Great video! I recently set up a 20L bucket of oysters using these instructions and had pinning at every hole but then a lot stopped growing (aborted?) and started to brown/yellow. About 1/4 continued to fruit... Do you have thoughts on the main cause of aborts with this method? Drops in temp, humidity, overpinning, not enough oxygen... I can't seem to find answers on this... Love your thoughts!
Thanks for the video and clear instructions! Got a question if you don`t mind: How dangerous for room and personal health to grow mushrooms indoors for example in spare room which I am planning to use for cultivation gourmet mushrooms and exploring best options? Thank you!
I am planning on doing this soon and was wondering if can you use the spent substrate to inoculate a new bucket instead of having to keep buying grain spawn? It seems like this should be possible as long as the mycelium in the old substrate is still active. My plan is to harvest the mushrooms from the first bucket once or twice and use the substrate just like I would grain spawn for the next buckets.
@@johnhedge9328yes, you can. But you need to resterilize your substrate. Molds is always there, but undeveloped for some time. From Paul Stamets book: Species succession can be accomplished indoors. Here is one example. After Shiitake stops producing on logs or sawdust, the substrate can be broken apart, remoistened, resterilized, and reinoculated with another gourmet mushroom; in this case, I recommend Oyster mushrooms. Once the Oyster mushroom life cycle is completed, the substrate can be again sterilized, and inoculated with the next species. Shiitake, Oyster, King Stropharia, and finally Shaggy Manes can all be grown on the same substrate, increasingly reducing the substrate mass, without the addition of new materials. The majority of the substrate mass that does not evolve into gases, is regenerated into mushrooms. The conversion of substrate mass-to-mushroom mass is mind boggling. These concepts are further developed in Chapter 22.
Thank you. I'm interested to see what that spot looks like where you dump the spent substrate. Are there mushrooms growing there or is that the end of it? Can't you take like some of the spent stuff, add half of it to new fresh substrate and grow more?
We were using an open air compost heap... you can get mushrooms growing there but they tend to get eaten by animals and flies, and the stuff under the surface quickly gets colonised by other bacteria that break everything down, and also creates too much heat for the mushrooms to fruit...
Can you use that used straw (the one that has finished fruiting) to colonize new buckets? Thank you for the content! We are trying mushroom farming in a Ugandan school ☺️
My 5 gallon bucket has been fruiting very well for its first flush. Is it possible for me to “repackage” some of this into a smaller container for a gift then fill the gap in mine with more chips and get them to spawn in the new stuff?
Is it important to have holes? I will try to make one in a 4L transparent bucket. Can i just open the lid when it needs to fruit ?😁thank you. Hope you can answer.
Thank you for the video! To me it seams for a small hobby single household level, hardwood or straw pellets seam to be the most convenient substrate to get. But you mention issues with compaction and air exchange with fine materials. Do you think using smaller buckets would help with the air exchange? What would you say is the smallest reasonable bucket to grow oyster mushrooms?
It seems that the hot water way to sterilize the medium is kind of energy intensive, isn't it? Does the hydrated lime really work? If so I think it's better.
For small batched like this, hot water is much more accessible. We use hydrated lime on a commercial scale, and it works very well. For larger, commercial batches, it is less energy intensive, but for a small bucket grow, such as the one in this video, you just need to boil a large saucepan of water (maybe a couple of these) and that's probably a better approach when you then factor in fuel if you need to go fetch the lime, or product cost and delivery charges if you were to buy the lime. But we agree, on a large scale, that using hydrated lime is the better approach, but for one off home grows, hot water os the way to go... but great question, and thanks for watching!
Can I use coconut coir by soaking it to remove the tannin b4 sterilizing it with hot water? Also can I use store bought mushrooms, cutting it into smaller PCs & use it as spawn/seed😜
Hi grocycle I love your videos! I have a question, if I want to upscale my farm and produce 500kg per week, does this mean that this will take around 500 hours of labour?
Hi Benjamin - not at all - if you run it as a production line, or do batch production, you get economies of scale - so it's not a direct translation! The time involved to fruit that much depends on the space available, your processes, minimising losses through contamination and the like... how much do you currently farm? Might be worth you heading to our channel and looking up our free 1 hr workshop - link is in the description above (last link). Thanks for watching!
@@GroCycleTV thank you so much for replying! I will definitely check out your course. I actually haven't started mushroom farming just yet, but I'm hoping to start soon.
A lot of sites say they recommend 5 pounds of spawn per 5 gallon bucket, and wanted to know your thoughts on that? My first go at it, I used roughly 1 pound of spawn and I got a beautiful first flush, but things have seemed to slow down since then. Using 1 pound of spawn if far more cost effective, and I would like to continue using that ratio. Thank you!
Great content!! One quick question for the mushroom lover: I'm placing micropore tape on the holes, anyone knows if I need to manually remove them after full colinization, or the pins have enough strengh to remove it by itself?
IMO the benefit to doing the bucket method is that it's much lower waste, because the bucket is reusable and the bags are not, and the secondary is that over time, because you won't be purchasing the bags anymore, you save money. I like the bucket method because of this, though I have grown many in blocks as well. The ones I've grown in bags, if the blocks have had a few flushes I like to revitalize them by putting them in a bucket with either straw or chips, and they will recolonize and I get a decent yield from the "spent" blocks. 😊 I also reached out to one of my local businesses, and they gave me the buckets that bulk nut butter comes in, for free. I also combine that with colonizing grain in jars rather than grain bags, so that cost is nominal as well.
@@celticlass8573 thank you for the reply. Did you find any differences in the yield per space utilised when growing in buckets vs bags? I am considering the different methods, and lower costs and waste are definitely an advantage, I agree. I want to know the trade off. Why are bags still popular in this case? Yield must be different...
@@anirshadchowdhury9653 The yield is quite similar by volume of substrate. It shouldn't be any different, when you think about it, a block is a block, if all the prep is the same. As for why people still use bags to grow mushrooms, I believe it's because it's convenient, and they don't want to bother with washing the buckets. The buckets take up more space than bags do, but the buckets have the capacity of producing more than one mushroom at a time. Definitely experiment and see what works best for you. 😊
@GroCycleTV I have some blue Oyster and black Oyster sawdust spawn on route and will be attempting this method. I have a bale of steralised Rape straw which I am going to experiment with, having just watched your other video ( A Guide To Mushroom Substrates ) would you suggest adding any supplements in with it all when layering the straw with the sawdust spawn, or will there be sufficient amounts already in it?
Hi dear. I am using a bucket to grow oyster mushroom. After a month the bucket seems light. Do I soak again the straW? And how do I soak it with the bucket? Do I open the lid and put water in? Looking forward for you answer. Thanks
Have you been spraying it? If you spray with a spritzer or hose it should be able to take on enough water to keep it hydrated - also, keep in the shade, if it's in direct sunlight it may dry out too quickly and become light, and mushrooms will struggle to grow... hope that helps, of not, feel free to post another comment here!

