- So today I took a visit to Wales to photograph the red kites at the Gigrin feeding Centre, which is a family run sheep farm overlooking the Elim Valleys of Wales.
Became an official red kite feeding centre in 1993 following a request from the RSPB who had seen the late Mr Powell feeding the red kites of which there were around 6 pairs on the farm and adjacent Hills. Buy 2000 and 6/400 red kites for coming into the farm for food, during the winter months, and is now a well-known Centre around the world.
The Green centre is now also a red kite rehabilitation centre in conjunction with the Welsh kite Trust.
So I spent around 3 hours here at the Green centre photographing the red kites as they swept down and took the food off the ground and flew around overhead, throughout the video you will see video footage of the red kites flying and coming in for their food also some wonderful images that I've managed to capture of the Red Kites flying.
What a fabulous day here at the Gigrin centre, photographing these magnificent Birds, paying for a hide there is very much worth it, and paying for a hired will help in supporting the centre and I work they do in protecting and increasing the Red Kite numbers.

Farmers shovel was Red - great video and looks an amazing place
Great video, I do love the way Red Kites feed, oh and the shovel was red. Thanks
I'm so lucky I only have to open my back door to hear and see somex😊
Loved the images, looks like a great place to go. Farmer's shovel was red.
Hello, I have seen red kites up close at our caravan in aberystwyth (Mid Wales) I used to throw scraps out for it and it used to sweep down right beside us and fly off with them. However, I live I the North west of England, and I was having a pint of guines in the beer garden in my local, and what flew over the top of us? A red kite! Everyone looked up and asked, "What is it?" I knew straight away with its obvious kite shaped tail, what it was. Nobody seemed to know! It hung around above us for a while, and two crows started to chase it away. But at least they are slowly branching out up and down the country.
Wow simply wow
Great video again! The shovel was red 👍🏻
The shovel was red. Great video again.
Fastest 20mins video, couldn't believe it went so quick. Stunning images at the end. Farmers shovel was RED.
Great video really enjoyed it. I believe the farmers shovel was red!
The wife & I just spent 2 weeks in Rhayader in May 2023 , went to Gigrin had a great time but there is another Redkite feeding station called Nant yr Arian towards Aberystwyth.
Superb crisp images sharp on the eyes

Hi, and many thanks for the comments Stefan, 👍😁
I’ve got a few days off work, so this is definitely on my To Do list and go visit.😊
Cheers
Always plan to visit only an hour away Red shovel 👍
Great vlog, the shovel was red
Awesome video and images. I am booked for a visit mid-September, from Vancouver Island. Looking forward to it now more than ever.
Yeh you will not be disappointed, just make sure you have plenty of memory cards lol I took over 5000 images 😲 lol
Gigrin is a great place, for me though it is a 6hour drive and that is with the traffic being kind. Lovely photography too!
yeh, it is a fair way to travel for most, but man what a great experience. Thanks for the comments, perhaps one day you will get over there. 👍
@@WildlifePhotographerUK I am sure I will.
Red shovel same colour as the kites, no strings attached. I love it there, a trip around Elan valley and the Dams in the morning then Gigrin after lunch.
What a place to visit will definitely go probably stay there for 2-3 days the shovel was red
Excellent video and some awesome shots, thanks for sharing .. and the shovel was red atvb Ian
Good stuff loving the closeness to these magnificent birds. Red shovel was cool too 😂
Red Shovel 🎉
Hello again! Great vid! Awesome and razor sharp pictures of red kites in flight! This place is really interesting. I don't have access to such facilities near my location. And yes, my batteries die like that pretty often, but I always have 2 or 3 spare ones with me. Remembering to charge all the batteries is one of the things I don't like while photographing or filming, but the rest is sheer joy! Have a nice weekend!
Good informative video. Nice to see a brave Buzzard in amongst them too !
Amazing video, and Amazing birds, The shovel was red
Super video Ashley really enjoyed it and good to realise that I’m not alone in forgetting batteries and so cards etc! By the way the farmers shovel was red.😊
One word AWESOME. By the way, the farmers shovel was Red
☺️
Great video, i would love to win a pass, and attempt to take some good photos. Thank you for sharing, farmer's shovel was red, but I guess I'm too late.
Great video. I particularly liked how you tracked one red kite for quite some time, and love the photo of the buzzard and kite too. Hope to go there one day!
Another great video Ashley, we were at Gigrin last year, some amazing video and photos from our visit like yours. I also got pictures of a loan Buzzard, he must be a regular, also the same lot of crows on every fence post 😃 it is a bit of a trek for us from the NW, but well worth it ....Red shovel BTW
Great video very enjoyable 😀I have been here a few times myself and have paid to use the specialist hides and yes you do need plenty of memory cards.
There is another feeding station in the Brecon Beacons at a place called Llandeusant a few miles outside of Llandovery. It is a lot smaller but in my own opinion is better for photography if you are ever down in the area I highly recommend a visit 😀
Beautiful birds! Great video📸
I've not visited Gigrin Farm as yet, but am planning on doing later this year. I've been to the Llanddeusant Fedding Station a couple of times now on the edge of the Brecon Beacons, and come away with great photos each time. My plan is to have a weekend in Wales and visit both Llanddeusant and Gigrin. Great photos and video, and the shovel is RED.
it seems they are half way in between social and solitary animals they are actually more often found flying alone instead of in flocks
great stuff, I am jealous! What kit were you using (Canon of some sort?), Thanks. Scott. PS Red shovel, but I live in Oz.

Apologies - I am a complete muppet. I only realised the video was a year old after submitting my entry (doh!!). Was there in the Tower Hide on Tuesday - what an experience!! Got some great shots but slightly marred by a huge cloud of midges that I realised (when I got the images onto the computer) I had been shooting through. Took a lot of work in PS to remove the small white specs. Love your vids keep em coming!
I only have a 70-200 f2.8 and 600 f4. will the 600mm be too long for Gigrin farm?
yeh 600mm might be a bit too much but the 70-200 should be fine, they do fly very close to the hides 👍enjoy
Looks like a great spot. Is there any reason that visiting in July would be less than ideal?
Hi John you can see the Red Kites any time of the year, however I would expect it to be a little quieter than normal in the middle of July as there will be plenty of food around in the hills and Valleys for the red kites to feed on, our expect you will still see a good hundred or so.
@@WildlifePhotographerUK Thanks for the reply.
