I loved the last scene. I had chills from the moment his eatware chair powered down until he ate the plastic and realized Dotrice was right and he had been fighting the natural evolution of his own body and that he really was the future of humanity. I get chills thinking about it now, especially the close up of his face crying with relief and joy. It was beautiful.

I never knew that Cronenberg wrote this screenplay in between Crash and Existenz, but that makes SO much sense.
The theme of the ambiguous intersection of sex and trauma is obviously picking up where Crash left off, and other ideas that showed up later in Existenz, are introduced here, such as the confluence of natural biology and artificial technology.
It's amazing how Cronenberg's themes and artistic preoccupations remain so relevant, even years after their original conception or execution.
I think he must have a uniquely potent intuitive understanding of certain obscure yet salient features of the modern psyche. Cronenberg knows things about us that we don't even know about ourselves.
And that's probably the most unsettling thought I've had so far this year.

The most annoying thing about internet reviews is the focuse on the gore aspect of the movie. "It was wasssss so goryyyyyy, omggggg". Who cares, what about every other element of the movie ? Direction, photography, storytelling, music, etc. This review sounds like the only well tought out analysis on RUclips, I was so tired of "it wassss so grossssssssss"

I also found the film fascinating. And it also reminded me of his past films: The Fly, Crash, Videodrome. I love the bleak world he created, it reminded me a bit like the world in the film 'Children of Men'. I am interested in posthuman, neohuman, eveloution & the environment so I was digging Cronenberg's take on the future of humanity. I personally loved the ending and makes you think what will happen next for that certain character and how the world will change from that revelation. My gripe was also the dialogue and at times sounded garbled. It could be from the actor's speaking English with their thick accents or the theaters sound system. I checked out Dead Ringers after and oh boy that is a great flick. Jeremy Irons was fantastic.

@@ツツツツツツツツツツThat's not really his goal usually, but I would say if Spielberg wanted to do that, he probably could actually.
There's the classic face melting from Raiders of the Lost Ark, the heart pulling from Temple of Doom. War of the Worlds has some great creepy designs, particularly during the farmhouse sequence. The "blood" veins growing all over the place was great (also the b**thole suction thing). Minority Report edges toward some of that stuff too. Just off the top of my head.
I don't think it'd be too difficult for him to extrapolate that sort of stuff into R-rated territory. I wish he'd go back to making somewhat darker movies, he was good at it.

