I will always love Ghost for looking like a Norwegian black metal band, then sounding like something you'd hear in the background of a Scooby-Doo movie. Never, ever change!
Ha ha! I haven’t seen this video since we made it ten years ago. Just looked it up now to show my girlfriend. Feels awesome to read the comments about the look. The shoddy camerawork is what really sells it to me. A lot of music videos use a VHS effect, but don't go all the way, so you end up with something that's arranged, choreographed, lit, shot and cut like a typical 2020 video with a filter slapped on. This one set and two cameras really impress me! They totally created a feel that only the music or the guitars would give it away that it isn't lost footage or something.
I agree, it's amazingly authentic, everything from the unsteady zooming to the shift from one object to the next, like the cameraman suddenly realizes there's something interesting just out of picture. The 70's purple orange colors and the pentagonal prisms from the candlelights just gives me the retrochills⚡🔥
It's not shoddy IMO, it reminds me of late sixties. Something you'd see from "Smothers Brothers", it's got that 'recorded live in Burbank feel'. Pretty sure this video was done that way on purpose.

It was the same for Lordi, it is a gimmick but there's nothing wrong with that, as long as the music comes first the look adds to it, ABBA, David Bowie, KISS and many others.

Whoever made this video spent A LOT of time studying the idiosyncrasies of rock music videos from the 70s. The camera shots and zooms, going in and out of focus. The stage and lighting, etc; Like a weird dream like version of Don Kirshners Rock Concert. Well done!

For the most part, there seems to be an inverse correlation between popularity and quality in metal. But I'll be damned if Ghost doesn't deserve all 6 million of those views. One of the best bands out today.
0:39 A master class in how to make something look and feel heavy as shit while not using any of the modern crutches (Screams/growls, blast beats, drop tuned guitars, etc.)
I am a Slayer, PanterA, Devildriver, Opeth and similar devoted genre metal head. When I first heard Ghost BC, I was like "What is this weak crap poser noise?" After listening to them a bit more I have to be honest, I am changing my mind. Their arrangements tend to linger in the brain with a unique sound that is not easy to emulate. They portray a dark side without having to "out metal" everyone. That's a refreshing change. Digging these guys more and more!
I'm in love with their simply awesome music and album covers, and lyrics, and remarkable and unique performance at Rock In Rio 2013. I'm in love, this is just perfect
I like the instrumentals, guitars solos, and others,I am not part of any religion but some letters of them are very exaggerated in Satanism, but in Rock In Rio 2013 they have not been good and even was booed.
This is the song and the video which introduce me into ghost. I remember I was expecting some kind of gutural shit due to the badass look of them, but then I heard the sweet and powerful voice of Tobias . I remember they were not very famous, so it was all of this stuff felt like very mystical and misterious. AWWW man, I miss the old sound of ghost. New stuff is good tho, but the older albums are pure gold and not comercial shit.
I really miss the way ghost presented themselves around when this came out. This song is a good representation of the mysterious and trance like vibe they had with infestissiumam
But in contrast, I think that their best album, and by far, is Meliora. It is mind boggling that there could be so many exceptional songs in a single album, all their albums are great and have great songs but this one just buries all the others in terms of the music itself
I completely agree with you that musically Meliora is their best album, and by far, love nearly every song on it; I think it’s their best produced album as well but I agree with the OP, Issiah, that papa 2 and his ghouls were my favorite look for the band, didn’t like Papa 3 losing the hat and not crazy about the Cardinal’s look either, if he were just some creepy old dude then it’d be fine but considering he’s supposed to be a cardinal from the same satanic clergy that brought us the papas and he’s dressing in snazzy suits, it just takes away from the cult element IMO
I love when the camera zooms in close to Papa’s face and there are dark shadows in his already blacked out eyes/eye sockets. Hands down the best music video

