At almost 67 years of age, I have accumulated so much stuff--some of it collections, things I just HAD to have. But at this point the joy of possession has long since past and all these things have become a burden. I have a strange sense of needing to protect these things from destruction, as most of it is from days long past. So what I have been doing is looking for people--anybody, who would treasure these items as much as I used to and I make it a gift. It's a double win for me. And God loves a cheerful giver!

I know! Many of us spend our whole lives collecting very meaningful things! I like your strategy, though I am sure it is hard to find people who will treasure them as much as you (if you are as sentimental about memories as I am :)). God does love a cheerful and generous giver. I will try to remember what you have shared here, and do the same!

That’s a great idea! I’m planning on living in a much smaller space and I can’t use all the furniture I have.
I’ve promised a lot of it to my granddaughter so some will have to go into storage.

Faultroy: I understand your struggle. Perhaps this might help - it's a strategy I came up with years ago and I have used it many times. I ask myself (out loud) the following question: "If I knew that tomorrow was my last day on earth, is this what I would be fussing or worrying about today?" The truthful answer has always been "NO". For me, it puts things very much in perspective. And always remember, as you divest yourself of the materials and tools you accumullated during of a lifetime of study, the knowledge and skills are yours to take with you wherever you go, to share with others, to perhaps inspire someone - to touch a life. Best wishes as you tackle the challenge. May life's richest blessings always be yours.

I am so pleased to see your comment. I am 67 also, and I feel exactly as you do. I try to explain how I feel burdened, even almost suffocated by the years of accumulated stuff. People, even my hubby, look at me like I’m crazy. Thank you for validating those of us who are at this stage in our lives. Sheri

Looking for that special someone who might want your stuff is folly. Learn EBay, donate to Salvation Army, yard sale it or put it out on the curb for anyone to take. "Collectables" most often have little value and can be found in thrift stores. Just get rid of it! Trust me, it only hurts for a second and the next day you forgot you ever owned the thing which has been owning you.

Thank you so much for your encouragement, Diane! I will have to think about your question. The one thing I would say in this moment is this. I am not a senior yet, but my grandmother kept a large collection of precious flow blue china in a cabinet on display her whole life. She finally was sent to a nursing home and her collection was divided up among her children. I try to remind my Mother, and myself, there is nothing gained by only looking at something so beautiful and never celebrating it's beauty and usefulness. Even if a piece or two was tragically dropped and broken, as a Senior, why not enjoy celebrating the memories and stories behind what you have. Use that precious china! I have made a commitment to myself to try to only keep what is both useful and meaningful. (So I limit my trips to the store to accumulate more, and try to really use what I have and savor the memories behind each well-made antique I have inherited.) If I think of other "Senior Specific" ways of prepsteading, I will make sure to post them! God bless you today!!!

The freezer! Use all those leftover meals that you put in the freezer and forgot about. Use them before they get freezer burn and have to be thrown out.
Paperwork, go through your filing system and toss out all the papers you won’t need. Directions for appliances you no longer have, receipts of the same. Write down bills paid on one piece of paper and shred or burn the rest.
Books, sell or donate to the library books you can put on an e-reader or ones you bought and no longer want to read. This is a HUGE way to gain space in your home if you’re a bookie like me!
I’m new to your channel and appreciate your videos and especially this one that I need to do so badly. It’s refreshing to have you quote scripture at the end. Thank you.

