Except it's not just Amsterdam, Amsterdam is only a small part of the Netherlands. Our whole country is like that. Nobody even thinks about a life without our trusty (usually old) bikes. Most studens bike to school and a lot of people bike to work everyday, disregarding the weather.

Yes but it took children dying and the political will to make an (at the time) unpopular decision and force it through for the greater good.
Many governments no longer have the desire to do this, they simply want to remain in power and be re-elected so they won't do things like the Netherlands did back in the 70s :-(

    No gas
    No insurance
    No payments
    Free parking
    Best parking space
    Daily exercise
    No pollution
But, you have to know what you’re doing. Get more leg power & the right seat height. Choose easy streets with slow traffic. Make sure you’re seen. Compensate. Defend. Prevent. But most of all have fun

I have a Jeep and two bikes. I'm all for creating bike friendly communities. This is a needed amenity. It attracts the outdoorsy crowd that appreciates natural surroundings. A bike makes getting from point a to b far more fun. More greenways, more trails, yes. I can still justify keeping my Jeep. But I hate clogged traffic jams! With my bike I can go faster than gridlocked cars. So nice to do that .

Use a car for driving long distance and comfortable but it is expensive, you pay for gas insurance and maintenance. Use bike for exercise, healthy and lose your weight and cheaper ( little maintenance only). The both needs safety and safety of driving a car or riding a bike. Car needs license, but the bike not. Most people thought that the rider of the bike is for poor people only and they think the riding of the bike never concern about the time management, will reach too late but healthy and waste time for the world changing every minute.

I own a Italian sports car which is very temperamental. I had to fix the constant velocity joints, locking brakes, shift linkage broke and now somekind of wire problem that does not allow me to start with the key. So I have been riding my bike to work 10 miles away. it takes me 50 minutes. And since I have a desk job this means that I get exercise that may be preventing diseases. Humans are not design for inactivity, they need to move and bicycles are just perfect to get exercise. People at work ask me why i dont drive? Get a car they tell me. I tell them that my bike cost more than their car. That leaves them thinking

The audience are Chinese. In their culture its considered rude to make any noise during a presentation or a speech. An American professor was puzzled because no student asked him any question during an entire presentation and later he learnt that its considered rude to ask a question during a presentation in chinese culture. So its a form of discipline.

exactly! In China, the classes normally pretty quiet, the only way to ask a question is to raise your hand and stand up (at least in High School, idk it will be a difference in College). In middle school and high school, or primary school, some teacher will even punish the student because they did not raise their hand to ask a question(did not raise the hand to ask is considering rude)

Cycling is great in many ways, and has changed my life, but please don't forget the disabled, people with pets (can't manage 3 dogs on my bike ), grocery shopping, each mode of transporation has it's place, some things you still need a vehicle for. There are times when I still really need my car.

Disabled on electric wheelchairs or small electric cars. Pets, children and smaller amount of groceries on your bike, ebike or on a cargo bike. Rent a car or use car share for bigger stuff or longer distances. All of this is thought about and handled in cities like Amsterdam. Watch channel like Not Just Bikes, a Canadian living in Amsterdam, if you want more insight. A brilliant channel.

So i need to drive. If only s.w Florida was more biker friendly. And people are dying almost every day on bikes here, getting hit by cars. I've been hit three times.

I have 4 bikes and i hate cars, but you cannot compare cars with bikes, no way, the car is a car and the bike is a bike for sport, fun, hobby, or pro races, but u must have a car if u live in some far away village or town, in city its perfect for bikes, u can take it everywhere, trains buss, and no worry about parking.

Cars are amazing tools and in a lot of ways are indispensable, purely on the basis of how we've allowed infrastructure to develop. That said, I think anyone can adapt their life to be able to reduce or eliminate car usage. In some cases it's not easy and comes with other costs (time and convenience, namely). That doesn't mean it's not possible! Give it a shot, I dare you.

    • @barvdw
      @barvdw 5 лет назад

But why do you live so far away? Maybe because you can't afford to live closer by? Not owning a car is a great way to save some money, which can be invested in, e.g. a better situated house. If I'd have to pay for a car, I probably wouldn't be able to afford my inner city condo, but exactly living in the inner city has allowed me to do my commute, shopping, entertainment... by bike. I could afford a bigger house somewhere in the suburbs, but would not have saved a penny for it, as I would have been forced to buy a car to get to work, get my groceries or go out. I would loose time getting my kids to school, practice or whatever, things older children can do independently in a city. It largely depends on your chosen lifestyle.