@@bilalcan2366 You CAN'T mean that THIS singer uses autotune, do you? IF you do, have a listen to Ghost LIVE, listen to "Year zero" Live at Hellfest, that'll teach you about a great singer singing LIVE. THAT performance will knock you on your ass.
I love that my first introduction to Papa is also the most viewed moment of this video. A bunch of those views are legit from me, lol. He just comes in, takes it all in like "yes, this is as it should be", and starts kicking ass. I love it.
Anyone who says this band has weak vocals needs to get a life. Every band is different, maybe they don't want to do the traditional screaming in most doom metal bands. In fact I like how they take their music onto the melodic side. Don't like it? Don't comment, don't listen, and go listen to another band.
Exactly, that's why I like how they make it more different sounding. It's creative and I like it. It's not your traditional sound but it's still good music. People just get the wrong idea because first they look at the image and think "oh this'll be brutal" but it turns out to not be and they hate because they're upset. Idiots.
i like how melodic it is and that you can understand what he is saying. metal bands that have screaming singers is a turn off to listening to their music
True. There are some metal bands I listen to that have more brutal vocals but not too brutal so you can't understand what they're saying when they sing. Most of the metal I listen to has melodic vocals, some of them brutal and distorted but not over the top brutal like metalcore. With Ghost I think the vocals suit the band.
Ghost has a unique clean and precise sound, when I first heard their music I didn't liked it, but after a few songs I couldn't stop listening and now absolutely love them.
Ghost is amazing, and they are my favorite band........but they are not metal. I am a metal-head, and ghost fits the genre in as far as the lyrics, but they are not a metal BAND. Their first album was metal, and there were a few metal tracks on Infestissumam, as well as Meloria and Prequelle. That said, they are far too diverse and complex to give a label like “metal” to. Just look at songs like “missionary man”, “if you have ghost”, “he is”, “See the light”, and “dance macabre”, just to name a few. They are all decidedly not metal, but more of an alternative rock. That’s why I tend not to say anything along the lines of “ghost is a/an _________ band”. That said, if I HAD to give them a genre-specific title, I would say that they are black heavy alternative rock.
I just love how he looks like he was plucked out of a different realm, like from the film reel of an old horror movie for example, and was dropped into the middle of a rock concert deciding to look around saying, "fuck it", immediately dominating his new domain
Papa Alfons no they may both rule what is technically the "Underworld", but their mythology is completely different in the fact that we know more about Hades then we do Satan Hades is also actually a god, as he's the god of the underworld Satan is considered a heathen, and didnt start out as evil or ruling anything if I'm correct, Satan started out as an angel named Lucifer, but got sent down to Hell because he did wrong, so he was a fallen angel Hades and Satan are two completely different beings, but considered the same because they both technically rule the Underworld
So grateful for seeing this thumbnail and discovering my favorite musical artist of all time through this video. Genius, and has brought so much joy to life and so much fellowship.
It's interesting how there's so many comments saying how the vocals surprised them. I felt the same way when I first heard them. Problem is, I'd seen pics of them before I heard them. We're conditioned into expecting metal bands to all have either Cookie Monster or screaming vox these days. This band invokes Blue Oyster Cult, Boston, The Doors, King Diamond/Merciful Fate. Such a unique sound. The vocals are more haunting than the run of the mill "angry" sounding vox throughout most of hard rock/metal today.
Did you guys actually sell your souls to the Devil? I ask because I've never heard a band where I like every single song they make. Normally you hear an album, pick the 1 or 2 good songs from it, and listen to them over and over. But I listen to every single Ghost album indefinitely.
I've known Ghost for almost 2 years and barely this September I got SO into them. it's ridiculous. I knew they were coming. I skipped other bands because "well in really want to see Ghost" lol their show was insane. I haven't stopped listening to them and I fall in love deeper and deeper.. I have a theory. Maybe Ghost actually did sell their soul to Satan to make us believe they make amazing music just so Satan can gain more followers :D

Yeah don't let the Satanic imagery thing put you off, I don't think they're actually Satanic. Ghost takes a lot of inspiration from that era of music you're talking about. Like the 70s, hard rock and acid rock, even some elements of heavy metal a la Black Sabbath.

