  • In the current refugee crisis Amsterdam has proved true to its nickname - Mokum, a Yiddish word meaning 'safe haven'.
Amsterdammers are showing their solidarity in many ways.
Following our blog post about the fundraising cookbook Soup for Syria, The American Bookcenter, one of the most popular bookstores in the heart of Amsterdam, organised a soup drive to promote the book and support hunger relief efforts in UNHCR refugee camps.
Private citizens are playing a big part. Since the beginning of the crisis, a growing number of people joined Refugees Welcome Amsterdam, a spontaneous organisation that welcomes refugees at the central train station.
As Soup As Possible interviewed two of them: Christi, who cooks soup for the refugees arriving at Central Station, and Majd, a young Syrian refugee who joined the group and decided to share his story.
