The KitchenAid meat grinder cannot go in reverse unlike most stand-alone meat grinders. Reverse comes in handy if you're grinding meat for dog or cat food. Skin, sinew, cartilage, and bone can jam up a meat grinder and reversing the meat grinder is the easiest way to clear a jam.

I got one of these a couple weeks ago - did watch this video first - and I'm happy with it. I only grind a little meat for my wife and I, to make beef and pork meatloaf, a little sausage, hamburger, etc. It's fairly simple. If you use one, just be aware if there's any leakage of fluids back through the seal into the body of the mixer - that could be real bad in terms of just getting nasty. This should not occur with a mixer and grinder in good condition, but do watch for it. Grinding your own meat is worthwhile if you do a bunch at once and freeze it. I have a question - with my old plastic grinder - WHICH BROKE - I used to cut my meat into strips as opposed to chunks. Should I NOT be cutting into strips? BTW thank you for the tip on freezing the meat - I never did that.
The strips could possibly get wrapped around the auger and casue blockage. Small chunks have always worked well for when I use my grinder. Hope this helps!
Mine is plastic. Can’t assemble. My old one from 60 years ago is in storage. Bath and Beyond gave it to me for a kitchenaide promotion. What am I doing wrong? Never-mind. I pushed on it and turned it slightly and it seated. This plastic one is small and not like my old cast one. No comparison. Guess I need a new metal one.
This video was extremely helpful. Have you tried to put bones through the meat grinder? I want to grind up my own meat for my dogs food and bone is an important part. Thank you!
Margi, the KitchenAid grinder is not rated to grind bones. You would need a much more powerful grinder for bones. Rachel, you can use the KitchAid mixing bowl to catch the ground meat! We just used a cutting board so you could see the texture of the ground meat on video 🎥
Read on another blog that one should freeze a meat grinder for an hour before use. It that really necessary or even something that would be recommended for this particular meat grinder attachment?
Nancy Heaps - yes! This meat grinder can be tossed in the freezer for 20 minutes and that will help the grinding process as well - the cold metal helps to prevent fat in the meat from melting and gumming up. We were doing a smaller batch, so just partially freezing our meat worked just fine without freezing the actual grinder too.
Looking into getting one is there a seal that prevents liquid from leaking into the housing of the mixer? I saw a video of a non KitchenAid attachment that leaked into the housing and got really bad
brandonadam, there isn't one that I know of that has a seal at the back. I personally own one of these grinders and have not experienced any liquid leaking into the mixer itself.
Yes I do have a question. Is it true that juices of the meat sip into the mixer machine itself?😢 I saw some RUclips VI was telling about that and it was disgusting and I'm thinking why would kitchenaid make a grinder that would allow blood or meat juices to seep into the machine😭 Please can you answer my question
technically yes, but isn't reccomended - the grinds will be very inconsistent and you'd likely have to try and run them through miultiple times. Stick with a dedicated coffee grinder for coffee beans. Here is our selection of coffee grinders here: evkitch.com/418XDix
earnmyturns, a food processor would be a better tool for tasks like that - the meat grinder would be to powerful and aggressive leaving you with nut butters and mushy apples. This one is my favorite: evkitch.com/3oxvCyY
D Hansel, this grinder (also the Kitchenaid Mill attachment) is not reccomended to grind coffee beans - the oily coffee beans are not good for the metal gears and grinders of these machines. We reccomend a burr style coffee grinder for your beans. They'll do the the job much more easily and you have much more control of the coarsness of your grind. You can shop all of our grinders here at our store: www.everythingkitchens.com/coffee-grinder.html - - - I hope this helps!
@@EverythingKitchens I called Kitchenaid and they said they don't recommend coffee beans as they have too much oil in them. if one partially freezes the meat before grinding as suggested, is it okay to freeze the burger patties or sausages after creating them? I know it is not a good idea to re-freeze raw meat. Thanks.
Holly Blaney no issues. And honestly, you can refreeze raw meat that’s been properly thawed and handled without issue. GugaFoods does a video on that, you can look it up.
I don't know why my meat does not come smoothly. Can please give me some ideas of how to go about it? Like how cold should the meat be? How long should I keep the meat in the freezer? I am really frustrated.
