Honestly I even think that some of James Hetfield’s solos are better than a lot of Kirk’s solos and some of the most recognizable Metallica riffs like Enter Sandman main riff (which is overplayed) and Creeping Death breakdown (one of my favorites) are written by Kirk, which makes it seem like they are better when their roles are swapped
The Will of Creation didn't want Dave in Metallica because his style was totally differant and unique. But he didn't want to quit and Metallica didn't want to fire him, so the Will of Creation intervened and caused a conflict within Dave which caused him to get in a brawl with Metallica and get himself fired so he could form Megadeth. So essentially what really happened was Megadeth joined Metallica and then fired Metallica and got replacements for them.

His style is totally different and I think even without realizing it, Dave actually deep down wanted to start his own band but didn't want to quit Metallica so he just had a lot of internal turmoil over it that lead him to get frustrated and basically just erupt at some point and got fired for it so he could actually do what he was meant to do which was start Megadeth. But its still just a humorous and interesting plot twist.
Rust in Peace wouldn't have existed if he didn't get kicked. It really goes to show when one door closes, another will open. I wish sometimes we could have known what Metallica would have sounded like with Marty Friedman though.
probably would’ve sounded bad. sure kirk plays with some soul but i feel like marty’s solos feel a bit slower and like a “don’t listen to it but LISTEN to it” kind of soul. that probably would’ve ruined metallicas image a bit too and also with his literal sheeps head of hair lol. I doubt that. The truth is, Dave has never been the best guitarist in his own band, but I'm guessing that was by design. People crush Kirk for relying on pentatonic, but Jesus, have you heard Dave solo? He leans on pentatonic as well. It's just that he's always had a virtuoso in the band disguising it with killer leads that aren't pentatonic, so you don't feel like you're getting beat over the head with it. Dave is a great songwriter, and a killer guitarist in his own right, but lead wise, he is pentatonic guy, too. There's nothing wrong with it. I just find it funny how one sided the discussion is about Dave and Kirk.

Kirk's solos are (or WERE, during the 20th century) overall a lot more creative and diverse, and no less difficult to play, if you put the toughest of each side by side. But I think Dave's riffs are a lot more awesome.
Just one of the many what-ifs. Hell, Vinny and Dime almost joined Megadeth at one point. Just imagine that. It would've been one helluva an album or 2.... Though, my favorite music what-if involves Lars somehow dying instead of Cliff. As for no Kirk in Metallica, well, that probably would've just helped Exodus become more famous, probably enough for "big 4" status(though if it were 6 instead, Exodus and Testament would be in the list anyway).
