I said tofu is my favorite pizza topping ! I was just kidding and I don’t even like pizza cheese and soda . I came to Napa valley since 1984 and I should like those food . They are yummy 🤤 and I’m just very picky about eating!
I have been growing mushrooms outdoors using a five gallon bucket for couple of months. I reside in central Texas where the temperatures range from low to mid 70’s and night temperatures into the 40’s . Since blue oyster mushrooms enjoy the cooler weather, I just leave it on my front porch, where it does not get direct sun , it has been doing great. I got two flushes of mushroom then I just took the material from the bucket and added more straw and divided into two buckets. I just left them in the same area. After two weeks, both buckets were colonized and I am getting fruiting from both buckets again.
How do you keep the humidity high during fruiting stage? I hear it should be around 90% and I find that hard to achieve outside or without a humidifier?
When my pot of Oyster mushrooms expired, I placed the pot on top of a very large log (in this case, Holly) and planted some little bedding plant in the top of the pot (since I thought the mycelium had run dry by then). Anyway, there must have been active mycelium there still, this travelling down out of the pot and into the log below - which continued to sprout Oyster mushrooms for 4-5 years afterwards.
I really appreciate you sharing that . That’s what is so interesting about mushrooms is it seems like they can have an exponential yield if you use the right techniques
This can be simplified even more. You just need 3 things: straw, culture and a plastic bag. In fact you do not need the disinfection if you just stay domestic level clean. The straw is not sterilised either. You can just put the straw in a large container (a bathtube or a large pot for example) and pour boiling water on it to cover it completely. A plastic bag can be used instead of bucket. Just let the soaked straw cool down to room temperature, pour the water away (might want to use it for flowers for example) and stuff the soft straw inside the bag. Add the culture or the pieces of previous mycelium from older culture you have. Close the bag and put it in a cellar. You might want to cut off the bottom corners of the bag to let the excess water out. After 2-3 weeks the whole straw in the bag should be compact white block. Now it needs some oxygen. You can either take it out from the bag, roll the bag down, if the environment is moist enough, or just cut holes in the bag to let the oxygen in and preserve some more moisture inside. Just protect it from the flies and bugs that might want to come to it and lay their eggs in the mushrooms that will start growing. Or from the mice, if you keep it in the cellar. Usually moving to some light (but not direct sun) gives healthier and nicer mushrooms.
If you know anyone who works in a commercial kitchen, you can probably get food grade buckets for free. I use them for wine and vinegar making and in the garden. Can't wait to try mushrooms.
That is the best tutorial for growing I have seen in years. You have a very concise, gentle manner of instruction . thank you. I love mushrooms even more now.
This is an awesome video. I have wanted to start growing my own mushrooms but most of the videos I've watched were a bit intimidating. Your process is very simple and "crash test dummy" user friendly 😄. Thank you for sharing this video. I am definitely going to try your process 👍🏾
Considering to get into mushroom growing. Watching lots of videos. Thanks for explaining the difference between sterilisation and pasteurization. Wow. Done so simple outdoors. I paid keen attention to the temperature that you heated the water to. All the best from Jamaica.
It helps to roll up a towel and kinda bash the jar to break it up especially if you are doing grain to grain. Also there is no need to make those fancy lids, just use the ring and a piece of tyvek in place of the flat part of the lid, like just toss that part off to the side. It has great gas exchange and its cheap and easy.
Thank you to you and your wife for your videos! Your calm, knowledgeable attitude is appreciated. My family is about to begin our mushroom adventure with three types of oyster mushrooms
It's pretty impossible using this method in the SW as the air is just too dry. I had success putting my bucket in larger container and putting a layer of water in the bottom for moisture.
Thanks for the great video! Do you have to do anything special to the bucket to get a second fruiting, or do you just keep it in the same conditions in the green house?
Hello! I am a wannabe mushroom grower, I haven't yet taken the leap... :) I have watched many videos and tutorials, all a little bit different from each other and I think yours are great. I cant wait to see the next one. My question though is, there are no videos about Cremini Mushrooms, are they impossible to grow?
Thank you! It was "grain spawn". Rye berry grain that had been inoculated with liquid mushroom culture allowing for the formation of "mycelium". The mycelium is the white mass that was surrounding the grain in the jars.
Thank you for your video. I am planning make 20-50 basket in a green house. Even Now is little too late on February. CanI ask you Where did you buy those plastic sheet you put on the floor of green house ?
You can do a quick RUclips search for a video titled, " How To Install Landscape Fabric And Have A Weed Free Garden '. In that video I share with you what I used for the install. You can look in the description box of that video for the exact product I used. Cheers!
what did your wife make with the goji berry leaves. I don't know much about the plant but I'm going to buy one. How well does it do in zone 6? Do I have to have them in a pot?
I'm just dipping my toes into growing mushrooms.. how long does this grow mushrooms for? Will this only work short term or should I use something else? I want to start several.. maybe some short term and others long term.
A couple months of growth and/or two, possibly three flushes of mushrooms. You can also take the "spent mushroom compost" and add it to the garden to help build the soil and perhaps get another flush. Add some hardwood chips or straw to the area first to increase your chances of success. Cheers!
Hi Dan, very inspiring work. Slightly different topic, what is the size of your growing area? (If you don't mind sharing. trying to understand how much backyard space is good to have)
Asking question before finishing the video, I will edit and add my own answer if it's answered in the video. But I'm wondering how much in weight can you harvest from a 5 gal bucket.
Nice! Bacteria, fungus, and viruses are everywhere and part of life. When inoculating a substrate with spawn, pasteurization is utilized to reduce competitors and hopefully avoid contamination as to increase success rate and harvest an abundance of healthy mushrooms. In nature the mycelium runs about the landscape fruiting in optimal environments conducive to it's habitat. Two different scenarios.
Next time put the straw in a laundry bag or pillow case so it's more contained. You can use the bags to wring excess water out. Cold lime baths work pretty well for straw as long as you use oyster mushrooms which can typically outpace most strains of molds.
I got distracted by my phone for a minute and forgot what I was watching. I looked up just in time to see a bunch of straw getting stuffed into a pot. Is he cooking straw???
Thanks for the great video. Haha. I started my bucket a month ago and it's not doing that well.. I'm using paper trying to grow oyster mushrooms. I notice u put a lot of spawn.. Is that a requirement? I didn't put as much.. Haha
What's your favorite pizza toppings?
Mushrooms 😁 And most other toppings including pineapple lol
Tofu ! 😆

