How to properly mix concrete

- Mixing concrete is not an easy task. Lucky for us, we don't have to mix it the old way anymore, where we used to have to mix the sand and the cement together to get our concrete mix.
Nowadays, we can buy bags of properly mixed concrete with exact ratios of all the concrete ingredients we need. Watch me mix two bags of Quikrete concrete mix by hand in a wheelbarrow.
A similar wheelbarrow can be found here amzn.to/3fcfyin

Really helped me make concrete shoes. Thanks so much the shoes were great. Keep up the good work ❤
I liv
Oh yea concrete shoes 👍

Haha RUclips connects the most unlikely of people
Here is my tip. Once you get a lot of the dry mix in the back of the wheel barrow, start using the hoe from the front. The long slope of the front allows you to drag more concrete, the water doesn't splash as much and the I think the wheel barrow is more stable. My second tip is use 60 pound bags if you are old :)
Tip from a pro on another channel I found too late for my pad I just did this morning: add one digging shovel of Portland cement to the bag of concrete to get more cream stuff at the top. The solution to all the stones and roughness.
Another tip I learned from my experienced uncle is to first add the total amount of water for one bag or two in the wheelbarrow, then cut the bags in half on a table (or on the floor) while putting a metal pipe underneath them and cutting them with a blade on top. You just pull the pipe upwards and the bag splits in two and you can add one half at a time while mixing. It makes for an easier less tiring mix
This is AWESOME! You've convinced me, and I'm finally gonna pour my first concrete this weekend!
Great! Thanks for watching
How did it work out for ya? I'm about to pour to fill in a hole in my kitchen!
Same here bro. I’m going to mix and pour by first project.
Don't forget to tie rebar if you night put a load on it.
I’m about to mix my first guys! Wish me luck 🤞
I just use my Dad's old garden rake and a mortar tub
This video made my job much easier - thank you very much sir
My pleasure. Thanks for the kind words.
This sounds like the masterpiece theatre of concrete. This guy could be talking about taking a dump and wiping your behind and it would sound soothing and intelligent the way he says things.
Ambient hyperspace music while watching dude mix concrete. Relaxing.
You used the same tool as I'm thinking of using. I'm glad.
i have no need for concrete but yet i enjoyed watching this video
Thank you
Outstanding. Thank you.
Thanks for the tips! I will do this on a small project "outdoor shower floor"
My pleasure. Thanks for watching
Omg I'm actually trying to make a spare building in backyard with a shower
Put my outdoor shower in 15 years ago. Love it, screened from neighbors for added benefits. Make sure to engrave message!
I put Isiah 55:1

Thanks. My dad and I are building a Wall around our house, and he’s gonna teach me how to mix concrete tmr. But I’m gonna surprise him by getting it done early
Did y0u?

Don’t forget he might of wanted to teach you!
how is the wall holding up
I too am interested in the wall 🤔
An excellent video. I will be mixing concrete soon.
I’m going to try this!

hi YOYO
Fell asleep to concrete! Thank you.
Very helpful
Thanks so much
Excellent video💪
Glad you liked it!
Thank you 🙏
Ok got it.Easy.Let's go to work. After work: nobody said how hard is mixing even small amount of concrete it demands some muscles 😃
Good idea, you make it look simple, thanks for sharing 😃👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Great help on this thank you and I pray my project is right
Thank you for watching
@@NeverStopDIY your welcome today we start our little project wish us luck 😊
@@keenacummings2017 good luck! It's not as hard as it looks.
@@NeverStopDIY we got it and you were so right .. thank you once again
@@keenacummings2017 you are welcome
Thanks for talking me out of buying a cement mixer i have no where to store
Glad to help
Mouth watering 🤤🤤
How much water would I use for half a bag? What I'm asking is what's the ratio of quick crete to water? I'll probably use a few cups of the concrete.
Thank you - i didnt know about work time.
You made the mixing technic harder by adding water to the bag.
Adding the bag to water is much easier.
Great video and great information
Excellent video...
Thank you!
Thanks so much