Get rid of the thousands of kitchen gadgets we accumulate, including all those small appliances. If one will do multiple things, keep it instead of several others to do those same things. I.e. A toaster oven instead of a toaster, a larger oven, and maybe a bread machine. Go back to stirring things by hand instead of using an appliance that takes up more space than a simple spoon. Use a knife to chop things up rather than a food processor, a grater, etc. I had a kitchen full of gadgets and small appliances to do single tasks, that took up so much of my limited storage that it drove me out of my mind. I've gone back to doing those tasks by hand, and found it not only freed up space, but the cleanup is easier as well. Also, if I don't use or wear an item for a year, it's gone. Other than some winter clothing kept just for those years when we get a much colder and snowier than normal season, if I don't wear an item over the course of a year, I get rid of it, or turn it into something else that IS useful in more immediate times. That plethora of blouses has turned into rags and quilts and children's clothing, extra pants made into patches, bags, and other useful items. Coats and jackets seem to multiply like rabbits in my house, so those I donate or give away. I have one pair of comfortable shoes that are designated yard shoes, another similar pair I wear for running errands in town, and a couple of dress shoes that go with most of my outfits. One old reliable pair of cold weather boots, one pair for rough hiking, and that's it. Dressier clothing is strictly mix and match items I can make many outfits from using only a few basic items, and they are in simple elegant styles that will stand the test of time. The rest of the time on the farm I live in jeans and tshirts, year round pretty much! A couple of decent pairs of jeans, about a dozen tshirts, and that's all I need for taking care of the house and garden. If I get a little grubby one day, but know I'll be doing it again the next, I may wear the same clothes! Why get two sets of clothing filthy if I can just get one set that way? Less laundry, less items to store, equals much more simplicity in my life.

Many people make resolutions for the new year. I don't make resolutions, I set goals. My goal for this year is to weed, sort, minimize, and get more organized.
I don't think people realize just how significant the impact that negative emotions have on the human body. Many ailments are linked to negative emotions.
My community has a Spring Cleanup Week every spring. It is the one week during which residents can put anything out by their trash bin and it will be taken away by the City for FREE. They usually charge for anything that does not fit inside the bin, but that week everything is picked up for free. We also have a Pay It Forward facebook group in which citizens can give things away or even put a request on the group page for an item they are needing. These have been great opportunities for people to minimize.

How I wish I had heeded this advice years ago. I'm currently getting rid of things in order to fill my cellar with shelves. In the end my pantry will be beautifully organized, but this would have been so much easier if I'd just done it all along. Tonight before I saw this video I cleaned out my makeup and my daughter's smaller clothes. I threw out the old makeup and I will be taking my daughter's older clothes over to my friend for her little girl. I have been pulling out my older clothes and I will be donating them to a local charity. I will be donating the step 2 climber and the kid's picnic table and crabby sandbox as my daughter no longer uses them. I am erecting a storage shed in their place which will house many boxes of very old files. This will free up space for more shelves to keep things tidy in my basement . It will give me space to plant a third apple tree and another peach tree (I so love peaches) and it will allow me the ability to add some landscaping gravel and Muskoka chairs and have a little fire pit (propane as its safer in the city). You are right that I will feel so much better once the weight of clutter is gone and knowing that I will be helping others with the things I don't need. God has been very good to me and although I have never been ungenerous there are ladies who will actually fit my old size 2 and 4 jeans (I sure don't and that's okay) and there are clothes that I wore when I was much younger that are just no longer age appropriate that some young woman would love to have. Your videos are a wonderful way for you to be of service don't ever doubt that.

This is such good advice I have a problem with food.If there is food in my freezer that I don't want to eat for some reason I feel guilty throwing it away.I have to remind my self that it is not going to get better with time I need to eat it or get rid of it if it is not going to be eaten it is just wasting space. It is making it harder to find and keep organized the good food and is giving a false illusion of having a lot of edible food. The money that was waisted on it is already gone .

I've always lived "close to the bone" due to living in a high cost of living state coupled with low pay scale- regardless of the responsible jobs I've always held.
I was fortunate when I could finally afford to live on my own, sans roommates, at 38 years of age! Then to have my basic needs met, well! That was Heaven!
As for my wants - anything $100 or more I would put on layaway if such a plan was offered. Even if I could afford the item outright, laying it away gave me chance to calm down about it, think about whether or not the item would be a significant addition to my life, and, if not - cancel the layaway and get my money back ( minus a modest restocking fee) and move on.
If I decided to purchase the item, it was paid for when I walked out the door with it - no credit card payments!
I still have quality items I bought back in the 80s! And they still serve me well to this day.
My wardrobe has always been minimalist as I'm more into gear than fancy clothes. Shoes - rarely more than one or two pairs. In the mid 70s I bought a pair of Adidas running shoes which served as my ONLY pair of shoes, worn daily for over 4 years!
I don't say any of this to come across as self-righteous, but merely to show how by living a ( forced) minimalist life-style, I've managed to avoid many of the pitfalls so many others have fallen prey to.
I have made many mistakes and wrong turns in my life so I'm in no position to lecture others. The LORD GOD has kept me alive and safe dispite my worst worst efforts!

