It is an eternal source of embarrassment to me that I can't get into that one. Even after reading the book I struggle to sink my teeth into Cronenberg's interpretation.
Yeah you have to have read a few books from Burroughs to start to grasp the Naked Lunch film imo. I also watched the film and read the book thinking it would help but it's not really a straight adaptation rather a telling of Burroughs' life featuring elements from a variety of his books. I still don't fully understand it, but now I watch the film knowing "oh, that came from this book"..."oh they're doing that book". So it helped deepen my appreciation for the movie as a unique way of exploring a portion of the authors life. From my best recollection, the only thing connecting Naked Lunch movie to the book is the title and that centipede.
1. The Fly 2. Dead Ringers 3. Videodrome 4. Spider 5. Eastern Promises 6. The Brood 7. A History of Violence 8. Naked Lunch 9. Crash 10. M. Butterfly 11. eXistenZ 12. A Dangerous Method 13. The Dead Zone 14. Maps to the Stars 15. Scanners 16. Fast Company 17. Crimes of the Future (2022) 18. Rabid 19. Shivers 20. Cosmopolis 21. Stereo 22. This is an eye opener for me to discover all David Cronenberg's movies I have seen one of his movies and that's A History of Violence and it was awesome!
This is an awesome list, James!! Very happy to see Dead Ringers on here. I watched that film a couple years ago. Out of all of Cronenberg's movies I've seen so far, that film broke me. It's so emotional and bleak. Yet, the story is fascinating. I love it! Please make more top 10 lists. This was very cool!
Saw Scanners when I was eight years old. Also my first look at Michael Ironside. Was hooked after that. Gonna need to check out these other lesser known student film's you mentioned. Deadzone is one of the best King adaptation's.
Very interesting list, James. I must rewatched those early films, "Shivers" and "Rabid", watched them when I was a kid. And that film, "Stereo", sounds good. I love most of his films, the atmosphere, the complexity of his characters, the visual treatment and of course, and complete agree with you, Howard Shore, another wonderful master, the soundtrack of Cronemberg's universe. A visionary. An absolute master of cinema. Flesh bless Cronemberg! Long live the new flesh! Here my list: 1 - Videodrome 2 - The Brood 3 - Exystenz 4 - Dead Ringers 5 - Naked Lunch 6 - The Dead Zone 7 - The Fly 8 - Scanners 9 - Crash 10 - Eastern Promises
Long live the new flesh to you as well Mario! I just saw 'Stereo' for the first time and I was blown away by how well it predicts so much of Cronenberg's late career. Thanks for listening to my rant!
Great list but I’d definitely include Naked Lunch in my top 10 for the inventive way that Cronenberg adapted the novel by showing its creation. It’s a surreal depiction of Burroughs writing it in Tangiers “International Zone” (“Interzone”) during the ‘50s, with characters inspired by people who were around him at the time, most memorably Paul and Jane Bowles (as Tom and Joan Frost). Knowing that history enhances the enjoyment. Also, the cast, art direction and score featuring Ornette Coleman are amazing.
Great video, James, you do the subject justice, your enthusiasm comes through, and if anyone is not a Croneberg fan before seeing this, the will be afterward.
GREAT list James so well done. The Dead Zone was so beautiful and sad. One of Christopher Walken’s best I was just out of college when I saw scanners and I remember both laughing and going ‘eeww’ at the exploding head. Did you catch his nice little cameo forwards the end of To Die For? A top notch dark comedy.
Geekin' with James Hancock it was a pleasure. I can find no fault with that one. Perfect SK adaptation. He is one of the most underrated directors of all time.
You did a fine job compiling all these informations. The edition of the video and your analysis are just like they should be. Didn't see these 20min pass. Good job, hail CRON!
Incredibly thorough commentary. I love Cronenberg and you just put words and an expert point of view to exactly why. While I’ve only experienced his work emotionally and aesthetically and appreciate its uniqueness, your well made reasoning is dead on.
1. Videodrome - most relevant 2. The fly - most entertaining 3. Crash - best screenplay/direction 4. Dead ringers- best story 5. Naked lunch- most wtf Hon mentions A history of violence, Eastern promises, rabid, scanners Not seem but can't wait Crimes of the future, cosmopolis, maps to the stars, existence, shivers, the brood, dead zone, spider
