios and you can now get into everything
Having owned multiple AW systems (and yes, I know how to build PC's, degree in Computer Science, and built around nine successively before I tired of it), they are not bad systems. They are generally well constructed, and the benefits of Dell are that the systems are component tested in conjunction with batteries of thousands of stress tests for stability that you simply cannot do just picking even the best components off the shelf and doing at home. That being said, they generally run hot, but this is by no means exclusive to AW, most game laptops tend to run on the warm side. Also, quality varies by generation and as most know Dell refuses to do quality thermal paste applications. OTOH, the saving grace is that the systems are either in the middle of the pack or higher, and Dell will literally come to you within usually 72 hours for an onsite repair. Often you might need a bit of tuning to adjust for thermals and performance but that's true for many systems as well. It gets tiresome the meme hating on the Internet about AW, then they give a free pass to systems like Razer and Asus, Lenovo, and so on so frequently glossing over their issues. Seeing no-name RUclipsrs attempting to get hits and followers by using them by riding on the meme gets really old.
I heard that they are using liquid metal with the RTX 4080 and 4090, do you think these thermal pastes won't be enough? In my country the 4080 or 90 options are not available, only the 70 which does not have liquid metal, in addition to this thermal problem the gap between a 70 and an 80 is very large, so I am considering traveling abroad to cut some taxes and obtain this exactly M16 in US, would you have a tip on another? It has to be a laptop for portability for me 😞.
@@Caduzao. It’s not the best, but it will be fine. You can under volt (usually) a bit which helps, and usually what I see is a rise of maybe 5 degrees C after four years for Dell on standard paste. Even then, you won’t have any issue.
yeah i can completely agree with you , this man has no plan from computers. I also have the alienware m16 and i am pretty satisfied with it . This man has no technical understanding. the cooling system is one of the best. AW lets the CPU run 100 degree to get the maximum performance. The most Yt dont understand that this isnt a problem since those intel chips are made for that and the laptop stays even cool on the areas where you would normaly touch
@@user-jx5xq8hu9e People worry about hitting sustained temps on a CPU or GPU of say 80c have no clue. You might shorten the life from ten years to 9.5 worst case.
@@fractalelf7760 do oyu also have an AW Laptop ?
Is this model better or ho omen 17 4080 i7 13700hx?
Hey @grumblez! Thanks for your videos! Any chance you will be the MiniLED version of an Acer Predator Helios 16 or 18?
Probably not, I'll probably do the normal Helios 300
Well that is your opinion I own one and it was well worth the money and works fantastic. As far as temps who cares tired of all these haters. Buy it and use it to just play games and stop worrying about all the crap that reviewers say they hate Dell and Alienware I have had them for years and they work great.
Nice one. Thanks.😍
Damm I was really considering the m16! The thermals were much worse than I thought, like hitting 100dC at 130w CPU? Other laptops with the 13900hx are reaching much lower temps at similar wattages. Btw u mentioned the m16 has 6h of battery life. What was the work load?
IT was 6 hours of battery life streaming youtube, but only when Command Center was uninstalled. With Command Center installed I could only ever get 2 hours.
The thermals are pretty good compared to other laptops. They optimize the GPU cooling more than the CPU as the CPU usually can handle more heat.
? What laptop reaching 130w with MUCH LOWER temperatures you say :D
130w cpu consistently is like top notch right now on gaming laptop, even the GT77 Titan and Scar 18 which are the two most powerful gaming laptops right can only do so much just a little higher because they are both 17inch and 18inch laptop which are bigger than the M16 and you said there are other laptops reaching MUCH LOWER TEMP drawing the same wattage? Tell me what laptop :D?
@@thaibinh6585 ruclips.net/video/DtWQfwX7Vaw/видео.html check around 5 minute mark. legion pro 7 15 degrees cooler at ~130 watts
I don't know bro, my M16 never runs hotter than 75C I have the same performance something seems odd
You're likely being throttled or maybe your turbo boost is disabled
@@TraceguyRune no ihave the same model and it definitely doesnt run that hot. The cooling is decent .
I can only buy the Legion Pro 7i 4080 in canada for now. I am thinking that maybe I should wait for the Rog Strix G16 4080 instead.
Can you tell me which one you would pick?
I haven't used a rog strix Legion 7 really good though
i would pick the acer triton over the Legion Pro 7 this year. They downgraded the Legion by a lot, i would buy a Legion when they stop playing
M16 i7 13th 13700hx vs ryzen 7 7745hx which is better
13700Hx is more powerful 7745 more efficient
I thought they were updating command center according to ces 2023
They did and it is better but still a bit Janky and sketchy
I JUST GOT THIS MODEL FOR JUST UNDER $2k. Three differences: Core i7; Geforce RTX 4070; QHD165Hz. Did I get ripped off?
