Wouldn't it be wiser to remove the top. Extend it and use some old boards around the new frame to make it look similar and fix the old top on it? It woold look as it was made that way. And you could store as you said blankets and such in closed space?
You could use an old broom handle to make a hanging rail on the left side of the cupboard. Going left to right so you can use hangers. You can use old pallet boards to cover the outside of the bottom you made. Then you could use furniture polish on it to make it all look like one cupboard
I would have just put cabinet with doors on the top instead of the bottom that way you can still reach the coat rack and have storage for blankets on top
In the antique trade, we sometimes use diluted tea to get a match for an existing colour. Soaks in well and can be over oiled, when dry.. Much better now and looks more in proportion. David can have the top shelves ! ! Another job well done !
Don’t worry! Get your drawers in and see how it looks. It will come together with paint or stain, AND matching hardware. It may also need a little trim on both pieces to make it look like one unit. Love the way you both tackle your projects. You bring me such joy! ❤️
Don't worry about the closet being tall it helps make the room look taller. Once your finished it will look great. I would adjust the shelves in the closet more evenly to give it more useful function. I also suggest you take craft paint and paint the white concrete grout on the brick wall in your main bedroom to blend it in with the rest of the concrete grout. It will look so much better.
Wonderful job! As someone with bad knees, thank you for raising it up and not just adding a box on top. I'm sure Des's Mom will greatly appreciate it, too.
I am sure that once it is finished it will look as you want it to. You are recycling wood and making something yourselves. Good for the environment and saving yourselves a lot of money. Be proud of yourselves you really deserve it .
I love the extension It's going to add lots of storage space and u can always match colors with stain or oil. Haven't seen the end product, I am sure David has a plan or design that makes the ends of the extension left and right flush with old cupboard❤. Desi im sure u will love the end product. Take care
i just love that old cupboard. i have an armoire that looks just like it with long doors on the front. i think it's the perfect height at about 200 cm. i will look forward to see how it turns out
Once the bottom that David built is completed, I think you're going to love it. You'll have more storage for sure. If you decide you don't like it, maybe just make that whole wall one big closet lined out with 2x4s (kind of like your pantry shelves) and then make doors to hide it all.
So far so good on that beautiful old wardrobe! I'm wondering, have you thought about anchoring it to the wall behind it, or maybe from the back with a metal strap screwed to the wardrobe and screwed up into a ceiling beam? Any large dresser or closet like that can tip over forward and crush someone if they happen to pull on any of the front or climb to reach a higher place. And since the new drawers area is narrower than the closet, it could be a very dangerous risk that could be fixed very easily! We anchor ALL of our free-standing closets, cupboards, book shelves, etc. If you ever have children in your home, they can be little climbing monkeys! Some have had tragic results of such climbing! Anyway, great job on being creative and using what you have to make what you need!
You have a good idea. I think that if you design to the left of the closet to maximize the use of the wall you could achieve a wall unit integrating the closet you have. It’s a beautiful piece just enhance it.
Ok my husband and I thought this out for you One of the four 2 by 4 goes under and reattach the wheels to that. Remove the crown molding and put the other 4 2by4’s with the four uprights. Make a door and add the crown molding to the top. I also say stain it.
Love your channel. I think it might have looked better if the drawer unit had been make the same width as the closet so that it did not look so top heavy? If you put the closet on legs you could have 2 baskets for blanket storage underneath. ❤
I like the idea, but I'm surprised you didn't make the bottom addition as wide as the top part. Visually it looks like the top part is on stilts whereas if the bottom part was as wide as the top part, it would like one unit. It might be a little high, but no big deal. And you're right Deivid you can use a step ladder for the top shelves.
I would make the base wide enough for the slides you have to work and shorten it some. You would still have enough space for a drawer. This would bring the closet down enough so that you could put baskets on top for extra storage.
On the top shelf you can always get some wicker baskets and put seasonal clothing or shoes and just move the season you are currently in and move to lower level in closet the just move the baskets instead of the same thing in that all the time. It would be very functional.
Personally, I think it’s going to look beautiful. Right now it looks top-heavy, but if you beef up the bottom sides with thick wood panels, it’ll help balance the top and bottom. The drawers are also going to help a lot and a little light stain will help the color. Also Devid, please make two step stairs for Dessy and store it next to the wardrobe. Put heavy felt on the bottom so it doesn’t scratch the floors.
You are making an overly short closet more useful by adding the drawers at the bottom. I am guessing the bottom will look wider once the wood is added to the sides. I think it will look good after it is completed. Some people are saying it needs to be anchored to the wall, but I don't see why it would be necessary. It almost touches the ceiling so it doesn't seem possible for it to tip forward. The top shelf can be used to hold things that are not used often, like seasonal items. You would just need a small step stool or a chair to access it once in a while. Or Deivid can get the items down. Someone also suggested a basket (or a box) for that to shelf with a strap handle to pull it out. That can work too. Keep up the good work. I look forward to your next video.
I understand where you are going with this idea, but I think the better option might have been to add legs about half the height of the bottom that Devid built. Look for old furniture that already has the legs turned and ready to use, scrounge around and see what you can find. You might even get some legs for free if you know where to look. Then, add storage baskets on the top to hide the blankets out of sight. Just another solution.
