8:07 Tori Hunter allows an inside the park home run to Oakland at the Metrodone, on the first hitter of the game, WOW. Surprisingly, Tori Hunter will allow an inside the park home run at the Metrodome to Oakland in the 2006 ALDS as well.
As of September 2023, this was the last time the Twins won a playoff series. It's been so long that: -kids born during this series will be able to legally drink alcohol in the US in 2 weeks -Torii Hunter was referred to as a "kid" (he's pushing 50 and has been retired for almost a decade). -Stuart Scott was alive and Sportscenter was relevant -Nelly had the Number 1 song on the US Billboard 100 -the iPod, which has been irrelevant for over 10 years was in its infancy -"Big Papi" was just David Ortiz, an inconsistent player, plagued by injuries and bad coaching, nowhere near any conversation of the Hall of Fame. C'mon Twins, it's been forever. Win a flipping playoff series this October...
There were ALOT of empty seats for the decisive game 5 in Oakland. Thats because (correct me if im wrong), tons of California sports team were playing that day as well om California (Giants, Angels, 49ERS, Chargers)
The Angels had won the ALDS the day before. But in the Bay Area, the Giants did host the Braves in Game 4 at Pac Bell Park, while the 49ers hosted the Rams at Candlestick.
After an 11-year wait, the Twins overcame contraction threats to win the AL Central with a 94-67 record. Meanwhile, the Oakland A's are hoping their third playoff trip in a row is the charm with their 103-59 record and the AL West title to boot. The Oakland Coliseum was the site for Game 1, and early on, the Twins' defense imploded with three errors on record and several other mental lapses in the first two innings, and the A's jumped to a 5-1 lead. Come the 3rd, Corey Koskie's two-run shot snapped the Twins out of their jitters. Minnesota added three runs in the 6th, and their bullpen held it on as the Twins stole the game, 7-5. The Twins, though, were 23-31 against left-handers during the season. And in Game 2, Oakland's Mark Mulder allowed just one run in 6 innings. Eric Chavez blasted a three-run shot in the first, and the Green and Gold cruised to a 9-1 win and headed to Minnesota tied at 1. A Metrodome crowd of 55,932 brought their homer hankies and the noise for Game 3. Ray Durham led off the game with an inside-the-park home run that quieted the decibel levels 98%. Scott Hatteberg followed suit with a more conventional home run. Jermaine Dye's 6th inning blast broke a 3-3 tie, as the A's--behind Barry Zito--won, 6-3, needing just one win to reach the ALCS. But in Game 4, the Twins wouldn't go down easy. Tied at 2-2 in the 4th, the A's pitching and defense fell apart, and by the time the inning ended, 7 Twins' runners crossed the plate. Minnesota won, 11-2, and it is now a one-game showdown. Game 5 in Oakland would decide which team will move on. Mark Mulder, on three days' rest, pitching a gutsy game, going 7 innings allowing 2 runs while striking out 9. But Brad Radke allowed only one run in 6 1/3 frames. Come the 9th, A.J. Pierzynski homered as part of a three-run top half for a 5-1 Twins' lead. The A's answered in the home half on a three-run blast by Mark Ellis to cut it to 5-4. Eddie Guardado, however, allowed no more, as Durham fouled out to end the game with the tying run on first. For the third straight year, my A's did not win the last game of the season. The curtain closes on the "Moneyball" season of the A's (and Art Howe's tenure as manager). As for the Twins, they will now host the Angels in one of the more unexpected ALCS matchups in recent memory.
If anyone has followed the SW561 2002 MLB season hightlights, youll notice that basically every game in the regular season between Athletics-Twins was a close game. So no surprise that this ALDS went 5 games.
Both teams defense was horrendous in this ALDS. Especially for the Twins, who were the best defensive team in 2002, and that the moment, one of the best defensive teams of all time. As for this series, Tim Hudson was HORRIBLE. I love Tim Hudson, but WOW!!! Especially when he let that game 1 get away. While Mulder was pitching gems. As for Oakland, they have once again denied us an All-AL-West-ALCS matchup for the third consecutive season.
Tim Hudson was the difference in this series. He was the eldest of the big 3 and pitched like trash in both his starts. Guy as good as him has no excuse for blowing a 4 run lead in game 1.
David Ortiz: Remember that name
W
Instead of a clash of 100 win titans or an all-AL West ALCS…… we get Twins vs Angels which will surely set ratings records 😂
I sure will watch. At least it won't feature Yankee pinstripes for the first time in 5 years.
One of my favorite Twins teams ever. They were not supposed to win this series
Twins 6th straight postseason win when facing elimination.
They have now lost their last 9.
So much for being battle tested
A team that won baseball’s toughest division got beat by the champs of the weakest division

This is the last playoff series win by the Twins until the 2023 AL Wild Card Series.
Im an indians fan and i have to admit i was a fan of this twins team they were awesome
Until today
Oakland Athletics have not playoff win yet until 2006
Imagine if Oakland had won that game 5 in the bottom of the 9th, talk about more 2002 Moneyball magic for the Athletics
I'm sure Brad Pitt is wondering how he is going to tell Jennifer Aniston how he couldn't win the last game of the season.
@@cdelano81 Ahh, they should have casted Jennifer Aniston to play Billy's wife in Moneyball
100+ win season, 20 straight wins…. And you lose to a team that won a lousy AL Central by default?
As of September 2023, this was the last time the Twins won a playoff series.

The long wait is over. The Twins finally won a playoff series today.
@@JeffreyHietala As a Blue Jays' fan, YOU'RE WELCOME. hahaha
The Moneyball Athletics go down in a big upset to the upstart Twins. Another heartbreaking ALDS loss for Oakland.

Twins vs Angels, just as we all predicted
If anyone has followed the SW561 2002 MLB season hightlights, youll notice that basically every game in the regular season between Athletics-Twins was a close game. So no surprise that this ALDS went 5 games.
And 2 decades later, the Twins are headed back to the playoffs, and the A's are headed to Vegas.
This is how the Moneyball movie ended😅
Exactly
the last playoff series won by the Twins as over the next several years they would become the Yankees' post season punching bags
Barry Zito should have started games 1 and 5
In hindsight, the A's should've done that. We lost the series in Game 1 where we could not hold the 5-1 lead after 2 innings.
Tim Hudson is a stud. Im ok with him starting game 1. And Mulder pitched great in game 5
2002 Small Market Twins : "Where's OUR movie? "
If Everyday Eddie had actually blown game 5 this sorry ass franchise wouldn't have a postseason series win for 31 years and counting.
David Justice and Randy Velarde have retired
Both teams defense was horrendous in this ALDS. Especially for the Twins, who were the best defensive team in 2002, and that the moment, one of the best defensive teams of all time.

The last playoff win for Minnesota Twins until 2023 in AL Wild Card game against the Toronto Blue Jays
Twins stun a Oakland Athletics after 20 game winning streak
Eddie guardado was a horrible closer.
money ball anyone