Problem with the shoes - and other things nowadays - is the quality of things has gotten so low. Even when you "invest in better quality" goods, all too often they don't last nearly as long as they used to. A case in point is work boots.

I did not stay for this video's bible verse and was anxious to get to the next one. But something made me quickly return for I forgot about your bible verse.. I have been struggling for months over being wrongly accused of something by someone in authority. I could defend myself and prove the falsehood but I would have to tarnish one women reputation and involve a simple nice lady who warned me of this persons attack. Your choice in scripture (1 Peter 2 : 19 ) gave me my answer and I will gladly endure and not retaliate and have peace knowing that God knows my innocence and that is all that matters. I agree with this 100%. I am so glad I stumbled upon minimalism shortly before starting my journey as a prepper. After 30 years, 3 kids, several couch surfers, you accumulate stuff left behind and stuff you bought that made sense at the time, but today no so much. Unless you actively look at everything in your house, one item at a time, you'll probably hang on to it. I didn't take on the full minimalist doctrine and get rid of items that were still useful, I just repositioned stuff. Stuff I use on a daily/weekly basis are immediately around where I usually sit, office, kitchen, bedroom, etc. when I use them. All less frequently used items are stored, well organized, on shelves in my basement, with my preps. I feel less claustrophobic in my living space and it also promotes frequently running up and down stairs for exercise, especially during pandemic self isolation.

There is a way to de-clutter your life. Someone once told; take 10 items a day and get rid of them. It doesn't matter what they are or how you dispose of them (sell, gift, or toss.) 10 things isn't such a hard choice at first and it's amazing just how much you find you really don't want much less need.

Twelve years ago our family of three moved from a large, 3000 sf house to a 50' boat. We gave much away, had garage sale and kept some things in storage because we knew that we would not be living on a boat forever. After three years of living on the boat, we moved to a 1600 sf house. In downsizing to a boat, I learned how to live with much less stuff - and it was all stuff. Now, whenever I get too much stuff around me, it makes me very anxious and I must declutter again. Living without all the stuff is very freeing and energizing. Love your videos!

I am going through all our cupboards during this pandemic to make room for the necessary preparedness we need to have now & going forward. I enjoy your videos they address realistic goals that make sense. Thank you

My BIGGEST bugaboo BY FAR is old papers, old bills, etc. My wife hoarded that stuff for YEARS and I still have many boxes of it here. And the task of sorting through all that is daunting, to say the least.

      @PREPSTEADERS  6 лет назад +4

You have no idea how much I can understand that! My family is guilty of the same thing...a million past check stubs, bills and files. But bit by bit, keep whittling away at it. It feels so victorious to be free from that!

Hate to say this, but after 1 year or more and you haven't touched it just chuck it into a shredder bin.
I found out the hard way by compulsively sorting every box, then chucking. Haven't missed a bit of it turns out, it was a groundless fear.
Memoirs are best from the heart vs clutter.

Just record everything in a small planner or notebook for every year. For anything you want to remember the look of but don't want to keep, take a picture of it. You can keep prints of those pictures in the notebooks. You'll free up a lot of space that way and have everything organized.
      Edit: typo

I have become something of a Hoarder and I have to start somewhere. My Mama used to say that if you haven't put your Hands on something you have at least once every 30 Days to get rid of it. I never understood that when I was young. She lived through the Depression and saw a lot of Wars and hard times in her Life. I know those Days are coming again in a different fashion and I have been looking hard at what I have and can it provide Food, Shelter or Safety if SHTF. The answer more often than not is no so it's got to go.
Great Video. Great Message. I have been struggling financially for some time but I am better off than a lot of Folk. I will be donating to People I know that need these things I have. Thank You for your wisdon Lady.

Binge watching all these videos. My children are asleep and I am taking the time to gather up some of their toys and stash them away in a box. In a year or two they will be so excited to rediscover them (at no extra cost to you!) and meanwhile they can enjoy the fewer pieces they have and also easier cleanup is a win win.

