I think it's more accurate to say that google only cares about google's profits. Right now, the vast majority of this comes from advertising. I agree that the updates have nothing to do with anything else. All they care about is their own bottom line. I personally don't have a problem with this - I get pissed off at google when they behave as if they now own the internet.
