Jim Carrey’s 1994 may be the greatest year any comedic actor has ever had. Ace Ventura, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber. He went from being a relative unknown to the biggest movie star in the world in one year. As a little kid at the time, he was my first favorite actor.

Fun fact, when they made the ridiculously oversized dentures for the Mask character, the never expected Jim Carrey to actually be able to talk with them in. They had just planned for him to mouth his lines and dub the voice in later. But Jim Carrey took a set home with him and practiced talking with them in until he didn't need to be dubbed in later. Now that's what you call being devoted to your craft.

The specific power type is known as Toon Force, it's the same ability that gives Bugs Bunny all his wacky abilities, however the mask is slightly different, when he uses Toon Force on someone they don't react like a cartoon, they react like a normal human being would to for example getting hit in the face by a frying pan, if Bugs Bunny does it the other character just turns into a pancake for a moment, but if the mask were to do it... Well it'd still be a pancake... But their face wouldn't just pop back out... They would just be laying there with a flattened face, skull, and brain.

For those who didn’t catch it, the mask enhances a personality, and makes it revealed on the outside. Stanley was a love sick wildman of a fan of loony tunes for the mask made him when he was but MORE.

  • @wolfj0095
    @wolfj0095 Год назад +100

The Masks power is pretty unique, as far as powers are concerned. It normally goes by ‘Toonforce’, which grants the user the ability to warp reality and physics to an obscene level. The scale at which they can manipulate reality varies but it’s usually contained to their general surroundings but the magnitude and devastation of their power can be inconsistent sometimes.
The Mask brings out the users inner desires/darkness and allows them to bend reality as they see fit, but the Masks mischievous nature keeps them from becoming a full-fledged superhero.

The list goes on. An it can also effect people around them of their choosing. It also diminishes the wearers mental state driving them psychotic. The comics are much more darker, violent, & gory. 12:00 In the comic book, Stanley removed their skulls and replaced them with the mufflers.
The comic took-place in a more gritty and realistic world and was much, much darker: Stanley goes back to a mean gradeschool teacher and kills her in front of her students. Much, much darker.
In that story Stanley Ipkiss is a psycho and he gets killed because of his cruel behavior, and the Mask winds-up in possession of Kellaway who becomes a superhero and uses it to take-out the crime syndicate in town but the power leads him to attack the police chief and almost kill his partner, who is a much more fleshed-out and human character; and Kellaway ends up burying the mask in his basement under a lot of concrete.
The Mask begs to be worn and it gives those who wear it godlike powers, and that kind of power should tend to drive people insane, like Kurtz in *Apocalypse Now.*
Most people experience it in a cartoon-like way of being because that's generally what it is like and the closest association people who are aware of cartoons can readily assume and be with it on will be to behave like they are in a cartoon.

I can't even describe how much of an all-time favorite iconic classic this is. This movie was my entire childhood. I was literally saying most of the lines before it happened, and reminiscing on scenes that weren't included in this reaction. Like the scene where he was in the alleyway (as The Mask) with that moronic biker gang. Lol He dressed as a Carnival Guy and blew up some balloons for them, even pulling out one of them that turned out to be NOT a balloon.....(if you know, you know), and then finally blowing up a black tinted balloon which turned into a tommy gun! And then when the biker gang all ran away, Mask said something like: _"This is incredible... With these powers, I could be. . . A SUPERHERO!"_
Which answers Asia & BJ's earlier question of if he has powers or not.
It's shocking to me that they're just now getting around to seeing this absolute GEM of a movie, that I watched since childhood. It makes me wonder if you guys have never seen his other iconic classics, Like Ace Ventura or Dumb & Dumber? 🤔
The levels of pure nostalgia and fond memories I got from watching this movie is out of this world! It's huge hits like this is why Jim is a LEGEND! 🔥🐐🔥
Actually another fun fact is that he's similar to a cartoon character for a very good reason... The Mask is originated from its own comic books! The comic version has been watered down a bit by the film iteration of the character, because the comic character was actually just as ruthless and cold blooded as Dorian as the Mask... Lol
2 more fun facts: 1) There's technically a sequel to this movie called "Son of the Mask", but it's an absolute ass of a movie. It has a completely different set of actors *(so there's no Jim Carrey),* and it is NOTHING like the first movie. You likely won't like it nearly as much, but it is something to get a few cheap laughs in and if you want to kill some time. Lol
And 2) there's a very interesting YT channel called "Death Battle" where research and analysis is done on various different characters from comic books to popular tv shows and movies, and they put 2 different popular characters together in a fight to the DEATH, to see who would win in a fight.
Some time ago, they made a *Deadpool vs The Mask* Death Battle! They also touch base on many facts about the original comic version of the Mask as well, and the animated fight itself is absolutely hilarious and brilliant. I highly recommend that y'all check it out. You would really like Death Battle if you haven't already heard of it! From serious battles, such as *Goku vs Superman;* Funny/Goofy/Silly battles such as *Kirby vs Majin Buu, Deadpool vs The Mask, or The Kool-Aid Man vs Macho Man Randy Savage;* horror themed battles such as *Michael Myers vs Jason Voorhees;* or even outright ridiculous/insane battles such as *Saitama (One Punch Man) vs Popeye the Sailor Man!*
Death Battle has it ALL! Would love to see your reactions to some of them! 😃👍🔥

