Does anyone else think that Jedi aren’t religious? Well, consider the definition of religion and the definition of belief. •Religion is the belief and worship of a supernatural power. •Belief is thinking something exists without proof it exists or knowing it exists. So the Jedi clearly know the force is real. So they don’t believe in it, because they don’t need to. They definitely don’t worship it either. I have never heard a Jedi pray. However, the Jedi do have similarities with many religions. Meditation is practised in many religions, but it is also used by people who aren’t religious or using it for religious purposes to clear their minds. The Jedi robes can be interpreted as a sign of religion. But aren’t they more like a uniform? Not only that, but Thrawn describes Anakin’s jedi apparel as “the garb of a warrior” and explains to a confused Skywalker about how it allows for movement and yet has other functions. Not all Jedi wear actual Jedi robes. Some Jedi, like Luminara Unduli and Barriss Offee wear Mirialan robes, which are similar. Some Jedi, like Aayla Secura and Ahsoka Tano wear other types of clothing, usually worn by members of their species. Wookieepedia states that Aayla Secura was permitted to wear her own clothes, but in the colours and, to an extent, style, of Jedi robes. And this isn’t directly religious either; it has been hypothesised that the first Jedi came from Tatooine (I’m not sure how that works), and as such, wore desert clothes. Some Jedi probably considered it a religion. Many outsiders, like Wilhuff Tarkin, considered it a religion. But that isn’t necessarily correct. While the Jedi all (or most) lived in a temple, were taken at a young age and practised mysterious abilities, consider this question. What else would you call a Jedi temple? Base don’t have much of a ring to it. Neither does command centre. The Jedi had to take younglings at an early age to fit in the training and stop them from turning to the dark side. The no attachments thing was ridiculous, and bound to fail from the beginning, but look at the Jedi of the High Republic era. They could marry, have children and have attachments. And the whole point of the High Republic era is to show the Jedi getting it right. Are all superheroes* monks or cultists? No. Do they have mysterious powers? Yes. So while the Jedi have several features that are reminiscent of religions, they don’t exactly fit the definition. Not when you look closely. Although words like “temple”, “order” and “meditate” draw you into this illusion. But if you think Jedi are religious, monks, or cultists, that’s fine. I don’t intend to change anyone’s opinion here, just present my own and make people think more about subjects so often taken for granted.