That's an excellent suggestion and a massive challenge. He's one of my all time favorite filmmakers, but I still have so many of his films left to see.
When my friends and I first saw Videodrome in the theater when it came out, it really blew us away. Have the DVD, of course, a poster, a press kit, the soundtrack, the novelization (actually written by Dennis Etchison) based on an early script, so you get some different scenes, such as the TV rising out of the bathtub, which they just weren't able to do. Cinefantastique had an excellent detailed cover story on it. Oh, and I have a "Civic TV" logo t-shirt. One time a guy in a grocery store recognized the reference, and I said, "Long live the new flesh!" Those practical effects still hold up pretty well, and have that quality you generally lose with CG. Always enjoy your reviews, James! ^_^
What a great ranking dude. Very well put together/educational video. Love Cronenberg, really became one of my favorites. Not sure what my ranking would be. I think I would put The Dead Zone at the number one slot.
Excellent video brother, getting started on my Cronenberg-fest tonight with The Brood as I he's a gem that I knew about but didn't fully appreciate until I saw this video, great stuff and thanks!
I Loved CRASH. Fiendishly erotic. I was fascinated by the Intensity of all the characters. No grief, no jealousy. no sorrow. No limiting, debilitating emotions. Just a savage, immaculate desire to connect.
I rewatched Naked Lunch yesterday for the first time in decades. I remember liking it when I was younger, but this time found it impenetrable as you put it. It’s rare that my opinion of a movie goes in reverse.
Have you read some other books from William S Burroughs other than Naked Lunch like Exterminator and Junky? After I caught up with most of the authors back catalogue was when the Cronenberg film version began to make more sense. It's a mix of Burroughs' life and various books he's written. Still freaking weird though.
I read 'Junky' but have not had a chance to read 'Exterminator'. I've listened to a few interviews about Cronenberg's approach to Burroughs, but for some reason the movie is always just out of my reach.
@@geekinwithJamesHancock Yeah I've grown to love it now and the more I think about it it's quite demanding of it's audience. It's like Cronenberg expects people to have read up on Burroughs' life and books from the get go for the film to make any sort of sense. Felt like I had to earn my appreciation.
I am probably in the minority here, but if I had a top 10 for Cronenberg I would have Map To The Stars in there somewhere. It is a guilty pleasure of mine. Great top 10 James. Thanks for all your great reviews and knowledge.
When the video rental store phenomenon started, Cronenberg was King. Scanners looked so grotesque. And I saw Videodrome multiple times before I understood its meaning. When I became a teen, I hanged around in the video rental store (without renting) a lot. They had a couple of tv screens and the video dudes went for it with exploitation films. It was great fun. Later on, I remember finding Shivers & Rabid (as one two sided DVD) in one of those (cheap and forgotten) baskets. Or The Brood and (the original) Evil Dead. Spending those couple of bucks really made my day... ;) Videodrome should be number one, but otherwise it's a solid top 10. Well done, James!
One thing that was pointed out to me about Crash the Spader/Arquette wound licking scene; they did not get it on properly afterwards, he actually used the wound as a vagina for.....you know.
Great video dude! I went on a binge recently rewatching Cronenberg flicks. Rabid, Dead Ringers and The Dead Zone are my personal favorites, but I enjoy them all.
Great list, have a lot of Cronenberg movies to catch up on. Of the ones I have seen, Eastern Promises was the best. But then again, I have a special love for crime and mob movies.
Always loved Cronenberg, but haven't watched him in a while. Thanks to this video I will be doing a marathon next month. Great content in this video btw
napoleon wilson I only saw that once and was quite impressed. Read the Books Twins I am pretty sure it was based on. Jeremy Irons killed it in that one
Fun list. Thank you. Who can remember where they were and who they were with the first time they saw Videodrome? I bet it's a lot of people. I have still never seen Eastern Promises. That's happening soon. I've seen all the others, from Shivers on.
Great job on (almost) everything Cronnenberg. What about M.Butterfly and Spider ? I would love to hear your thought on those underrated movies. Happy Halloween.