My thoughts on "Crimes" is more of a deep-dive into the metaphorical meanings within Cronenberg's on-the-nose, satirical (albeit horrific) and sometimes humorous view of modern-day technology (ex: eating chair, sleeping bed, autopsy bed), exhibitionism and voyeurism (ex: Saul, Caprice, Timlin, two women with drills), pop culture (ex: Klinik/Ear Man, others), celebrity status (Saul and Caprice), and ultimately the "plastic" society that we have become (ex: plastic eaters, non-plastic eaters, and those "evolving" into eating plastic). There are also the "policing agencies" (Cope, Wippet, Timlin) that try to regulate and/or terminate humanities permanent decline into a meaningless existence of seeking out ever-greater, "shocking" sensualities (ex: government's attempts to regulate social media and the moral decline of society).
The story clearly identifies "plastic" as the synthetic, cheap, easily consumed and digested content in social media (I think of "Barbie Girl" by Aqua, Madonna's "Material Girl"). Each of the main characters is participating in the so-called "art" in some way with a brief glimpse of a "normal person" who dies from eating "plastic".
The boy Brecken, from the outset, has already "evolved" into a full plastic eater. The mother, representing parents of young "social media artists" today, smothers him. This represents the consequences of parents allowing their children to consume and produce cheap, easy to consume exhibitionism eventually leading them to be killed by it (ex: kids being killed by their stalkers, older men being fans of young girls) as if the parent was the actual murderer.
Through the entire story, the main character Saul resists "evolving" into a plastic eater (ex: "tumor-like organs" that grow inside him = the cancers of society) using alien-looking tech just to eat and sleep (Ex: cpap, hospital surgical devices, feeding tubes, mechanised beds etc). Finally, after just giving in to "evolving" into a plastic eater does he find complete contentment and peace. However, never does he realize that his "painless" exhibitionism is the very cause of his morphing into a plastic eater; he's now desensitised to it all.
Along the way, we also meet two woman voyeurists who drill holes into people's heads representing the mindless, intellegence draining people of RUclips Channels and pornography; they create content that displays to everyone their so-called "inner beauty" but is secretely "horrific" for us to watch, and we can't turn our eyes away (ex: Adrienne, Ear Man, zipper device, etc.). In addition, Ear Man (Klinik) demonstrates how even the hippocritical Producer of his "Art" (ex: the music and entertainment industry) can be the very one who exploits the financial successes but joins the "popular" view of hating it (ex: anonymous likes, dislikes, etc.).
There are many more metaphorical references throughout the story and Cronenberg uses the genre as a warning of the future "horrors" of becoming "Plastic Eaters". Cronenberg asks us If we are disgusted by what we are watching and thus why are we not disgusted by what we "consume" in today's media? He suggests that if we are not disgusted by what we're watching, we're already a plastic eater. Indeed, ultimately society will become senseless, meaningless, painless, completely devoid of the characteristics that make us human if we don't stop eating plastic both metaphorically (ex: social media, empty entertainment, exhibitionism, voyeurism, pop culture, celebrity status, etc.) and physically (ex: oceans being full of plastic: fish eat it, we eat the fish). Neither has any nutritional value and can kill us metaphorically, physically, spiritually, and socially.

In general I loved the movie. The only thing I didn't understand was how it ended like it did. There were SO many things that weren't wrapped up. I was expecting it to be revealed that Vigo was undercover or for there to be a sting operation to get the plastic bar makers. So there was no point to the detective character except to have someone Vigo's character can talk to. The two women mechanics suddenly became killers and that was never explained and they were never caught. We never saw the inner beauty pageant - I was really looking forward to seeing other cool body evolutions that could be out there. Lastly, I was also expecting them to do another autopsy on the father and then another performance with Vigo's character when his organs develop more.

    • @Hypnosisqueenofdreams
      @Hypnosisqueenofdreams 2 года назад +1

I think the female mechanics killed the leader of the plastic eaters because his movement would make the chairs that they sell (and everyone has) obsolete. The plastic eaters are in a war with the mechanics and the detective as well, who I saw as upholding the status quo. The detective/someone he works with somehow got to the body of the child and tattood his organs before the autopsy could be performed, effectively ruining their political statement which was supposed to kickstart the movement for the plastic eaters.

IMO the final scene was Viggo character transitioning to a new metamorphosis of human evolution with plastic. Then that transformation being captured on film. I guarantee all these humans who're are unable to not feel pain are all descendants of people who got their pain receptors taken away from external forces. The humans who can't feel pain currently were all naturally born with that ability from people who externally got their pain experience taken away. Similar to the boy who was naturally born being able to eat plastic from a father who externally turn his body to digest plastic.

Finally got an opportunity to revel in the disturbing "mind-topia" of Cronenberg. As my career in health care is starting to wind down, I found the use of surgery as an artistic statement with the body as a canvas was all too real. Reminds me a lot of the photography of Brooklyn born artist, Joel-Peter Witkin. Also I couldn't help thinking about consuming plastic. As the world continues to dump waste, which animals consume...we in essence are eating plastic. Lastly, Léa Seydoux is one of the few actress' that doesn't get hung up about nudity. She knows how to commit to a scene. She certainly is a smart enough to realize the difference between naked and nude. Definitely on my top 5 films of the year. On the walk home, my mind was on this film quite a bit as society continues to change.

If you don't follow what I'm saying then consider this. Time is a saviour and destroyer simultaneously. It is your relative perception that colors it.

