  • Scanner we used is an Autel MS908 which gave us
    Intake Sprocket Duty Cycle Command % Bank 1
    Intake Sprocket Duty Cycle Actual % Bank 1
    Bank 1 Intake Cam Degree
    Intake Sprocket Duty Cycle Command % Bank 2
    Intake Sprocket Duty Cycle Actual % Bank 2
    Bank 2 Intake Cam Degree
    These numbers will indicate position so you can see where the problem is.
    There's also an article that explains very well how the system works at this link: static.nhtsa.g...
    Actual Specs that we found were on page 27 of that linked PDF
    What we found when diagnosing in the "learned value" section of special functions in our ECM module options was our bank 1 intake sprocket was out of specs:
    Specs Listed for BRZ/FRS
    Intake Min - 52 Intake Max - 72
    Exhaust Min - 78 Exhaust Max - 98
    Our intake min on Bank 1 intake was at 46 so we knew that there was an issue with that sprocket and needed to be replaced as well after further diagnosis and after we found the other bank 2 sprocket was sticking.

    Got a 2006 Subaru Tribeca with P0016 & P0018 and it's a nightmare. I did an engine oil flush, fresh oil, new filter, replaced the valve oil solenoids. CEL came back after 30 miles if that. I only have a basic Autel MaxiLink to read/reset codes, but nothing fancier.
    Was going to sell the car but now it's hopeless without dumping a bunch of money into it which I don't have.
    I can replace the camshaft/crankshaft position sensors but after that, if it doesn't resolve, it will be most likely a chain/guide/sprocket.

    You are not right that say the sprocket should stay in oil whole night ! The Subaru technical person said the TCM should reprogram for new sprocket !

    I resealed the cam carriers, valve covers and timing cover and now I have rhe P0018 code. Scanner says the bank 2 intake cam is at 22° advanced all the time. The other side does change but just a few degrees either way. Swapped all of the sensors and no change. I'm 100% the chains are on right but the arrows never lined up on the drivers side.
    Not sure which way to go with this now. Lol any ideals?

    Got code p0016 and that piece on the intake sprocket also fell off when i took it off, so we replaced that sprocket. Inspected rest of timing components which all seemed to be okay. After replacing sprocket and checking timing, Now we get p0017 for the exhaust side. Could the exhaust sprocket now be sticking ? Any help is appreciated .

      Mine did the same in the top drivers side. Also wouldn’t align unless I manual moved the face plate. Not the cam. Believe is due no oil pressure.

    Update: Needed ECU replacement because the learned values on cam timing cannot be adjusted once they're out of specifications - make sure you diagnose the code correctly the FIRST time so you don't have to go back, and if out of spec, ecu will need to be replaced as well. I tried used ECU but would not read new VIN and could not get it to read keys, let me know if you guys have any solutions - I tried using AUTEL scanner and Snap On Triton - neither worked. I didn't have time to order and try Toyota Techstream off of amazon.

    • @7MGTEsupra89
      @7MGTEsupra89 2 года назад +1

      I work for Toyota dealer. Techstream CAN NOT reset it, neither can Subaru's system. They both note the ECM MUST BE replaced. Absolute a pitiful design on Subaru's part.

      Hello. to get the used ecu working or at least starting the car. you will need to connect the used ecu to the car. On the OBD port short pins TC and CG (pin 4 and 13). turn the ignition to ON and leave it like that for 30 min. you will see some light be flashing on the cluster.
      after 30 min turn key to off, take out the wire from the pins. and you can start the car.

    Are the vvt sprockets supposed to be able to turn freely without turn the camshaft?

    • @totalupgradeautomotive7276
      @totalupgradeautomotive7276  Год назад

      Not supposed to turn freely - if they do, most likely they're bad.

    • @G-Tech10
      @G-Tech10 Год назад

      Just had my first one do this to me on reassembly today . Its confusing because on disassembly, the gear feels "fine" because its already maxed out in one direction, then when you turn it the other way on assembly, oil dumps out of it and it becomes loose and turns freely by hand. Ive done about 15 J02 recalls, they are not supposed to turn by hand, calling Toyota tomorrow about it.

      @@G-Tech10 If you do this when you install the left side or bank side two drain the oil from the sprocket with the aim of making your chain easier when you start the vehicle it can make a sound

    • @marloncruz7078
      @marloncruz7078 12 дней назад

      @@G-Tech10 It will make a strange sound because the cam gears are unloaded, in fact occasionally they have a hard time making their first engine start but once they are loaded with oil everything will be normal.

    • @marloncruz7078
      @marloncruz7078 12 дней назад

      @@G-Tech10 The code does not refer to the gear wheel, it refers to the solenoid that controls the oil pressure. It tends to confuse the solenoid when the oil is very thick and it fails to release

      @@TheMinecrafters691 Change the solenoid on that bank that tells you not to change the wheel, put in the oil that it should have, I think it is 0-20, the solenoid is not contracting, that is why it shows you that code.

    I have a 2013 frs, with the p0018 code popping up, planning to change the bank 2 sensor a sprocket. Once I erase the code the car drives fine like the code was never there, but after around 10 miles the code would pop back up. have any tips?

    • @totalupgradeautomotive7276
      @totalupgradeautomotive7276  2 года назад

      You have to replace ECU due to learned values of cam adjuster sprockets, once the computer has learned a value that is out of specifications, it cannot unlearn it and will continuously set codes even with new sprockets.

      @insaiyann8925 2 года назад

      @@totalupgradeautomotive7276 ahh i see, so regardless of me changing the sprockets i’m going to need a new ecu. this code came on after i switches to 5w 30 oil, so yesterday while we drove we looked at the live data of all the vvt areas and some numbers were very off of each other. we flushed the engine and put in the original 0w 20 oil and looked at the live data and everything seems within range. but the code came back on after 25 miles of driving.