I loved the performances in 'Spider', especially Miranda Richardson's, but the film is so unrelentingly bleak and grim that I have a hard time getting excited to revisit it the way I do with the others. I've seen M Butterfly once which I enjoyed but it was a little inert and subdued for my tastes. I like my Cronenberg movies to be a little more outrageous.
My first Cronenberg experience was the trailer for Scanners. It was simply just the whole scene ending the exploding head. Huge cheer from the audience. We saw it as soon as it came out. I saw quite a few others then stopped for a few decades. I then saw History of Violence which was excellent, and Eastern Promises which is a masterpiece. It would be nice in these videos to discuss all his films rather than an arbitrary 10.
In fact, one thing you said about Cronenberg "crash" applies to a some of Cronenberg movies, and what I personally don't like is that they don't really end, they just stop. I didn't know how exactly to explain it, but now it became clear to me after you said it. They dont end, they just stop. And that kind of makes them not quite understand what's going on in the end. This is a strange effect. I think that in some cases it can be used as a personal author handwriting , but in other cases it can be a sign of lack of specificity like leaves you in the middle of nowhere.
One connection between Dead Ringers and Eastern Promises, apart from Cronenberg is Jeremy Irons is in Dead Ringers and his wife Sinead Cusack is in Eastern Promises. Am watching both now so just made the connection. Think we might have to arm wrestle over this top 10 list James. :)
Love the list, Existenz is top 10 for me, Eastern Promises would be 5th or 6th, and Crash would be 1 or 2. I am a bit younger though, so that may be the difference.
Yes I read the books in the early 90s but a good dose of LSD made every scene in this seem so awesome 👏 I gotta be honest that was enough to make sure I never dropped LSD again🦠
Wait....I had 0 idea till this moment that a history of violence was made by cronenberg. Wow. Idk how I missed that. I remember seeing it when I was like 15 or something but I don't think I had seen or known about him or his movies at that time yet so that's probably why.
You should have tried to justify the experience by explaining how many useful tips about motherhood Samantha Eggar was sharing in her performance, lol.
The Brood is the Cronenberg film that has had the most impact on me, both personally and on a general horror-movie level. Low-budget but very effective film, in several ways. Videodrome is heady, prescient filmmaking. Dead Ringers is excellent, though I need to revisit it as it's been two decades since last viewing. Frankly, Scanners is NOT a very good movie, period. ESPECIALLY for Cronenberg. The usual cool ideas and neat practical fx are there, but boy does it get technically sloppy and badly acted.
I never watch movies for entertainment. They are doorways to other universes. Cronenberg is one of those I call "prophets with a camera". Dead for the videodrome! long life for the new flesh!
I've seen all of David Cronenberg's films, too. Naked Lunch is my personal favorite.
It is an eternal source of embarrassment to me that I can't get into that one. Even after reading the book I struggle to sink my teeth into Cronenberg's interpretation.
@@geekinwithJamesHancock I don't get it either. I just enjoy the journey through that world.

Totally agree. I've watched 'Dead Ringers' repeatedly over the last 20 years and it never ceases to blow my mind.
Great list but I’d definitely include Naked Lunch in my top 10 for the inventive way that Cronenberg adapted the novel by showing its creation. absolutely. that movie is in a league of its own.
Absolutely brilliant stuff James. Look forward to the next in these series. Cronenberg is a master.
Much obliged Mr. Rivera! He's definitely one of my favorite living filmmakers.

great top 10
"Even dying is an act of eroticism"

My 1st introduction to David Cronenberg was The Fly.
Then followed The Dead Zone etc..
funny how different peoples perspectives on directors films can be. I hate Crash but i absolutely love Naked Lunch
You just said “Nekid Lunch” dying💀
The Fly is my favorite but i admit i haven't seen them all.
What about night breed and the Brood .
Dead Zone is such a great rewatachable movie.
The Brood....went to see this with my then pregnant with twin wife don't think she ever forgave me. Jamie watch out for the Bug Powder!

.....okay, im totally embarrassed. #10 & #9 are two of my favorites and i didnt even know they were DC's

long life for the new flesh!
movies and fiction are different? (get your words straight, bud)