We've found this size hole works well for us, if you put your hand behind and twist before pulling, hardly any substrate comes out - I think any bigger and it might be a problem... how was your crop? Good luck!!
@@GroCycleTV I assume you're usig straw then the hole size should be ok I'm using sawdust and straw like stuff because I get it for free (wheat hulls straw rests etc. ) because thats smaller it would break loose easier. At the moment I did just a test with cold pasteurization in bahs which worked pretty well but the strain of oyster that Icloned from the wild because it seemed so strong didn't fruit in all tries before (sterilized and other mediums). Now after 10 or so attempts I found how to make it fruit finally, but it grows strange as if it got way to high CO2. Looks more looks like a Trumpet than an oyster mushroom. Many stems wit just a tiny cap that is white in the middle.... Very strange.... And no its not because high CO2 I tried mor air exchange, different humidity and different temperature. Maybe my culture is just to old. Tried for 3 years to get it fruiting at all. Now I found the reason why it didn't fruit but now it doesn't grow as its supposed to do.... Will probably dismiss this strain even its growing exceptionally strong and quickly mycelium but getting it to fruit and then fruit correctly is pretty hard to do.

@@Gorkilein Thanks for the answer ;} Do you think you will continue to use cold pasteurization on sawdust? I'm thinking in using Wood chips. I'm also thinking in doing hot watter pasteurization for this substrate
Hi - it should be similar, yes, but the nutrients will tend to be used up faster and subsequent yields may be smaller, but work with the buckets that are a) available to you and b) fit in with your production process - just make sure that they are food grade plastic. Good luck!
Hi I’m new to this, so stupid question… Will clear buckets work just as well, or should they rather be opaque/white? Thank you for a wonderful informative video.
I think clear should work ... Especially if you're going to place it within a second bucket as some comments suggest. Many folks grow in clear plastic bags and it actually helps monitor the progress of the mycellium growth plus also helps spot any possible contaminant growth (black patches)
I am in a cold part of Australia where in winter temperature can drop to 4 degrees at night time and then up to 16 degrees during the day. Will these cold temperatures kill the mushrooms. I am interested in growing oyster and lion’s mane
You can get cold weather strains of oyster, particularly blue and brown winter oyster - lions mane are more picky with swings and extremes of temperature though... have you tried growing either one yet where you live?
*Hey I'll refer you to this dude online who guided me through my first ever experience,he got all kinds of psychedelic stuffs and he also ship discreetly to any location**
So at the end, you dumped the bucket into the compost pile. I'm wondering, if you broke up the old substrate into a new batch of chopped straw, would it come back to life?
They basically made a video doing experiments on this idea, "using mushroom substrate as spawn" ruclips.net/video/7ZFHpCnGdO0/видео.html. Basically he says you can reuse substrate like you suggest, but the yields vs your fresh substrate inputs get worse and the mycelium starts to get sick/lose energy, and you should at most reuse substrate like once, maybe twice. Its an interesting video.
You can, but each time you do this the mycelium becomes weaker, and will be slower to take hold and colonise... but yes, it is possible. Best thing to do is try it as an experiment, and if you're pleased with the results then try it again!
@@GroCycleTVthank you for the reply!! Im hoping to grow mushrooms for myself on the regular. Could catching their spores be doable? Do you need anything fancy to propagate them from spores?
Hi ! Thanks a lot for this video, this is really interesting and I really want to try it out ! I have some questions though : 1. What can you do with the spawn if you don't use it entirely ? do you store it in the fridge ? 2. Does this method work with any other type of mushroom ? Thanks !
