Total weight only matters for bridges. For off road it's the ground pressure that is important, and that is roughly the same for eastern and western tanks. Western tanks are larger (especially longer) and have more track contact area to compensate for the higher weight. Leopard 2A7 actually has a slightly lower ground pressure than a T-90M. Power/weight ratio is also better on the Leopard 2A7.

It's remarkable how good those tanks hide in the field. If they don't move, they are really hard to spot.
