  • Motherless Brooklyn: Edward Norton & Gugu Mbatha-Raw Interview | TIFF 2019
One of the many films to premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival was Motherless Brooklyn. Written and directed by Edward Norton, the 50s-set crime drama is set in New York City and focuses on a private eye (Norton) who suffers from Tourette’s Syndrome and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. When his boss (Bruce Willis) is murdered, Norton and the team he works with set out to discover why their boss was killed. Adapted from the novel by Jonathan Lethem, the incredible cast also includes Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Bobby Cannavale, Cherry Jones, Michael Kenneth Williams, Leslie Mann, Ethan Suplee, Dallas Roberts, Josh Pais, Robert Ray Wisdom, Fisher Stevens, Alec Baldwin and Willem Dafoe.
Shortly before seeing the film, I got to talk with Edward Norton and Gugu Mbatha-Raw at the Collider studio at TIFF. They talked about being at the Toronto Film Festival, the challenges of filming in NYC, what drew Mbatha-Raw to the role, the importance of hiring the right people, why Norton wanted to both act and direct the film, what made him nervous when he got in the editing room, and a lot more.

motherless brooklyn is a superb film. norton has a reputation as a difficult actor who's always changing scripts, scenes & costumes and this film which he wrote, directed and starred in possibly serves as evidence that when he makes a suggestion to other directors or scriptwriters, he's worth listening to.

Ed Norton always seems ok to me. People say he’s difficult to work with but i think he just wants to get things right.

Just watched this film. Loved the story, the acting and the jazz. Love film noir and this is a great neo noir. Fantastic job, E.N.

Gugu seems so nice and lovely person, I can't stop looking at her, she's so beautiful and shiny and she got that love in her eyes♥️ I haven't seen any movie with her but I can't wait to see her in Motherless Brooklyn.
By the way, the more interviews I watch about this movie, the more I want to see it. I've been a huge fan of Edward for so long, he's probably my first and only favorite actor till the end of this world, so I'm extremely exited about this movie. Can't wait to see it omg

Completely agree with him about movie times/length. As long as it's good/interesting I don't care how long a movie is

The better a movie is the longer I want it to be! Isn't that obvious?! I'm ever so glad that Lawrence of Arabia was as long as it was (nearly four hours?) And Kennith Branagh's Hmlet (nearly four hours) was orgasmic!

I am so struggling with his clean image in the Illusionist, very little verbage, then watching 8 other films, such as Fight Club and American History X, just really amused in character acting, such brilliance and complexity. I could go on and on because I am just not a surfaced conversations, because I see soo much, maybe too much. Why Mr. Norton was only nominated and not given is a lost to those who makes those decisions. I must admit you need a damn Masters degree if not a Ph.d with that damn Fight Club with bad boy Brad Pitt... all thumbs up for Mr. Norton. Really can do interviews with deep thoughts almost to a fault, but hey, I get it totally.
