I grew up in the Boston area during much of the big dig. It was a nightmare getting around the city back then because of all the construction sites everywhere. But the final result was like night and day. Going into Boston was a bumper-to-bumper ordeal almost any time of day, but now it’s pretty swift getting in and out. And the green spaces that opened up are quite nice. It was well worth the money spent imo

You need to invest in both to make a real dent. Driving in Boston is expensive to start with parking is expensive and the toll's to get in and out of the city is expensive as well. Some people will still drive no matter what. Anyways the biggest impact of the big dig was not the traffic rather the complete transformation of the area. Green Beautiful and very walkable.
The big dig was a boondoggle, rife with corruption, and the gridlock is worse than ever. Also, because of some shortcuts and shady construction materials, there’re still people who worked on that project, refusing to go through those leaky tunnels.
I rode Shanghai - Beijing line in 2018. Train travelled around 350 Km/h. The total journey took less than 5 hours. In comparison, in early 1970's, such a trip took around 22 hours on "Super Express" train at that time, and over 24 hours for regular express.
Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway moved 210 million passengers in 2019, doubled its design capacity. That's why China is working on longer coastal high-speed railway that is parallel to the Beijing-Shanghai one.

Back in december 2007, I flew out of Kansai airport to Beijing ,its a fantastic airport so clean , and a lovely envoirment inside it. The work that went into building it as above one mega build.

I remember the issues with traffic in Boston and the Big Deal, although took a long time to complete, was well worth it. Traffic is still sort of bad, but it is a lot better than what it used to be. Also, it would be interesting to see how much it cost for the similar project like this in Dallas, Texas with the 75/635 interchange and the "dig" of 635 for the express lanes.

I traveled from Beijing to Shanghai and flew to kansai airport from Shanghai. Very beautiful Trip. Although its interesting driving through empty Chinese Land and then occasionally theres just some highrise building in no mans Land. The approach to kansai is super beautiful

I'd love to travel and visit places, but the government got me firmly by the tail, literally. I am sure the projects that were built today are impressive. Today, people are better educated and smarter and machines are so much more advanced from designing to construction.
kinda sad when you think about it, on one hand you have Brexit where you get stuck at the border and then you have a great tunnel but still there is no free of traveling anymore with such a great tunnel build for what.

The Chinese High Speed rail network is now at 38,000km, at a cost of $20million per km, a total cost of $760billion. This is almost the same amount that the US spends on defense budget for 1 year only. It is defintiely clear what the priorities are in both countries. Even thought the entire network runs at a slight loss, it has enabled 2nd tier and 3rd tier cities in western China to develop at an astonishing pace.
America is not China. In China, most people didn't have cars until recently and like in Europe are used to public transportation. In America, cars have been the number one option and will remain the number one option. In China, a large portion of airspace is owned by the military and so even though their Airline traffic is growing it's a lot more difficult to operate in Chinese airspace vs American. China did high-speed rail out of necessity while in America it would be auxiliary. There just isn't the demand or the will for expensive auxiliary when we already have a huge aviation sector that serves the need for long-distance travel. BTW Amtrack the US passenger rail service regular needs bailout to survive. There just is not the demand for passenger rail in America. Freight rail on the other hand in the US does very very well. The best in the world.
Also, the network doesn't run at a slight loss it runs at a massive loss. Never believe the Chinese numbers. Also being a capitalist society, we don't want the government to take on the huge burden of building something that will lose money each year. Very few high-speed rail lines around the world turn a profit most are money loosers.
I am afraid I have to agree to “Suffan Tariq”, it is most likely that the system in fact runs at a massive loss, and not just a slight one. It was a prestige-project, the vibe was, “look, all our trains are like your best trains, because what is extraordinary for you, is normal for us.” Only this is not the case. Always be careful with the PRC! Even during the great famine during the “Great Leap Forward”, the regime made people (both in China and abroad) believe everything was going great.

When I see bridges with fancy designs I wonder if the fancy design came first or if the engineers thought up the best way to do it first. I suspect that fancy designs win and the engineers are stuck trying to make things work.
Floating Airport concept may be adopted in India for their proposed Airport adjacent to Navi Mumbai. The reason is the Proposed Airport site is in close vicinity of the river and back water. Thus during rainy season there are chances of flooding the area causing interruption of Airport functionality.
Talking in terms of “big dig” as a New Yorker, New York needs a tunnel or a bridge that connects Queens to New Jersey completely bypassing Manhattan because today commuters have to use Hudson crossings for which they have go through Manhattan (which is a complete nightmare) in order go to New Jersey, the same for New Jersey commuters to go to anywhere in NYC.