It's $1799 for the highest possible Radeon R9 7845HX, rtx4080, 240hz panel and 32gb. So probably you purchased too soon? Or maybe this is a sale right now?
@@Foxtechconsultants before taxes and 2 year service plan It was around $1600-$1700.
@@TheMrdkb that's a great deal. You're good! I am trying to decide between the m18 with a 7900m for $2199 or an m16 with the 4080 for $1799 😬
@@Foxtechconsultants ok awesome. So far it runs all games great, but to be honest my Alienware Aurora R17 with a 1070 GPU also runs all my games. One thing I noticed with the M16: Red Dead Redemption seems laggy. Maybe the GPU is not being used?
Best Buy has the 4080 on sale for just over
I really really thank you for caring about the noise levels. Thats a professional review. Most people dont care about their laptops sounding like jet engines so they wont test the noise levels. I care a lot about noise level since im looking for a workstation to do my audio engineering work and noise levels is my top priority. Now i definitely know that laptop is not for me.
TBH, is there any laptop with a 4090 that is quiet?
did u buy it from best buy? there’s an open box for 2100$. need to know if someone returned it for the right reasons.
i’m planning on getting it
This exact build is on dells website for 2100 new
Found one on open box $1680 in "Excellent" condition, we'll see how it goes when I show up tomorrow
The G15 has a dense heavy build with garbage internals
I just got my m16 in exactly ur spec. Before I tell u what i made differently than u, i have to give u 2 points where u are absolute right:
-AWCC is embarassing. this is just bad software.
- it's a shame that "premium" laptops with such a price come with very bad settings for the hardware. this is not ok.
but you could have done so much things to get a much better xp if you would have monitored the hardware just a bit and knew how to read it (what i expect from a review chanel):
-before u do anything with this laptop: make a new clean installation of windows without dell/AW bloatware
-just install AWCC, thats all u need
-deactivate all Windows bloatware and processes u don't need
-go to bios and undervolt ur cpu (makes a huge difference, because cpu doesn't get to 100°C anymore -> no thermo throtteling -> much more overall performance)
-dont forget to set the @800mhz settings right
with this done u get a powerhosue of a laptop with no thermal problems. And i can't understand ur problem with the display. On paper it hast 300nids, in real it has 350nids and i never use my GAMING LAPTOP to sit in my garden in the sun for gaming. Tablets exist for this reason.
Alienware desktops are crap for sure and much overpriced for such bad engeniered computers. But the laptops are fine if you know how to optimize hardware and how to solve easy problems with it (again: what i expect from a tech review chanel. and again: it's not ok that alienware ships laptop with such stupid settings to their paying customers)
How does it compare to the Legion Pro?
Legion Pro 2023 is terrible compared with the previous year's model.
We all need truthful reviews not fan boy paid shill reviews.
Thanks
I feel like Alienware isn't the paid shill band. Most RUclipsrs trash Alienware. Lenovo and Asus are the brands handing out their laptops like candy to RUclipsrs.
I heard it has 300 nits display. That’s a real turn-off.
No number pad
No number pad off the bat.
I was watching alot of mixed revieww about the M16 and decided to go to the store and play with one. Gotta say right off the bat the screen is great color wise but it wasnt bright at all. This was on the best buy showroom floor and the brightness compared to other laptops was pretty bad. Also this thing is hefty. The x16 was much more sleek and lighter. same shitty screen however but definitely the better buy.
I feel like Asus or MSI are the "hey look at me I'm a gamer laptop look" esp the Asus with their Anime Matrix displays. AW laptops have there own look. I find them breathtakingly gorgeous despite the bulk. I don't travel with gaming laptops though. I just want to game on a quiet and cool laptop and max out RTS games in peace.
What's wrong with asus? If u don't like anime matrix than just...not buy this spec lol
Video is about m16 not msi or asus in comparison
Quiet also lol, 65 dbls is queit? U watrched video till the end?
I can see how smart you are by looking at u expecting that laptop will fit on ur kitchen scale.
bro rich now can buy any laptop
I am an XPS user. So this laptop didnt look that bad to me. Although I would wait for r17 cause I know they coming.
why would this laptop look bad to you if you weren't an XPS user? I'm not asking that in a condescending way just unsure what you mean. Is it because they are both Dell?
Bro, im super glad the commamd center doesnt touch the cpu, the reason i have to sell my asus laptops is because the g14's custom drivers dont allow for radeon software and on top of that armoury crate causes all sorts of issues, it almost bricked a 5,000$ laptop when i tried to fix an issue on it. Dont buy asus ever
Huh, never had any problems with armoury crate.