1) yes, you can re-seal the spawn and store in the fridge for a couple of weeks, then clean bags well with alcohol before using 2) this method works best with Oysters, but we have seen some folks growing Shiitake like this and knocking the colonised substrate out of the bucket to fruit
Hi, loving the videos, I'm looking forward to trying this! I'm hoping to start growing my first oyster mushrooms this way very soon but I'm a little unsure of how much spawn I would need for this exact method (20 litre bucket). A lot of sources say I should use 1 - 2.3 kilograms of grain spawn per 20 litre bucket but often sellers will sell in much lower quantities (e.g. 50 g of Mushroom Spawn Seeds). Do you have any recommendations of where I can go to get the right amount? Cheers :)
Yes you can do this to create your substrate to grow in bags, but we wouldn't recommend using small particle size substrate like this in buckets as you tend to get issues with poor air exchange to the middle of the substrate
Can leaves work as substrate? I live in a temperate forest and that's what's around ... like could pasteurized / sterilized leaves be used for any species? Whether oyster or what... or nah?
Hey guys, what to do if got pinning on some of the bucket holes, but it jut stays the same, not growing any more, for last week? The bucket is half cofee grounds and half alfa-alfa straws.
*Hey I'll refer you to this dude online who guided me through my first ever experience,he got all kinds of psychedelic stuffs and he also ship discreetly to any location**
I haven't noticed in the videos that you talked about where you put the remaining "waste?" that remains after cultivation and collection? If you just can't dump it in your compost/backyard? I am interested in what will be done with it? If you start cultivation in bigger, this can come as a real surprise.
I also watch this Vidio and follow all the process and its explanation. Some of the explanation are really needed but not for the rest after all the mushroom stop producing . But. Maybe it can be use as partilizer
In my experience, if the volume of the bucket is the same as that of a bag, the amount of mushrooms is comparable. Of course it will depend on the mushroom, your climate etc.
@@celticlass8573 yes, if bag and bucket are comparable, the Fruiting on the side of the bucket, is this comparable Top Fruiting out the top/side of bag, is there a difference in the Clusters , if so , which ?... ?
@@wande.r I can't imagine there would be less, since the surface is more than the typical bag opening. I think I'd be careful to make sure that it doesn't get too dry.
@@GroCycleTV Thank you, yes I already watched that video and just watched it again....I must have missed it because video you are referencing shows 5 easy ways to cold water pasteurize. Hydrated Lime, Ash, Soap, Chlorine and Vinegar....no peroxide.
You can get three flushes from a bucket usually as long as mould doesn't set in - the mycelium does weaken after that too much to get many more fruits - but not unheard of for a fourth!
Aside from the pasteurisation moment, this method seems to have none of the focus on sterile handling that the other methods have. Letting the pasteurised back drip out outdoors, just hosing the bucket down with gardenhose water etc. Is it because oyster mushrooms are just tougher against contamination?
Really, yes! Oysters are some of the hardiest mushrooms against contaminants and we've tried growing them in this was many times with a good success rate - one reason we love to grow oysters in the Low Tech way!
Why doesn't any design a buck to grow mushrooms like the Japanese bottom style growing. If growers could reuse buckets instead of plastic bags it would be amazing
Don't you have contamination problems with this low time/temperature sterilisation/pasteurisation of the wheat straws? it's because you don't use any supplement? Did you stopped using coffee ground? thank you :)
Very low contamination rate growing like this. Oysters grow very happily on 100% straw substrate, which contains much higher Nitrogen and mineral levels than sawdust, meaning supplementation is not necessary to get good yields.

