It's amazing to see how with most commuters stuck at home due to corona, with many streets being car free, just how many people have chosen to cycle to places. It really shows that people really do want to cycle, given the right conditions.
I have a foldable Bicycle, I carry the cycle with me while visiting my daughter' s home for easy transportation in their city. I am now 62, cycling helps my health
The Netherlands is cycling Heaven, and not to many misserable people on bicycles either, almost all cycle with a smile on there faces, and the school children cycle to school instead of being driven, or they get the Bus. What a great place to be on a Bicycle.
Miss Bambrick, I as a Dutch person, I feel a little hurt. The Netherlands is also a bike Heaven...😭😭 Side note... I never owned a car (do have a driver's licence) and can't remember how many bikes I had. But I own 4 bikes at this moment. 1 city bike (grandpa style) 1 all terrain bike and 2 folding bikes.. And the helmet is not necessary when you protect the cyclist in other ways, likely law... Loved the talk of course. And I am happy to show you around the Netherlands on 1 of my bikes....😉🥰
Making a city bike friendly is obviously a life quality perk. Maybe having a bike friendly city attracts a healthier crowd of people to your city? That's going to have a positive economic and creative impact. People follow the amenities they seek.
It's both. A bike friendly city attracts only slightly more healthy people. But the biggest impact is that the existing population becomes healthier because they get more exercise, kids grow up healthier, etc. Kids become more self sufficient and independent much earlier because they van go places by themselves. There's less noise and air pollution increasing health, there's more space for public space , recreation and greenery, again reducing stress, increasing air quality, and increasing health. Streets are safer, traffic is calmer, reducing even car accidents. And so on. And then there's much cheaper construction cost and minimal maintenance costs. There's a bike path near where I live that carries 3000 to sometimes 5000 bikes every day. It's now over 20 years old and has never needed maintenance. Many studies, mostly from the Netherlands and other bike friendly countries, have shown that every euro invested in bike infra actually ends up creating a net return for society/government and thus tax payers, of up to 8 euro due to all these positive feedback loops.
Lesson learned: you are NOT stuck in traffic, YOU all are traffic... -for short trips people use cars, lazy ... :) -vulnerability can be practiced on a bike Thanks TEDdy!
To me the cars are not funny, you can t feel any freedom and make you stress. Bicycle in the other hand make you feel free, you can take any way, stop any place, is wonderfull. I LOVE IT !!!!
Build the infrastructure & the people will use it. The first part of this statement is the most difficult. Sharing major roads & having disconnected cycleways is the main disincentive. .