I Love that closet! It is Beautiful! I noticed the rack fir clothes has hooks ..wonder if those could be removed to use hangers ti hang clothes on? Looks like you are making good use of it and adding drawers below is Genious!❤
You could also flip the bottom piece and have one single deep drawer, which would be good for blankets, and cover the gap between the base and cabinet with a piece of old timber. This would lower the cabinet to a more acceptable height.
Well done in the first stage. I’m a little concerned that its centre of gravity is a bit high. Be careful when loading heavy things in the top portions and more particularly when extracting items from the top portions. I believe that you are going to reinstall the doors. Be careful that when both doors perhaps even one are open it pushes a certain amount of weight above the centre of gravity away from the back wall and this could cause it to Top forwards. Just an idea, but to perhaps make it more stable attach a false front to the storage area at the bottom that you have just made and this could serve two purposes. Number one it will help lower the centre of gravity. Number two if the top to the false front of the drawer or other storage box is big enough say 30 cm it could become a bench seat and or perhaps a step so that Desi who is a little bit shorter than David can reach the items at the top shelves. Another aspect I have thought of is that you have a clothes hanging rail towards the top of the big storage space of the original wardrobe or closet. With all the clothes and dresses that Desi probably wants to store there it will add to the Top heaviness. You are quite right in that the existing closet at about 1.9 m high resulted in approximately 50 cm or more of wasted space above it.
What I think would look best is lower the bottom piece a bit and have 1 drawer on bottom, then make a box to sit on top and put a hinged door... hinge on top, and the door just lifts up.
I think it will look great when it's done. Having spaces for things to be stored that aren't out in the open getting dusty and dirty is way better so I'm sure that closet will be a huge improvement both to the look of the room and for storage.
The idea is good, but I think it's impractical as you cannot access the top. A better idea might be to make a narrow shelf on the side instead and then add baskets on the top of the closet instead.
I would make the bottom addition shorter ( one large, deep drawer or two side by side ) and exact width and length of existing cabinet (finished). But that’s just my opinion.
Just rebuilt the whole thing, use it somewhere else. Plus if you do use it make sure it attached to the back wall. It could fall forwards and hurt someone.
Can you PLEASE make some steps for ur very old dogie. She deserves some help in her old age to be able to go up & down the steps on her own. I too have a very old dog that we have made him a ramp to be able to get up to my bed. He didn’t like the ramp at first but we must make them use what is best for their old arthritic legs. You have wood, you have rocks and you have the talent please please make it better for her now. You have proved your kindness by rescuing her and giving her a much better life then she had. So I know you will make something to get up into the house that is good for all!
It will look a little odd at this stage since you have added the base structure but not yet given that new base a purpose. Fit the drawers and tint the wood to match the top and then decide on your viewpoint. Blankets are normally heavy, so using the new base drawers for them would make sense, winter coats and other bulky heavy things could go there. However the design of the front and sides will make a huge difference to the appearance of the item.
I am concerned that you have not (at least on camera) attached the closet/cabinet to the ceiling or the wall somehow to prevent tip over. Please do that. Thank you.
Great idea to extend the height of the cabinet. Perhaps Devid can use the top shelves and Dessy the bottom? Devid, if you enclose both sides, the back, and the bottom with plywood, you could use it to store blankets. A second option would be to do the same, but make it a doggy snug.
It looks great use a stool at least the whole area will be used! And I agree with another viewer make some steps for Kadia (dog) so she doesn’t have difficulty to get where she needs too.
When the bottom is completed, it will be fine. You also have the option of making the bottom noticably larger around the front and sides as though it's a base.
ah, quick = utilitarian, never pretty. put some work time = astounded guests. there is always catch between the two. Your decision. i just realized maybe time for Devid to practice routering decoration for drawer front (in spring)?. :)
Not 100% sold on the fact that the base is smaller (it’s not historically accurate) but if you guys want it to look more cohesive, there are these vintage sorta Victorian drawer handles (made of porcelain and metal) that you can usually find at most hardware stores. If you put two of them per drawer and create a base similar to the top (with some scrap wood) Imo you’re not going to hate it anymore😊
I love it! I know people are complaining about it looking top heavy, and I’d agree if it was finished. It’s not finished so have patience. I’m pretty sure they’re going to use thick wood on the sides and that will make a solid base.
Those old closets used to have a bigger bottom. You managed to make a smaller bottom. That’s why you think it looks strange 😊 Add on the sides or redo 🙂 Also, instead of making two wide drawers you could make four narrower 😊
I think once Devids gets the bottom drawers put in and closes in the sides it will be great. I love that old piece and with it being solid wood it is awesome but I understand the need for extra storage. As I said when Devids finishes it, it will come together. The question would be to stain it or to paint it, stain would make it rustic but a white paint would brighten the room . I can't wait to see what you both agree on. See you next time.
Wouldn't it be wiser to remove the top. Extend it and use some old boards around the new frame to make it look similar and fix the old top on it? It woold look as it was made that way. And you could store as you said blankets and such in closed space?