Great content!! One quick question for the mushroom lover: I'm placing micropore tape on the holes, anyone knows if I need to manually remove them after full colinization, or the pins have enough strengh to remove it by itself?
I'm in Thailand can I get them here or shipped here?
@Running Free please dont. Instagram and telegram are a scam for these types of things
Does anyone have an opinion or data on the yield of this method vs the yield of grow bags methods (either sawdust or sawdust+soy hulls)?
How much the result of total harvesting for each bucket from first fruiting to last ? Thank you
Do you rinse your bulk sub after lime baths? Or is it safe to add spawn directly after?
no need, oyster dont mind high ph
Wonderful show
Is this method appliable with softwood fuelpellets or poresize is a peoblem?

What mushroom does the spawn spawn and where do you get it? I need to know so that I can do this for science.
Would another type of mushroom work?
I did this similar with same size holes.
I would suggest smaller holes so the chance removing subszrate when harvesting is smaller
@@Gorkilein Did you used the cold pasteurization on sawdust substrat? Or was it straw?
@@ale.ktheo.g4394 Idid use a mixture of sawdust spelt and wheat-bran
But I was just testing the coldnpasterisation method
I had a bit mold in rhe tests bit it was overtaken by the oyster mycelium lateron.
Before I always used sterilized sawdust.
@@Gorkilein Thanks for the answer ;} Do you think you will continue to use cold pasteurization on sawdust? I'm thinking in using Wood chips. I'm also thinking in doing hot watter pasteurization for this substrate
What size poly tubes do you use for your straw logs? I purchased 8" and it's quite small. Thanks 🙏🙏
Can you use hay as a substrate? Thanks
I don't wanna buy any of that. Im just asking a simple question to grow oyster mushrooms.
If using the same quantities but spread in 4 smaller 5 litters buckets, will the total crop be the same as you get in one of 20 litters?many thanks
I am starting indoors so what can the low temperature outside be being it’s winter
Hi sir, I inoculated on saw dust.... Mycelium grown best... But it's been 40days...but no mushroom grown.. Plz suggest
😅
In the incubatoin stage, should we seal the holes with micropore?