To all the people claiming that they came into this expecting it to be super gritty black metal with blastbeats and screaming and such, and then saying these guys aren't metal because they aren't like that... you say that as if being unexpected is a bad thing. You know what I say IS metal? Anything that is rebelllious, unusual, anything that goes against the grain. And these guys definitely do, dressing like a hybrid of Immortal and Sunn0))), but sounding unexpectedly more like Blue Oyster Cult or early Black Sabbath. They are making a name for themselves and becoming famous by being unusual and interesting and going against expectations, while dozens of black metal bands are falling by the wayside into obscurity because they are generic, run-of-the-mill, same-old-same-old corpsepainted blastbeat screaming black metal, bringing nothing new or interesting to the genre. If you want to get ahead in the metal world, you have to be different and interesting and bring something unexpected to the genre, and Ghost sure as hell does that. So if you're angry at them for not being black metal, or accusing them of being not 'true' metal because they're not what you expected... why do you want Ghost to be exactly what you expect? Why do you want them to be generic and boring?
not that i disagree with you but what you are describing could easily be mistaken for punk rather than metal. Thats probably what draws me to those genres so much though and one could make many arguments that they are one in the same.
Michael Goelz Certainly there's a good measure of punk influence in metal, just like rock, blues, jazz, etc, but bands like Ghost, Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, etc, aren't punk bands, they are metal to the core. Metal dates back from the late 60s, way before Metallica, Meshuggah, or other bands that you would deem metal. Just because metal evolved agressivelly in sound that does not mean the old, original sound is not metal; maybe it's the other way around.
Michael Welshim not hating on them i think there pretty cool dont know much about them but i really dont think there metal more like old school rock thats all ... and how could you compare them to Oyster or Sabbath?? lol
Saw these guys live in 2014 they were killer. The stage presence they had was amazing with their all black robes and the smoke and fog. They were awesome and their sound was on point.
Saw them at Rock in Rio this year... Let me tell you one thing: every single soul in the place booed them, but I liked, and sometimes I got myself singing with them. Stop with this prejudice and enjoy rock and roll, guys.
Agreed, but come Maiden fans treating the other acts like crap is pretty standard. Wasn't at the show so can't comment on if it was worse than usual. Keep your fingers crossed for a headline tour in south America for a better experience.
I remember seeing these guys last year in my native country Denmark. It was at a Metallica show. Ghost was the first warm-up band to come on and i litterally thought that my brothers and I were going to die.. They looked soooo scary, and i was certain that they were going to blast the craziest black metal ever heard through the speakers. Never had i been more wrong or more surprised when they opened up with "Ritual". 1: Metal elitist/snobs hate it, cause It's DIFFERENT (like, BABYMETAL).
2: It's a "gimmick" (like, KISS).
something like: whaaa i cant put a label on it
+Pucho_23Paradox Or because they're Satanic and satanists have an image of sacrificing shit. It's truly a disgrace. Satanism isn't as bad as modern people make it seem. It's no different than Christianity.
the cheap public service quality works beautifully! i could imagine seeing this on the telly in the middle of the night as a kid and be genuinely terrified.
@Cult Mechanicus i expected at least one wanker with a comment like that. 'terrified' doesn't mean i'd be put off by it. i grew up on troma flicks, all things splatter and horror, but non-graphic and often psychological stuff would give me nightmares. if i happen to catch a video like this at night i'd probably think i was being introduced to an actual cult, i'd be terrified but deeply intrigued.

@@Soggyliquid Exactly! I'd end up obsessing, and trying to learn as much about it as I could, and probably end up hooked for life. In the best way possible.

Whoever made this video spent A LOT of time studying the idiosyncrasies of rock music videos from the 70s. The camera shots and zooms, going in and out of focus. The stage and lighting, etc;
Like a weird dream like version of Don Kirshners Rock Concert.
Well done!

I discovered them two months ago and now I think thats the best band in the world.

For the most part, there seems to be an inverse correlation between popularity and quality in metal. But I'll be damned if Ghost doesn't deserve all 6 million of those views. One of the best bands out today.
Ghost is so ahead of their time, this will be popular in the 60's
The key change so early at 0:24 really sets this whole song up for feeling as weird as it does. It's really exceptional song writing.
the bass in this gives me life
The bass at the beginning of From the Pinnacle To the Pit tho
This really does look like the 70's , love Ghost!
This song is like climbing back into the womb. This was my first ghost song ever. I'm nearly in tears listening to it just for the love of it.