I had, or so I thought, pared down and decluttered. Then I decided to follow a bit of organizing videos and was shocked. It took me 3 months and included my work shed. Every week I loaded the car with stuff to donate. I would not have guessed (for many things) that I had 2 laundry baskets worth of clothing to donate! I thought I would need more organizing containers, but actually donated some that I had.
Also, as someone who has lost both parents in the recent past, I do not want to leave the “encumbering houseful” as was left to me. It was so overwhelming during a time when emotions are sensitive. I chose some things and offered them to my children. What they or I did not want was donated. If we aren’t going to use it, someone else can enjoy it. I enjoy my space. After decluttering, I could “see” better the projects I wanted/needed to complete and had more space and freedom to do so.
Your video, as always, is inspiring.
    Thank you!

My beautiful bride is an academic writer, home based. She has an aversion to clutter and does NOT want to come out of the office to face a big mess. She states that it affects her motivation to work. Projects that worked for us: 1. Proper labelling. we know what is in the box or bin and can find a needed item or tool in an instant. 2. Inventory, we know exactly what we need to replace each trip out, no wasted time thinking about it in a supermarket, hardware store or department store.. 3. Build-up sheets, as part of keeping an inventory, we use a system the same as convenience stores used before computers took over inventory control. We have a number of pieces the should be in stock for each item. During an inventory, we ALWAYS build back up our stocks to the proper number we should have according to the build-up sheets. 4. Budget, yes, all of the above helps keep us within a steady, preplanned budget.

After moving 9 times in less than 10 years when younger... and in my first marriage, I am an avid "de-junker" ! Oh how I hated to pack and re-pack and move useless, and once wanted but not longer used items. Today, though re-married and we have lived here for over 25 years.... I still go through my closets, drawers, pantry and all over my house at least 2 times EACH year, and throw away everything I don't use or haven't used in 2 years. When my husband says he needs some new socks... I remind him to be willing to throw away just as many old ones which have holes in them, or do not stay up,( so he avoids wearing them), etc.! This eliminates a huge drawer full of socks he has no intention of wearing again. I have also tried to discipline myself to put only so many hangers in my closet, and when I purchase new items, I try really hard to take just as many old things to good will, that I rarely wear or do not wear any longer. -- If not for prepping, I always think "What would my grown kids have to go through after I die... that will horrify them!!" LOL Whatever you do not want them or others to sort through "someday" ... ditch it now! What I find is that my house is SO much easier to clean, and I have much more space. I am a "space" person anyway, so this feels great to me. One final thought.... my 22 year old bachelor son told me last year, "I watched an episode of "Hoarders" and it made me go through and clean my house from top to bottom!" ... which is what I told him a few years ago! LOL

I agree. The idea of someone else going through my "stuff" is horrifying! I had to sort through my parents' belongings after they passed away and although there was nothing shocking, it was the sheer amount of documents, mementos, old watches, viable clothing to donate, others to throw away, kitchen stuff I was able to keep, etc. It is a huge, emotional burden to go through a loved one's belongings. I am trying to get through my stuff, it's amazing how much we accumulate over the years.

I am down on all that stuff. I have given as gifts those things certain people have admired. I have donated many items to my church's annual yard sale. My problem is books... I love my books! This is such a good message for so many people! Me especially! I have "saved" so many, many things. But I have to be honest, I don't think I can get rid of my "Treasures" of my Mothers! Just don't believe I can. Lots of other things, yes! And I do have those plastic bowls! Just to let others know, when I moved into my new home, I had so much junk!! I cried at the thought of throwing it away!
I went to a doctor and confessed this. After talking to me for a bit and asking questions, he told me that I wasn't crazy! That I had been brought up so poor, that I actually felt that I had a USE for all those things! That I should start by eliminating all but 6 of things. IT WORKED for me! It's not always easy. But you can do it!

When my mother passed away I learned a valuable lesson. Get rid of things your kids won't want; the memories to keep all fit in one rubbermaid tub. It makes your passing harder for them. She had a curio cabinet I bought her when I was 16 that has sat in my spare room 4 years because she loved it for 30 years. It's not my style or my daughter's so tomorrow it's going to the church resale store.

I currently live in a 32ft travel trailer, so it's not as difficult to adjust to as if I was moving from a 2000 sq ft house. I've just come to realize that I don't "need" as much to be happy as I thought previously.