So at the end, you dumped the bucket into the compost pile. I'm wondering, if you broke up the old substrate into a new batch of chopped straw, would it come back to life?
They basically made a video doing experiments on this idea, "using mushroom substrate as spawn" ruclips.net/video/7ZFHpCnGdO0/видео.html. Basically he says you can reuse substrate like you suggest, but the yields vs your fresh substrate inputs get worse and the mycelium starts to get sick/lose energy, and you should at most reuse substrate like once, maybe twice. Its an interesting video.
once the grow bucket stops fruiting, could you scatter the spent mycelium in a new bucket of substrate to start a new bucket?
@@GroCycleTV Thanks so much for the answer :)

Great sir, your lesson
Where do you get the mushroom spawn???
@Hope Beel Thank you❤
Hi, loving the videos, I'm looking forward to trying this! Cheers :)
Hello, can we chop straw into powder and use it instead of sawdust then sterilize it in a pressure cooker?
Yes you can do this to create your substrate to grow in bags, but we wouldn't recommend using small particle size substrate like this in buckets as you tend to get issues with poor air exchange to the middle of the substrate
Can it be done in a garage
Yes, just ensure there is some light and fresh air for the fruiting phase
Great videos! Thanks.
Can leaves work as substrate? I live in a temperate forest and that's what's around ... like could pasteurized / sterilized leaves be used for any species? Whether oyster or what... or nah?
great video very informative :)
Hey guys, what to do if got pinning on some of the bucket holes, but it jut stays the same, not growing any more, for last week? The bucket is half cofee grounds and half alfa-alfa straws.
Are you keeping the substrate hydrated? Lack of water will stop the growth, or of it's become too hot or cold, that can also have an affect...
I did cold pasterisation and i put staw into some transparent pvc bags, but now i see some seeds have sprout...What should i do?
Anyone got any tips where I can get straw without paying an arm and a leg? I live in a city.

Can you flush the bucket by rehydrating? If so, how?
Thanks!
What about using straw pellets?
When Fruiting in a bucket or a bag, which method produces the best clusters if the bag and/or bucket capacity is comparable?
In my experience, if the volume of the bucket is the same as that of a bag, the amount of mushrooms is comparable. Of course it will depend on the mushroom, your climate etc.
@@celticlass8573 yes, if bag and bucket are comparable, the Fruiting on the side of the bucket, is this comparable Top Fruiting out the top/side of bag, is there a difference in the Clusters , if so , which ?... ?
@@wande.r I can't imagine there would be less, since the surface is more than the typical bag opening. I think I'd be careful to make sure that it doesn't get too dry.

Is there any reason this wouldn't work with smaller buckets? I have A LOT of small buckets to use so would rather not buy any more
How we know if substrate get contaminated inside bucket?

Can you "reseed" the mushrooms?
Grocycle made a video where they talk about the question you're asking, I think: ruclips.net/video/7ZFHpCnGdO0/видео.html
Can you put it in a green house to not mist it everyday
how many time does a basket fruit
bucket*
You can get three flushes from a bucket usually as long as mould doesn't set in - the mycelium does weaken after that too much to get many more fruits - but not unheard of for a fourth!
Watching this video after I used wooded pellets... Waited about 3 weeks now and still not nearly colonized.
Maravilloso 😍😻❤️😻😻❤️
You should check out (Anthony_mycology), he delivers psychedelics and mushrooms
He is on Instagram
Don't you have contamination problems with this low time/temperature sterilisation/pasteurisation of the wheat straws? it's because you don't use any supplement? Did you stopped using coffee ground? thank you :)
Very low contamination rate growing like this. Oysters grow very happily on 100% straw substrate, which contains much higher Nitrogen and mineral levels than sawdust, meaning supplementation is not necessary to get good yields.
How can I get the seeds
I'm not able to get the free guide, it keeps loading but never really get to it, can anyone help me?
Psychedelics saved me from years of uncontrollable depression, anxiety and illicit pill addiction. Imagine carrying heavy chains for over a decade and then all of a sudden that burden is gone. Believe it or not in a couple years they'll be all over for treatment of mental health related issues.
Where to by mushrooms sesds
Google "mushroom spawn" or "mushroom grain spawn" and you will be able to find a supplier in your local area - hope that helps!
So. Ideally. Start a bucket once a month and you'll have mushrooms all the time.