This video has yet to be topped. Still my favorite.
Your comment is 7 years old!!! Happy August 29, 2021!!!
Idk who people love Meliora, for me it was really weak at all.
@@harbinger7115 it has everything Ghost is combined into one album basically imo, I also think it's their best so far!
Last true Ghost album . This was the line up which understood good old school hard progressive rock / heavy Metal . Was all downhill from here .
This is my favorite Ghost music video. It's so hypnotic.
I love the setting like an old variety show from the 60's/70's. Tobias knows what he's doing.
I love when the camera zooms in close to Papa’s face and there are dark shadows in his already blacked out eyes/eye sockets. Hands down the best music video
That's the way you tune a snare. A perfect snare sound, not tuned too high, fits the tune perfectly.
Papa/Tobias has one of the best voices I've ever heard 😍
Sarah Quince his voice on the Bible cover is fucking stunning (it always is but especially there)
Papa has so much control over his voice, it's honestly outstanding.
With autotune everybody sounds good. Good studio band
Bilal Can i saw him live and he definitely doesnt need auto tune. Obviously studio will have some touch ups but his voice is amazing and honestly better live
I think if he was screaming it would take away from the band and just turn them into a generic death/screamo/whateversubgenre band.
You should try The Devil's Blood if you like Ghost.
Ghost has a unique clean and precise sound, when I first heard their music I didn't liked it, but after a few songs I couldn't stop listening and now absolutely love them.
Man I love the early years of Ghost!
I feel sorry for people who cannot live in the duality of GOD! I am a Christian, and I love Ghost! Come together!!! Together as ONE!!!!
They ARE real metal, just a smooth sounding metal. I LOVE GHOST anyway, who cares IF someone else doesn't get it?
See you're awesome for saying that
Ghost is amazing, and they are my favorite band........but they are not metal.
If only they only had black metal vocals
@@regancorbett1562 metal doesn't have to be screaming and growling and blast beats for the whole album. It involves many different subgenres.
They're metal in the same tone musically that Black Sabbath is.
I just love how he looks like he was plucked out of a different realm, like from the film reel of an old horror movie for example, and was dropped into the middle of a rock concert deciding to look around saying, "fuck it", immediately dominating his new domain
I forget that they are humans sometimes..
Celestial Cult They seem too much like gods.
Ghost Writer i dont think gods would be underworld leaders
Ghost Writer unless hades
LuminZz isn't hades satan?
Papa Alfons no
they may both rule what is technically the "Underworld", but their mythology is completely different in the fact that we know more about Hades then we do Satan
Hades is also actually a god, as he's the god of the underworld
Satan is considered a heathen, and didnt start out as evil or ruling anything
if I'm correct, Satan started out as an angel named Lucifer, but got sent down to Hell because he did wrong, so he was a fallen angel
Hades and Satan are two completely different beings, but considered the same because they both technically rule the Underworld
So grateful for seeing this thumbnail and discovering my favorite musical artist of all time through this video. Genius, and has brought so much joy to life and so much fellowship.
Ghost is more addictive than cocaine
Cocaine is a hell of a drug - Rick James
#Facts! I recently discovered the band and now I simply cannot get enough.
Sure is not
Are they more addictive than opiates?
@@craigbrock847 I think so, yes!
+Saboth Same here!
+Saboth Exactly my words to my husband when i introduce him to Ghost
I've known Ghost for almost 2 years and barely this September I got SO into them. it's ridiculous. I knew they were coming. I skipped other bands because "well in really want to see Ghost" lol their show was insane. I haven't stopped listening to them and I fall in love deeper and deeper.. I have a theory. Maybe Ghost actually did sell their soul to Satan to make us believe they make amazing music just so Satan can gain more followers :D
Well, it's a theory! XD I think the same thing too sometimes tbh

I find it interesting we older people often use qualifiers to give more credence to certain bands. Ghost is certainly deserved of justification.
No one cares how old you are dude
Yeah don't let the Satanic imagery thing put you off, I don't think they're actually Satanic. Ghost takes a lot of inspiration from that era of music you're talking about. Like the 70s, hard rock and acid rock, even some elements of heavy metal a la Black Sabbath.

This was the first song/clip I saw from Ghost. I was (and still) instant in love with them. Everything about this is awesome!
I can't believe I only just discovered this band. They are AMAZING and dripping with talent. Am totally addicted!
Michael Welshim not hating on them i think there pretty cool dont know much about them but i really dont think there metal more like old school rock thats all ... and how could you compare them to Oyster or Sabbath?? lol
Josh Parker well, then lol at yourself for not knowing at you're talking about. :)
You can explain yourself all you want, but this group is a joke. I would of enjoyed it but the beat annoys my ears and the lead singers voice sucks.
I miss that ghost era. That's what the band was when it captivated me deeply
If my kids aren’t gonna listen to this band when they grow up, i don’t want them.
Give them to me. I'd love them

It was such a delight to see someone with a new perspective towards the metal scene, and not just some poser band blasbeating throughout the show.