Black olives, wish I could grow them, but Mushrooms are awesome too!
Spinach and kale are close seconds, and I do use those from my garden :o)

@@goldenmare2594 Yes, they were an issue in my mushroom culture.

Im new in gardening but mushroom video its intersting
Valuable, concise tutorial. Much appreciated. I will be inoculating logs this spring for the first time, but will also be trying out this method.
You two are just so lovely and fun to watch every time ❤️
Thank you! We appreciate your kind words. Cheers!
Totally trying this thank you for your info
I've been thinking about growing mushrooms this year. I've never done it before but I want to try
Thanks for sharing
The lazy man in me says just buy some shrooms, but the gardener in me says I have to try this.

Thank you very much for the info.Merry Christmas from Trinidad and Tobago
You can also use the young leaves of the mulberry for tinola.
Thank you for sharing! I will now do some research. Cheers!

Can any kind of straw be used, i.e. tractor supply bags? In this heat wave, don't think I could grow anything. Outstanding video:)
What would you say the average yield is for a 5 gallon oyster bucket, all flushes combined?
what kind of cloth do you use with the iso?
Where do you buy the spawn
you could use that straw juice as grass fertilizer
Can you grow other types of mushrooms using the same method?
If you shake&break the jar up it makes filling the buckets hell of ah lot quicker
Would have been nice to see the growth stages up to and including the harvest.
Stay tuned!
That pot u cooking with--- have you canned your food using it? Do u can foods using mason/ glass jars??
How much straw would be required?
I've seen people drill 1/2 in to 1 in holes. Is 1/4 in the best size holes?

was this successful? Did it fruit?
Can you please do another video with the mushrooms grown?
My dad and I used to go mushroom hunting. We didn’t wonder about good n bad bacteria’s out in the wild n never got sick.

Roughly how many lbs does this produce per bucket?
How do you get rid of the grass in between all of your beds, I spend more time weed eating in between my beds than anything else.
I think 3 jars of spawn per 1 backet of straw is quite overkill. 1 jar probably would be enough, it may take longer to colonize but will save money.

There seems to be a lot of spawn in one bucket! I was looking forward to the result! Boo hoo! Oh, next part!
mossy oak will never forgive you
4 Quart Jars per bucket? Seems like you could get away with 2 maybe?
I would put micropore tape over the holes.
Where's the mushrooms
