I remember watching this fight as a boy with my grandfather. Even as a kid I could sense the sad injustice of what happened to Marlon. Remember the context: Before the fight we see a little biographical story of Marlon, a truly good man doing what so few chose to do, raise a boy with love and tenderness by himself. And Marlon's son looked like such a sweet kind kid, dropping the football with a kind bashful smile that we can all remember as little boys. Hoping that fate has been kinder to Marlon and his son since this date. Peace

Marlon is good. He wasn't that motivated to box after he beat Honeyghan, he hated making 147 (hence his attempt at MW vs. Nunn) and was sick of losing split and/or majority decisions, and the corrupt biz of boxing so he only fought 2x after the Nunn fight which is crazy. His ex wife took him to the cleaners, unfairly if you ask him. Then he took a bunch of different jobs over the years. But as he said, he has his health, he drives a decent car, he has food in his fridge, and good loving kids and grandkids, and that he never boxed for money anyway. No bitterness. But just because the WBA let Molinares keep the title despite New Jersey declaring it a No contest (meaning Marlon should've kept the belt) he lost $500k in purse vs. Honeyghan as he was not a champion and had to take a small percentage split. He had one of the most unique and weird and unlucky careers. Reminds me a little of Mauricio Herrera or King Rosado in terms of the unlucky shit that came their way.

@@joeblough261 Thanks for the update and really glad he's doing well, as so many fighters don't. Total injustice what happened to him in this fight. If Starling had been a "big name" there's no way he would not have retained his belt here, but boxing politics and the alphabet organisations stink and will prett much always do the wrong thing if given a chance to do so.

This lead to the next welterweight doubleheader which was billed as "The Mystery of the Welterweights" on February 4th 1989. Morlinares didn't defend the title once, as he was suffering from depression and inability to make the weight. So Mark Breland would fight for the vacant title instead of meeting Morlinares, he fought Seung Soon Lee. Who he knocked out in 54 seconds.

    • @johncohen9800
      @johncohen9800 3 года назад +6

Exactly. Couldn't agree more. The reason why Starling was hit after the bell was not because he had turned around to go to his corner or because he stopped upon hearing the bell.
He was in the process of throwing his own right hand!
If he had landed first and knocked out Molinares, no one would have cared.

  • @ppuh6tfrz646

Did Ray Leonard have some kind of hearing and sight impairment??
The footage is replayed several times, the last time with the action frozen as the bell rings and it's there for all to see.
Yet he continues to maintain that Molinares' right hand punch was in motion!!
    *Is he taking the piss??*
Molinares was still throwing the *left hand* punch that went before it when the bell rang!!
I don't understand how this was deemed a no-contest (correctly) but Molinares was then allowed to keep the title!!!
In a no-contest, there isn't a winner, there isn't a loser so how can Starling lose his title?
Starling should have kept the title and an immediate rematch should have been ordered by the WBA.

Bout should have been a no contest and rematch scheduled

Joe "I'm Fair But Firm" Cortez screwed up badly, but has too much ego to ever admit his mistake. Two weeks later Larry Hazard of the New Jersey Boxing Comm. voided the bout's result, but a day after his ruling the WBA crowned Molinares its new champion anyway. The guy got knocked out in his next 2 bouts and was never heard from again.

After the bell. Horrible way to lose a title. Still, if it hadn't knocked him out, it's not blatant enough to have warranted a foul. There is like a half-second grace period after the bell, as fighters can't hold back a shot they've decided to throw that fast just because of the limitations of human reflexes. Really difficult situation. Given that Molinares wasn't heard from again, the better call would have been to DQ him. Champ's privilege. They couldn't have known that at the time, though.

You know...former referee and then NJ State Boxing Commissioner Larry Hazzard rose to his position because he was deemed to be honest and forthright. He was a breath of fresh air in boxing. After this fight, he showed that any man can be bought. How he could possibly look at that replay twice and say emphatically the punch started before the bell rang shows just how far he fell. There has never been a more blatant foul in boxing than this one. HBO should have frozen the replay for Larry right after the bell sounded. It would have shown Molinares' right hand at his waist. But you didn't need to do that. It was so obvious in real time. Slimy decision and the best slime was yet to come 2 weeks later.