Is there a difference in concrete and cement when purchasing Quickrete?
Concrete is a combination of rock, sand and cement. (In varying ammounts) if you buy cement, then you have to buy rock, and sand too. The bags of concrete its already mixed for convenience.
Quikrete has numerous products. Read the bags
Bingo! I use a pick axe, but same idea. I used a shovel for years
Thank you
THANK YOU SIR..
I have a project and I think I will rent a mixer from the lumber yard. If I have it figured correctly I need mix 20 bags.
Hi, yes thanks for sharing this helpful video. What the name of the tool you were using to mix the cement. Thanks
something like draw hoe.
It's a 'hoe' a garden hoe
No need to put gravel in?
You Da man just subbed
I always used one gallon of water but I’ll cut it back
How much time do you have to pour that and then mix another batch before the first pour Dries?
It depends on how wet/dry you mixed the 1st batch. Also, weather temperature, humidity, and on how dry/wet the ground you're going to pour the concrete on. If the condition(s) are dry, then mix the 1st batch wet and thinner so it won't dry out before the 2nd batch is ready.
Is ready mixed concrete more expensive?
Isn't that way more than 1/2 gallon of water per bag?
I am installing a steel/metal fencing post. The hole that I dug is 3 feet 9 inches deep with a diameter of 14 inches. How bags of Quikrete do you think I would need assuming I want the Quikrete to come up to ground level.
Can this concrete be used for laying bricks?
El.ranchero
Pisos concreto
Work#1
I used the same bag and it look nothing like this. It has rocks in there and doesn’t look slushy
Not sure why. It's OK if there are bigger rocks inside, but if you use regular water with this product, the result should be the same.
Slow down the video at 5 minutes and you'll see that the mix is starting to look like it's supposed to. Enlarge the picture and you'll see the rocks in there. You have to mix it completely with the amount of water it states on the bag and it will not look watery.
How many HP is your barrow ? It looks very fast,
1/2 :)
concrete consist of sand and gravel, this is more of a mortar
It's American concrete :)
If you look at the bag at the third second you will see that it states it is concrete mix. Yes it does have Portland cement as well as aggregate. Quikrete's aggregate is smaller than stone you get from pre-mixed from a plant. Regardless if done per instructions you'll get proper strength concrete
Looks like mortar mix not concrete mix
Was no sand needed to mix in with the cement?
No, this is al premixed
Seems like if you put too much water that could cause the con crete to crack easily
Thanks for posting! I tried mixing several small samples and the concrete literally be broken with my hand. (It was about 2 inches thick) I did this several times with diff water amounts. Any ideas?
I can't tell for sure but I am thinking that the small amount of concrete might be the problem. This type of concrete is meant to be poured in larger amounts. I am pretty sure if you go bigger, you won't have this problem. Make sure you let it dry for several days as well.
@@NeverStopDIY Gotcha, unfortunately, I am going to use it to repair joints in my flagstone patio. I removed crumbling joint material, so it won’t be large areas. But the concrete I found is the only one that sort of matches the existing joint color. Thanks!
Use concrete patch with a glue additive as well as wet the area first, bonding concrete to existing concrete takes special materials
@@owenshiverdecker6999 thanks, but bad timing, I JUST went ahead and did it last week after couple months trying to find a solution. I do appreciate the info!
How come this concrete looks like sand and mine has small rocks everywhere in it? When i mix it they sit on the surface and it doesn’t look smooth. It’s literally the same brand quikrete 50 pound bag ?????
It must a different batch they had
If you check out the bag he used and read what is in it per ATSM it meets the definition of concrete which is sand, Portland cement, and stone that is mixed with water per the instructions. When you mix it properly per the instructions and let it set, maybe 1- 2 hours the mix has cured enough to trowel it smooth. You can float it before that then let it harden up more. If you try to finish it too early the rocks won't settle and you'll see them. If you wait too long then it is very difficult to finish smooth.
Why not just mix it with a drill bit mixer???
I messed up. I was in a hurry against time. I ended up with some rocks on top. I don't think I mixed it enough. It's curred for a day and want to add on top to smooth it out. I don't know what else to do, it's too rough. Would you have any suggestions? Thank you.
Depends on how big your surface is. There are some products you can use to smooth it out. Like this: www.lowes.com/pd/QUIKRETE-ReCap-Concrete-Resurfacer/1000812310?cm_mmc=shp-_-c-_-prd-_-bdm-_-ggl-_-LIA_BDM_210_Concrete-Block-_-1000812310-_-0-_-0-_-0&ds_rl=1286981&gclid=Cj0KCQiA4b2MBhD2ARIsAIrcB-SkgCao9knmWjH-_3KkAA4pQHKbR1c02hKKkKgxke9I0nQv3S-7vJEaAgyIEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
@@NeverStopDIY It's not very big. I realized I put way too much water in the mix. I have to level some areas out also. I'm thinking of adding the rest of my cement (mixed correctly) on top.
I built a wall once
Should of put wheel barrow first problem 1.
You don’t make sense
Enis?
Yes
I used that brand ones, it broke in few years...no good
👍👍
In layman's terms please. lmao
Ok now that I have mixed my cement for 7 minutes , now is concrete...... 🤐
That’s definitely not 3 quarts per bag more like 3 gallons total for 2 bags
Thats not concrete, its mortar mix
Concrete has stone in it
The bag clearly says concrete mix. Mortar is is used for bricklaying.
@@NeverStopDIY hardly any stone in it. The stone is the strength in concrete
I wouldn’t use that stuff
Can't any of you who keep saying this is mortar mix not see at the beginning of the video, around the third second that the bag says concrete mix. The bag has both Portland cement and aggregate. The stones are smaller than what you get from concrete plants, but when you add the amount of water stated on the bag and makes it properly it becomes the strength that the bag shows. I've done this for over 30 years and it sure looks like he did it right. If you look at the video after 5 minutes the concrete starts looking like all the ingredients have been mixed. You have to make sure all the powder has been saturated with water and mixed for several minutes afterwards. If you use the proper amount of water as the bag states and thoroughly mix it this concrete works.
This is not concrete, cause it lacks gravel
Gravel is already in the mix.