What your eye is searching for is for the base to be wider. Also a clear transition between the pieces. It’s fine just needs some illusion.
If you don't have wood panels for doors, you could make frames for doors and use fabric gathered to cover the open space of the frame.
I hope you screw the top half to the wall, so it doesn't fall over, it looks a bit top heaven 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Wonderful job! As someone with bad knees, thank you for raising it up and not just adding a box on top. I'm sure Des's Mom will greatly appreciate it, too.

Trust the process. Add the drawers and wrap the whole bottom in old wood. It will look great. David can put his stuff on the high shelf.
David will make it look great! He always does!

Well, it will give you more storage space 🥰

You can make a storage box that acts like a step for in front of it that can hold shoes and such 😊
Yo le haría unas puertas que solo fuera el Marco y una visillo cogida en la parte superior e inferior , quitas el ruido visual
Love the idea I hope it works as you wish, the only thing I see is no wood glue.
As you said trust the vision. It's going to give you two very nice drawers to work with.

Yep, definitely enjoyed this video. 👍🏻❤️😁
I think it’s perfect! 🥰🇨🇦
Why is the frame not the same size as the cupboard? Width
I'm sure it would look OK it fitted the same
תודה❤❤❤
Dear Sweet Couple, maybe you should make the sides of the bottom meet the sides top. It will make it look even more nice.
Was there a reason for making the bottom narrower than the top? Maybe I missed something.
I'm going to trust the process.❤
Well done in the first stage.

Can cedar lining be used in the bottom drawer/drawers? That would make great linen and blanket storage.
Maybe build a new closet. And use this one somewhere else, because it's a beautiful old closet.
Yeah, enhanced with old school wood it will turn amazing. Just work on the tint. Good work as always.
It's going to be fine!
Sending love to you From South Carolina From the USA 🇺🇸 ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

maybe extend the cupboard to the side with shelves. No drawers underneath. And put nice legs on the cabinet. I think it would fit the cabinet better😊

:)
Put another hanging pole half way down for blouses and skirts
Dessy, you can put something in a basket with a handle on the top shelf. Then you can pull it out using that handle. Easy-peasy!
How about a big deep drawer on the bottom ? ❤❤

love that you are using that lovely old closet....just remove the top shelf and you will be able to reach the stuff on the now "top shelf"
I love it! I know people are complaining about it looking top heavy, and I’d agree if it was finished. It’s not finished so have patience. I’m pretty sure they’re going to use thick wood on the sides and that will make a solid base.
12:40 - Yes, back in the day people only had a few handmade cloths, and not all the dozens of outfits we seem to need, these days.
Those old closets used to have a bigger bottom. You managed to make a smaller bottom. That’s why you think it looks strange 😊 Add on the sides or redo 🙂
Also, instead of making two wide drawers you could make four narrower 😊
bottom piece would look better if extended
I think it will lock great as usal
Des - relax! It looks like a closet which is what you were looking for!
Build it surround… , added left n right.then paint a complimentary color
If you want to take the bottoms back out, you might try lifting them out with a strong vacuum cleaner.
I am sure that you will find a good solution and both will be happy.😏
Absolutely love it❣️❣️❣️❣️
I think when it is finished it will look grand! Put David's stuff on the top shelf.
Brilliant idea looking brilliant well done ❤

I think it looks good ways need somewhere to put things
Put the bottom part on top and make it as big as the rest of the closet
❤😊
😂ALWAYS GOOD JOB 🎉PERFECTE
a small fold out step??
I think it will look fantastic when it is finished!😊
small step ladder
This project is a great idea. It looks great. I am always impressed with all you do.
Just put rod instead hooks, you can put more clothes
Hiiiiiiii 💖💖💖