Ironically in the cartoon series, based on the movie, Peggy the redheaded reporter actually became the female protagonist. Yep there was a cartoon that ran for 3 seasons & it was really good. The movie is actually based on a comicbook series, which was actually more darker, multiple people wore the mask & when you wore it you became a psychotic killer, & The Mask was known in the comics as The Big Head Killer.

Jerry and Jim, and even Dick Van Dyke (DVD)were all hilarious, and all had the reputation of having "rubber faces" and bodies to match, which is a huge part of why they were so famous and successful. However, out of all 3, I really liked DVD because he was also a very great, smart, funny and LIMBER ( i.e. rubbery) dancer too.

Frasier(Cheers spinoff), Wishbone(kid show on PBS) and Milo being the best character in this movie second to Richard Jeni(RIP, Stanley's coworker at the bank. Very underated comedian and died too early), Milo was the bestest little guy he could be. Great movie, great reaction. 😎❤️ I was lucky enough to have a JRT growing up in the 90s. She was a great dog. GREAT reaction video, guys!
...the bridge they're standing on at the film's end (where Tina chucks the mask into the river) is the (old) Sixth Street Bridge - an iconic, real-life bridge in L.A. I'm glad it made it into this movie. The bridge was torn down about 4-5 years ago (rotting from the inside, couldn't be saved), but it's been replaced with the NEW Sixth Street Bridge - ten double-rows of concrete arches, across the L.A. river & a lot of other stuff. (You may have seen news reports of it opening to traffic, which it did a few months back). ...The old sixth street bridge has appeared in other films besides THE MASK, but THE MASK is certainly the, or one of the most prominent films to feature it.
...Don't give BJ too much grief for falling for Tina/Cameron Diaz in this film - not only beautiful, and at the time in her life when she was most attractive, but there's something else too: watch the dance scene again, where The Mask woos her in the nightclub, before Dorian's goons break it up: super high-energy dancing from both of them, coupled with a quick set-up/payoff. The setup: his "I'm gonna kiss you now" expression, then her anticipation, then pay-off: a kiss that literally BLOWS HER SHOES OFF! - That's a pretty passionate moment in the history of film: Hard not to fall in love with it!

He’s great at playing zany, cartoonish, characters like the Mask, the Grinch, the Riddler. He can actually also play creepy characters too like in the movie The Cableguy. The Truman Show was another good movie of his as well.

This movie really showed people the incredible (albeit usually zany) talent of Jim Carrey. I first noticed him as one of the original cast members of "In Living Color". A hilarious skit-comedy show from 1990 (which, if you haven't seen it, you should definitely check it out).
'Tina Carlyle' was Cameron Diaz's first acting role. You talk about making your mark in Hollywood. She was talked about after this movie even more than Jim Carrey.
The red headed reporter ("Peggy Brandt') was played by Amy Yasbeck. She also played 'Maid Marian' in "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" (1993). She was also married to another phenomenal talent, John Ritter ("Three's Company" [1976-1984], "Bad Santa" [2003], "Problem Child" [1990], etc) until he sadly past away at age 54 in 2003.
The cop 'Lt. Mitch Kellaway' was played by Peter Riegert who was also in another movie that is an all time classic you should try if you haven't already. He played 'Donald "Boon" Schoenstein' in 1978s "National Lampoon's Animal House".

That's exactly what it is, BJ: alter ego. And when she visits him in jail, he spills the beans; he tells her he's a hopeless romantic. Truth is, the Green guy is who Stanley really is inside. Stanley-as-he-is-in- the-bank is really...a mask: a mask over his true self! Jim Carrey is way over the top...but he's got genius.