Loved this review. I think this Cronenberg movie is one where you get out of it what you bring to it.
I'll try to keep this as spoiler-free as possible.
For me, Viggo's story arc felt like an analogue for coming out of the closet. His surgeries-as-performance-art could represent performative heterosexuality as he struggles to deny who he is, alongside his partner. As the movie progresses, he comes to terms with who he is and what he needs to do to survive (which would explain the climax). The "New Vice" folks are trying to enforce what they believe is the social order & the Nat'l Organ Registry office could almost be seen as people who register those that don't fit that social order.
I could go into more details but that would potentially mean spoilers. But yeah, that's one interpretation of it that made sense to me.

Love Cronenberg's horror, although personally i kinda wished he would take it even further especially in this day and age. To me Videodrome still is one of the best movies of all time and it was revolutionary in its time, he was the first to have this merging of technology and media into a new kind of flesh to house our hedonistic souls.
Well this time is more like changing our bodies for the sake of creating art in a society that fetishizes surgery? Look, if you want it to make sense, when watching the movie whenever they say growth or tumor or new organ or gland, you replace it with the word idea (artistic idea). That's how i got the notion that maybe their lack of pain perception reflects how desensitized we are about to become (Viggo feels pain because he is the tortured artist).
The thing is i seen so many iterations of Cronenberg's work, so many movies that drew inspiration from it i wished this movie would be more, you know, extreme (or maybe i'm just too damn desensitized).I expected Cronenberg to take his theme of merging or changing the human form to new heights (instead of turning it into a recycle bin...really) I'm not saying i did not like the movie, the movie was great and he made all the cast look great, i even loved Kristen Stewart, i think she did an awesome job. I am a big fan of his use of practical effects but i can't say they where exceedingly gory (not to me anyway). My gripe was the ending, i thought it was too abrupt and as i said before it was a bit disappointing to me, although satisfyingly grotesque. That being said, it is a great comback from a director that influenced horror as we know it, and i hope he makes more movies.

Really looking forward to this. It's odd I don't find any of Cronenberg's films horrific at all. The low-fi effects work that he employs always pulls me out and at times is absolutely laughable. In his early work this is less of a problem but in films like Naked Lunch for eg. this becomes a problem that undermines the conceptual provocation and audacity that he always brings. Crash is probably his most successful film because it doesn't need sponge and latex muppetry.

I just saw Crimes of the Future (2022). I'm a big Cronenberg fan. Throughout Cronenberg's filmography, you will see these intense sexual relationships between the main characters. But the sexual aspect of the relationship is always based in deviant ground.
So with every film you taste a bit of strange erotic fruit from the Cronenberg basket. Some of the fruits you may enjoy and some you may not. But it's always an experience.
Personally, I think this is the key to Cronenberg's auteurship and the best way to enjoy his films.
I thought CotF was very erotic in a strangely Romantic way. The relationship between Tenser and Caprice reminded me of the one between Max and Nicki in Videodrome (1983). Two kindred spirits of the flesh captured in a technological environment, and trying to break out. Btw, Timlin apparently enjoyed the old way, and I was ready to give it to her... ;)
On the political side. This film made me realise that Cronenberg would have been well suited for a X-men film. He especially would have been a shoe in for the "God Loves, Man Kills" story, which was the basis for X-Men 2 (Singer, 2003). Maybe an eight hour series for Disney could do the trick...
    Always enjoy your content, James!

The acting was great and I was very taken by Stewart's performance in particular. Great general premise and atmosphere a well. That said, I didn't care for the 8 yr old understanding of anatomy and functional design throughout (completely laughable - like MST3K material), the new take on ATM, or child pee-pee. I also wouldn't call surgery the new sex (in this context) as much as the new blue hair and nose rings. If woke dystopia was the target, nailed it! Otherwise it's nice to see an 80 yr old still in touch with his inner tween. He has produced far better work than this.