That's MASSIVELY more than 3 quarts per bag. Looks like AT LEAST twice that. Your eye is bad, measure for real next time and you'll see how far off you are on the ratios.
Thanks for watching. The result was perfect concrete, so I am pretty sure my eye was good.😉
3 quarts per 80 lb bag...but he added TWO bags of concrete. Pretty good eye after all. If I had a lot of bags to mix, I'd use something with a piece of tape or marked fill line to measure the water, and adjust the line until it delivered the right consistency
I agree the water is too much, which will cause less stength and surface issues. I follow the instruction on 80lb bag and cannot mix the concrete into paste or muddy with fluidity, and the concrete bricks I made got many issues. Maybe should use an electric mixer like the professional trucks…
What happened to sand?
Everything is in the bag
This is Brilliant. Exactly what I need as a beginner. Thank you Sir!
You're very welcome!
What's brilliant about it??
Most relaxing concrete video on youtube ; ) thanks
You are welcome
Exactly what I needed -thanks! This will be used to finish off an outdoor bar err kitchen, very important project!
You are welcome!
@@NeverStopDIY I showed my dad the video and he scoffed at using a hoe and told me about the good old days when the Irish navies used a shovel. I started with there hoe and he came in after with his shovel. I think the hoe method is great, especially if there is just one person, just takes time. The shovel method seems to take far more energy. We mixed 8 bags of 80LB in no time for the bar, worked great.
@Jacana Productions I have used the shovel method and that is a good way to mix bigger amounts of concrete, but you need two people, maybe even three to pour water. The way you do it is you would form a long line of sand and rocks 1-2 feet wide and pour cement on top. Each person would take a shovel and start flipping the material at the same time from one end to the other. This is how you dry mix the materials. Once that is mixed, you would spread it apart forming a pond like structure and pour water inside. You mix it up a little and repeat the 2 person flipping process from one end to the other. You would add more water as needed along the process.
How long does it take to dry after you applied it on top of the sand?
About 24 hours to be able to walk on it
Thank you! I’ve ordered my concrete bags and about to go to Lowe’s to pick them up. Making a 2 x 3.5 concrete slab for side porch steps.
is that arnold schwarzenegger voice?
No
As I go to do my project I come online to ask: WHY is my bag of concrete (same kind as pictured) not granulated & so it's like small pebbles VS fine like sand? when I add my water it don't do anything. Even my shovel can't make it not so crunchy & fine.
Good lad!
Thanks for the tips.
that's waaaaay too much water. follow the directions on the bag
First idk why I clicked this
I bought Quickrete ready mix but it had rocks in it. Which kind are you using without rocks?
It's concrete mix. It has small aggregate already in the mix
How much water did you use for the 2 80lb bags? Was it 2 gallons or more?
It usually says on the bag, about 3qts/liters
1 gallon water for every 80lb bag
Thank you. Very helpful video. Now outside to give it a shot!
This is how my Daddy taught me many years ago. I was his "mud man" at nine years old. (But only one bag at a time)
You can do the same without readymix good technique slushing it forward always think of making cake when mixing concrete or cement and your pour will be bullet proof.
Thanks for the tip!
I am creating a video on construction safety that ties into chemical burns from portland cement and silicosis, would I be able to incorporate a few sections of your video (not including your voice), just to visually show the viewers what I am speaking of? The goal will be to distribute this to as many construction companies as I can in the world. Thank you for your time
That's fine. Go ahead :)
More rocket science??
How do you make concrete thick enough to make like a clay??
Less water

how many square metres would this fill do you think ?
My husband died in june, and I have to do things outside now,I have to cover 2 hole in the driveway ,and u gave an idea with the concrete. Thanks
This is definitely not the easiest way, get a contractor garbage bag and mix it in the bag. Takes 20 seconds to mix with no tools.

How much square foot does i bag make
If only Guyanese see this
Shouldn't this be titled "How to properly mix cement?" Concrete has aggregate mixed in.
Look at the video at the third second. It says concrete mix. There is aggregate in there! Go get a bag that looks just like that and read what's in it.