@@grumblez yea well my pc moved the boot sequence to an external hard drive, then when i tried reinstalling os armoury crate prevented me from doing anything for more than 30 seconds before communicating to the bios and then causing the computer to hang. Any software that tweaks bios is risky and armoury crate just so happened to almost completely lock me out of my system
@@grumblez Asus are terrible now apparently.
brightness is well above 340, I think its not that bad, also laptop is well tuned, out performed similarly speced Asus strix G16, and I dont think its a bad latop at all, you just have to go for 4090, its a better deal than 4080
Ok and tell me why paying 1000+ more for 4090 just to get 10 % incercase in performance...
@@eravizuala forgive them, they werent very lucid that day
@@eravizuala There are 4090's in HP models for $2850. Definitely some sacrafices being made there at that price, but when 6000mhz ram can give you the same performance increase at far less than $1000 it's to be considered too ie x16.
@@eravizualaexactly
Price is the winner here. I don't see other 4080s for the same price.
Scar 18, legion pro 5 both very similar price.
Legion 7 w/a 4090 could have had for like 2500 if you haggle with the Lenovo reps. Quote is only good for a few days though and you gotta keep at it awhile.
I'm pretty happy with my M16 Ryzen 9 RTX 4080. Upgraded the RAM to 64GB and added another M.2 drive. I've had issues with Alienware in the past, but not like Asus. I will never buy another Asus product.
how much battery life do you get if you disable the dgpu
Screen is dim
I hate evry 13th gen laptops because most of them have less battery life than previous gen, 1/3rd of AMDs offering. 10+++nm really lacks efficiency. Intel should have moved to TSMC 5nm and made hybrid chips. as their ARC gpu is on TSMC.
Who buys gaming laptops for battery life though?
I would say, yeah, it is. Alienware and razer have terrible QC, along with asus. Nowadays, its gigabyte, MSI, lenovo and acer really kicking things up a notch.
Even in terms of raw performance, alienware does not push the boundries. Aorus, back in 2017, released a 17' laptop with dual gtx 1070's and an OC'd i7. This laptop was the size of regular 17' laptops with just 1 gpu. Aorus again, released a 200w rtx 2080s laptop. Then again, lenovo released a 16' laptop with a 180w rtx 3080ti.
Where's alienware's answer to these things? They don't release SLI laptops in pascal. Neither do they push performance with absurd TDP's.
Who ever bought 1080 sli laptop does still have the horse power to do 3d rendering on gpu till this day .
@@vmafarah9473 Indeed. And the $3600 dual 1070 sli aorus x9 pro was even priced reasonably and could still do 3d rendering well, to this day. that's just insane.
All that, in a laptop that was the size of a normal 17' gaming laptop from back in 2017
Acer better than ASUS???? Are you serious...??? 😂😂 Even in Quantum Computing, i don't think so... I had Acer & ASUS laptops, ASUS is by far BETTER made!!!
@@fishkall9000 I don't remember acer blocking vents on their 2020 and 2021 nitro 5, unlike asus doing so on their tuf a15. I also don't remember acer's rog strix amd advantage having bad thermals due to blocked vents and using crap cooling design and airflow.

I have a AW from 2019, I did undervolt, and still reach 97C some games.... 4 years working like this...AW are building different.
there is not problem with the intel chips becoming that hot
People complaining about the thermals need to really get it through your heads this is NOT a desktop, not as spacious as a PC Case. All the gear is in a space of mere centimeters. To expect "good" thermals, wait for 2030 or 2035 when liquid cooling or space-age thermal paste is invented/made available to lower temps to "good" numbers.
100c is going to be the NORMAL for a few more years. all we have is Liquid Metal and "vapor chambers" as the "highest" form of Thermal Conductivity available in laptops, so either get used to it or stick to Desktop.
What magic drugs are you smoking when you can literally SEE that the cpu can chew on 130 WATTS of power and remain functional, do you know the heat dissipation required for all that wattage!? why are you peeps talking like you are educated on this, you probably heard from other dolts about how "100c is HOT for a CPU", it all DEPENDS on what we are a talking about. The kind of technology to bring that 100W+ down to 60-70c at full load does not yet exist especially in this form factor.
Lets be realistic people. I predict 100c-105c becoming the norm for the next few years till something more efficient at dissipating all that wattage's heat is invented and/or made CHEAP for commercial use, I'm sure the military and space programs have it already but the R&D is in the millions-billions. I dont want to buy a $20,000 laptop just to have some "good" temps.

this feedback is meaningless