Anton Lissenberg going to the Netherlands won't teach you how to cycle safely and properly, it will teach you what a healthy government bike infrastructure looks like, but ultimately American cycling doesn't come down to what individuals know so much as how our infrastructure is laid out
It's actually because they use less road space. Leave the car for long journeys. Does any car manufacturer tell the buyer it won't work properly until it's done 2miles and warmed the engine?
If you thought that during the time of this video biking was big look at it now bikes sold out everywhere cause of COVID and people are cycling more. Colorado is very good with it's bike infrastructure, you can go from Castle rock to Denver or really anywhere on bike path
Only I use my bike if the weather is good and in the summer. Usually I took my bike around my city and I enjoyed and I look to the people are smiling to me wow
imagine if we could close some roads to vehicles so children can play road hockey and everyone can walk and ride safely. imagine downtown streets landscaped into grass, trees, flowers, benches, cinder paths ! sounds of birds and bees, instead of horns and engines and sirens.
I drive hundred of miles to cover five states for work, but really like riding to my local grocery store or pub. I try to minimize trips under 5 miles which is most car trips in many places.
I have watched a lot of videos on the benefits of bike riding. But not one person, out of the hundreds of videos on RUclips, mentioned the one fear of not getting a bike. The fear of getting a flat and being stuck in the middle of nowhere. You think someone who have mentioned that one small important issue.
Bicycles make people themselves more vulnerable, true, but they also make you far less likely to kill someone else, which is itself a kind of vulnerability. Between the choice of potentially getting hit and injured or killed or hitting someone else and potentially injuring or killing them and having to deal with all the lawsuits and guilt that would follow for the rest of your life, I'd rather choose the former.
I never thought car doors could just fly open till i saw a clyde speed into one in portland. It tacoed like Richard's car door in Tommy Boy. He wailed but seemed okay.
I saw a woman bike against an opening car door right in front of my home a few years ago. I am quite certain she broke her jaw because it got thick really quickly. No wailing though and probably no damage to the door. Since then I always take a little more space than I used to, just in case.
Cyclists need to obey the same laws on the road as cars. Yes, STOP SIGNS are for bikes too. If everyone follows the rules it makes things safer for everyone.
Unfortunately my country is not bike friendly. And in my city kolkata banned bicycle by traffic police on almost every important roads. Cyclists have to pay fine if they use those roads. :( It's sad that this s the main reason that many people do not cycling to work but they want to. However i use bicycle for my commute every single day. And i love to. Its quite adventurous in my own city because, we cyclist do not get enough room for us on road. Rather motorbikers or car drivers try to dominate us.
Great that you are still cycling in Kolkata Snigdha. 3 years ago I cycled from Delhi to Kolkata and loved the ride. And Kolkata was the city that I liked the most in India. Very intellectual and cultural city. But I missed the bicycles so much there. Kolkata could really become a much more liveable city if they started to think bikes in to the local infrastructure.
Bicycles are a great thing. I don't think they should replace cars tho. I mean - good luck trying to carry a weight. Rather, they should replace public transporting (which will never work).
There aren't too many cars in my opinion. Rather, there are too many cities. And too many busses also. Bicycles are great, but cannot replace cars in everything.
It's amazing what you can haul with a bike ... With a car you can haul 150 times more. Heck you can even buy groceries for a month instead of just a few days. And I love this lady calling this progress... as if it was.....
Apparently you didn't progress far enough to realise that by far most of the time people don't to haul big loads. Or that it's healthier to eat fresh food. And I don't know where you live but for me it's much faster to get groceries by bike. As for the elderly. For just about any occasion here, an electric bike is better for them than a car. Faster, and they get exercise.
I ride pedal assist , electric , and , "I AM TRAFFIC" Get behind me !!! I do not stay on the side . Local speed limit is now 25 in NYC area , I do that easily , and feel more safe , yet , still have "NUMBNUTS" wishing to speed past me , only to stop in 50 yards or so behind another "NUMBNUT" CAR DRIVER
It's not very comfortable. We learn cycling from age of several months (yes), we're on public road cycling when we're 2-3 years old. Because we start early, we're all just very good cyclers who also know how to fall (and prevent head injury). In general, only speed cyclers or toddlers will use a helmet as they are too unexperienced are go much faster. On a grander scale, it's less safe. people will go by bike less (when helmets are mandatory meaning more pollution, car rides, et cetera. there's actual research for this as well as statistics (look up New Zealand).
Your helmet will save your life if your head hits into a windshield. If you hit another bike at slower speeds your probably going to scrape your hands. If cars are virtually out of the equation the helmet is less important.
This lady missed the point. Infrastructure is item #2. Police enforcement of bike theft is #1. You cannot ride your bike for transportation if it keeps getting stolen, and is therefore unreliable and expensive.
Bike infrastructure includes safe parking and short-term storage. Urban and suburban businesses know what the economic studies show: an investment in bicycle parking yields more than three times what car parking does, in revenue per sq. meter. Plus, any police officer will tell you bike theft is a crime of opportunity. Safe parking facilities take away that opportunity. This makes municipal governments happy because their police are freed up to pursue other criminal activities (like car theft, domestic violence, etc.).
This is sooo outdated.. Nobody wants to live in a city anymore. People are leaving in droves... In fact thousands per day now that we live in the world of Plague not to mention the crime and the cost of living. Cars are Fantastic. Especially if you are older or in ill health. It gives you freedom!
It's amazing to see how with most commuters stuck at home due to corona, with many streets being car free, just how many people have chosen to cycle to places.

1h of commuting burns 500 kcal btw.
1h of training burns 700-900 kcal
1h of driving a car burns $10 in gas.

It's easier for a woman to choose semi smart clothes to cycle in, than it is for a man to cycle in a suit.
Yeah. And rolling up a suit doesn't really work either (it won't look very good). Suits are terrible and should be eliminated.
Not too difficult if you have a properly fitting suit.