I've been on the Shanghai-Nanjing section of the Beijing-Shanghai HSR several times on my way to Wuhan, which includes the longest viaduct in the world. Unfortunately this was before the CR400 brought speeds of 350kph on to that line.

In Australia many projects have happened at roughly the same scale but I reckon The snowy mountains scheme takes the too spot, also have to say Sydney Harbour bridge And western Sydney airport (currently under construction) are other close contenders

Fun fact: Hawaii's H-3 Freeway is actually more expensive than the Beijing-Shanghai Railway project. While the Beijing-Shanghai Railway 821 miles project was around $44 million per mile, the H-3 freeway (aka John A. Projects are much more expensive in developed countries vs underdeveloped ones. There are Environmental concerns and purchasing land rights etc. Any project where you can just force the people to move out of the way and the environment be damned is gonna be cheap comparitively.

As an airline pilot I've landed and took off from Osaka airport multiple times and it's still fascinating to be there.
Channel Tunnel has proved to be a success, the trade and usefulness of the channel tunnel has earned the UK and France billions more then was spent.
My uncle worked on the construction but missed the last ride back to the entrance one night, he said had to walk for 30 mins to get out!
The Channel Tunnel is not just a transit solution; it is an enduring symbol of the friendship and history between France and the United Kingdom.

The Channel tunnel certainly has improved journeys into Europe from UK!

It is defintiely clear what the priorities are in both countries.
Even thought the entire network runs at a slight loss, it has enabled 2nd tier and 3rd tier cities in western China to develop at an astonishing pace.
America is not China. In China, most people didn't have cars until recently and like in Europe are used to public transportation. In America, cars have been the number one option and will remain the number one option. In China, a large portion of airspace is owned by the military and so even though their Airline traffic is growing it's a lot more difficult to operate in Chinese airspace vs American. China did high-speed rail out of necessity while in America it would be auxiliary. There just isn't the demand or the will for expensive auxiliary when we already have a huge aviation sector that serves the need for long-distance travel. BTW Amtrack the US passenger rail service regular needs bailout to survive. There just is not the demand for passenger rail in America. Freight rail on the other hand in the US does very very well. The best in the world.
Also, the network doesn't run at a slight loss it runs at a massive loss. Never believe the Chinese numbers. Also being a capitalist society, we don't want the government to take on the huge burden of building something that will lose money each year. Very few high-speed rail lines around the world turn a profit most are money loosers.

I am afraid I have to agree to “Suffan Tariq”, it is most likely that the system in fact runs at a massive loss, and not just a slight one. It was a prestige-project, the vibe was, “look, all our trains are like your best trains, because what is extraordinary for you, is normal for us.” Only this is not the case. Always be careful with the PRC! Even during the great famine during the “Great Leap Forward”, the regime made people (both in China and abroad) believe everything was going great.

When I see bridges with fancy designs I wonder if the fancy design came first or if the engineers thought up the best way to do it first. I suspect that fancy designs win and the engineers are stuck trying to make things work.

Floating Airport concept may be adopted in India for their proposed Airport adjacent to Navi Mumbai. The reason is the Proposed Airport site is in close vicinity of the river and back water. Thus during rainy season there are chances of flooding the area causing interruption of Airport functionality.

Talking in terms of “big dig” as a New Yorker, New York needs a tunnel or a bridge that connects Queens to New Jersey completely bypassing Manhattan because today commuters have to use Hudson crossings for which they have go through Manhattan (which is a complete nightmare) in order go to New Jersey, the same for New Jersey commuters to go to anywhere in NYC.

I've been on the Shanghai-Nanjing section of the Beijing-Shanghai HSR several times on my way to Wuhan, which includes the longest viaduct in the world. Unfortunately this was before the CR400 brought speeds of 350kph on to that line.

Projects are much more expensive in developed countries vs underdeveloped ones. There are Environmental concerns and purchasing land rights etc. Any project where you can just force the people to move out of the way and the environment be damned is gonna be cheap comparitively.
