Ahh my old request of Mandolin Orange from years ago. Nice.
For a wonderful treat try their Bob Dylan cover of Boots of Spanish Leather.
@Wayne Thera Good call on these folks-sorry I didn’t get to it back then. Did you request this song or a different one?
@@RockN2Country, hey Don, loved your commentary at the end of the video as well. Yes we have all made mistake and we try to learn from them and move forward, but people in power just won’t let that happen it seems.
Back to Mandolin Orange as I still call them. The first video I seen from them was Boots of Spanish Leather. I’m not the biggest Bob Dylan fan, but the story is quite interesting of a failing long distance relationship. Just top notch musicianship. Let’s just say it led to a deep dive, just like Colter Wall, Tyler Childers and Steelwoods. Wildfire from Paste Studio is a great recording. Anyways have a good weekend good sir.
Yes their version of Boots of Spanish Leather is THE BEST.
Nice reaction Don. I'm familiar with this song being performed by Mandolin Orange, but they changed their name at some point to Watchhouse. Don't know if all the members are the same, but the husband and wife duo (Emily Frantz and Andrew Marlin) are still there.
That is the original Mandolin Orange members. I saw them several times in Jackson MS (Duling Hall) and in New Orleans at Tipitina's. They are fantastic under any name. The electric player has touch for days. They are all so good.
They were called Mandolin Orange at the time they did this song. Change their name 2 years ago(?) because they wanted a more mature name as they have matured; hence Watchouse. They have an extensive catalog of songs. Check out their song “Golden Embers “ - great song. Also, their cover of Dylan’s “Boots of Spanish Leather” - the best cover of that song.
Great bluegrass group. Love to see groups keeping it alive. Thanks for sharing James
I'm so glad you love this. It's stunningly pretty. The lyrics are just devastating too.
They used to be Mandolin Orange before the name change I saw them play for free outside the dorms at NC State University. They’re the real deal. They were very approachable and sweet to my wife son and myself. Love them.
Just saw them in Pennsylvania this month. They are probably my favorite right now.
Heck yeah I like that one, that's a great sound
I like the overall feel of the group's music even though I don't necessarily agree with the sentiment of the song. I would also like to see your reaction to that Home Free song.
@John Davidson Thanks-I am considering posting it this coming week.
Talented band...enjoyed the music. Didn't care for their take on the subject and frankly don't believe there's a fire of hate still burning in all my neighbors because we lost the war, lost the slaves, or lost our souls for the sake of pride. Now there is such thing as Southern pride and Texas pride and sometimes it ticks other folks off (especially during football season). As a Texan, our history teaches us that we were once a people under six different flags...I don't identify a loss to myself today because I'm not Spanish or French just as I don't long to return to the Confederacy. To suggest otherwise, is just idiotic. I found the comment below from someone unknown to me that mirrors many of my sentiments...I'll leave y'all with this.

@Kyle B No, if you listen closely, it is a song that claims there is some evil force in this country that started with slavery and was never stamped out after the civil war. It is just another attempt of mainstream culture to villainize half of the country. I am neither a Republican nor a Democrat. But I am sick of watching the left demonize the right. As an independent bystander, I have the ability to view the situation somewhat objectively. It is the left in this country that is tearing everything apart. They are the reason we are "caught in a wildfire".
Mandolin Orange is openly anti-conservative, Trust me, I've been to one of their concerts. Listen to the way this song makes a blanket demonization of "the south". That doesn't seem very constructive now, does it? If you can't see what the true purpose of this song was (to scold half the country), then you are wearing a blindfold.
You cannot sit around a campfire and hold hands and have unity when one side is burning the country to the ground. Sorry, not even all of the hippy energy in the world could make that work.
Well, the right is demonized because they're openly racist and all their talking points are based on hate. So defend them all you want. This song is about you.
I don't necessarily agree with everything they say but the magic in the lyrics,
instruments and the cohesiveness that the band has is magic.
The lyrics are very much the truth about what's going on in the US.
They remind me a lot of Nickle Creek.
Hey! Glad you liked it! I'll send you some more of there stuff. On your own time check out this version. I'll send you the link for stuff next time.

I really appreciate their work here. I agree about having doubts about the message, but it is skillfully and tastefully done. Thanks James for the thought provoking request, and thanks Don for a great reaction --- you're three for three today!!!