    • @cipher.u.justice
      @cipher.u.justice 4 года назад +6

@@richardmcginnis5344 This is the absolute truth. The reality is that it costs a fortune to build protected lanes and install bike-specific traffic lights. This is a real struggle because the automobile industry owns the bureaucracy everywhere. We already have the infrastructure (roads) and laws in place, we just lack the cultural mindset and a real push to inform the public that cyclists are (and therefore SHOULD BE) treated as any other traffic on the road: safely and with respect. Until the greater public learns such tolerance, cycling will be stuck being treated as niche, for "poor people", "kids", and enthusiasts.

But I've also almost gotten hit and killed by cars in traffic which is why many are too scared to ride. Our smartest people should shift away from car technology and focus on bike and public transpo technology and infrastructure if we hope to save humanity from itself.

Not owning a car is one of the best choices I ever made and has shaped my whole life in many positive ways. Cycling is one of the loves of my life and I enjoy every single ride. We have been brainwashed and duped into believing that mass car use is acceptable, desirable and pleasurable. And that owning a particular kind if car equates with status and success. The car (and the oil we put in it) is driving us!!! We behave like robots. But we don't have to. Wake up!!! Step away from the car and go for a ride. Bikes rock!!!

As a cyclist for over 55 years, I've commuted, cycle-camped and picked up the groceries all over Britain including Glasgow, rural communities in the North of England, and London, on the roads already there.
Ride confidently and competently on the road. I'm not saying you won't get hit by someone scrolling through their playlist, but that shouldn't keep you off the roads.

Didn't learn to drive until I was in my early forties. Still rode for a year of two but a change of job meant I needed to drive to get to work. Consequeently gained about 2 stones in weight. Now, 15 years after pretty much stopping I borrowed my sons bike over the summer holidays. In six weeks, riding 10 miles or so three times a week I feel unbelieveable. I'm going to have to figure out how to keep it going in my spare time once I'm back at work. Which will be next week. I too believe that they should be on prescription. Nothing, but nothing lifts my spirit quite like a ride around the canal network where I live...Leek, Staffordshire.

My commute to work was 15 minutes by car or 25 on the bike. So for only an extra 10 minutes each way, I got to incorporate exercise into my day and not take an hour after work, away from my family, to go run etc.
Now my commute is a bit closer, 15-18 minutes on the bike or about 15 by car (heavier traffic so slower average speed by car, compared to cruising in the bike lane and only stopping at the red lights.)
I am also lucky enough to have a shower and lockers at my workplace.

I don't think it helped loose weight, but has helped me with endurance and speed. I used hit the gym 6 days a week, now since I started cycling I have probably been to the gym 7 days a month. To make matters worse, biking infrastructure in the Philippines (Manila) is almost 0. Bike lanes are just an afterthought and roads have gazillion of potholes. And people think that I'm a cheapskate. But why do I ride? Ecological, economic, health (physical/mental) and I-value-time reasons.

I ride my road bike 10 miles a day. I'm for what this guy is saying. Its a form of exercise that don't feel like exercise. I have never understood spinners indoors. About China, however, its not only cycling=poor now, its cycling=breathing polution. We go to Beijing and Shanghai 3-4 times a year, hardly ever see a blue sky. I've been in Beijing numerous times and I turn on my iPhone and I'm reading a warning for the day for people with health or breathing problems to stay indoors if possible.

I own a car but use it very little except in summer . I can roll down my windows and torment people with loud stoner music such as Jimi Hendrix and Zappa . The other 99 percent is on bike and to a lesser extent on public transit . Yes I ride my bike high on cannabis but I don't drive car high . That would be dangerous .

biking is so much fun, it relieves stress, not creates it and keeps you in shape. Plus it's way cheaper than a car. (and faster if you're in a town and have less than a mile to go because of parking)

Who would live in Chengdu, when you could live in "Tongue Duel!" Somebody should make a compilation video of best/worst closed captioning mishaps from various videos.

Well if you get in an accident more than likely you'll die, rather than live to suffer lifelong injuries from a car driving accident. Also you could get a massive payout for injuries with a good lawyer, you won't have to work for the rest of your life IF you survive. And if you DIE, the person who ran you over pays for your funeral, so you get a FREE funeral!

the only reason you need a car is to drive over a country in a short(ish) time. Bycicles are faster in a city.