Hey florenceugboko, here are a few things you can try: - put your cubed meat into the freezer for around 30-45 minutes to were the meat is partially frozen on the outside (but not fully frozen). - put the meat grinder itself into the freezer for 30 minutes to get it cold as well. - some meats are naturally more mushy like high-fat content cuts of beef and poultry. Having theses kinds of meat semi-frozen will help them come out smoothly. -work quickly - the ginder will start to heat up as it is working and your meat will start to come to room temperature quickly as well making for mushy meat coming from the grinder. - if you are having issues with grinding through a second time, put the 1st pass of grind on a piece of parchment paper on a tray into the freezer for 20 minutes to cool it back down, swap out the grinder blades, then grind for the second pass. I hope these tips can help you! Please let us know if you're still running into issues and visit us at everythingkitchens.com for our customer support team :) -Chef Austin
Richard, the grinder is for sure powerful enough to handle ingredients like that, but it sounds like it would be a hot pulpy mess and not very efficient. KitchenAid does have a fruit and veggie strainer that may be helpful: evkitch.com/3nUsrOY - - - But if you want full juice, a dedicated juicer would be the best option: evkitch.com/32PUtXv - - - I hope this helps!
Hi, Mike Sideri! Using a fine grinder plate, it is possible to grind cheese in this meat grinder. Though as the name suggests, the main purpose of this attachment is to grind meat. Hope that helps! Good luck!
Growing up, my mother always made chicken salad and ham salad from leftovers by putting the meat through a hand-crank grinder. How should I use my KitchenAid metal grinder to accomplish this?
Rebecca Shirkey-Solan, you can use the KitchenAid metal grinder the same way! just use the largest grinding place to quickly chop your cooked chicken or ham. If you want a finer consistency, switch to the second smallest grinding plate and run the meat through once more. Great suggestion! I'll have to try this next time I have leftover ham -Chef Austin 👨🍳
I had the original plastic one back in the 1990s. It was a pain, due to the plastic parts. I hope this means they will come out with an all metal pasta press. The plastic one is for the birds.
Yes it does! That would be a perfect use for the food grinder. You can also run veggies through it when grinding meat for meatballs or hard cheeses like parmesean to crumble it. I hope this helps! Find the grinder here: evkitch.com/2OPnMQV
Hello, I just bought one and wanted to know if there is a bigger plate/coarse than the large one that came with it. I need a bigger coarse of meat. Any specific bigger plate I need to buy? Thanks
Hey Myriam, I would use the largest hole grinding plate for steak tartare. If the pieces are too large after that, consider hand chopping after that to get the exact consistency you are looking for. I hope this helps!
Great video chef. It is quite helpful. My kit came with the different grinding plates and also 3 different blades (a single, a double, and a 4 sided like you used in the video). I get the different grind plates, but when do I use the different blades? Is it smaller grind = more blades? Thanks for your help.
I have both the plastic and just got the metal one last week I used warm water with a %10 bleach solution to sterilize mine, it's what restaurants use, and haven't had a problem with it the plastic sort of deformed in the dishwasher, it was still usable, but I hate plastic anything so getting the metal one was a nice upgrade for me almost none of the attachments for kitchenaid are dishwasher safe ( I made the mistake of putting the whisk and butterfly attachments in the dishwasher and ruined their finish, they still work, but they look horrid!)
@@misscndnwoman2177 The plastic one is worthless for anything other than very soft cuts of beef and chicken. Pork shoulder for sausage is out of the question.
Hmm... maybe try running under some hot water for a couple of minutes? That helps me when I can't get the lid off of jars. Hot water may help the metal expand.
I know this is an old post but I will ask my question: Irish White Pudding Sausage wants me to really turn the meat into more of a cream. What am I going to get from the small attachment? Thanks.
Hey Roger - I love Irish white pudding! You'll want to run your meat through the larger hole setting 1-2 times, then once through the smaller hole plate to achieve the consistency you are looking for. I hope this helps!
Hi Andrew, you are not required to run the meat through twice to make sausage - we did this to make a finer texture sausage in the end. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions.
It is recommended to grind sausage twice, using the smaller hole pattern plate. Most sausage has a denser, finer, more consistent texture than ground burger meat (where you want some gaps to hold moisture, fat, juices, etc).
David, we haven't tried it for cookie dough, but its definitely powerful enough for cookie dough ingredients! At this time there are no "spritz cookie" plates for the grinder if that is the kind of cookie you are referring to.
Patrick, you'll need to grind at least once first then use the sausage stuffer plate and tubes specifically for making sausage links. I hope this helps!
Will the taste of onions and garlic wash away after the usage in the grinder? Since I also want to make sweet cookies with the grinder, I'm rather afraid if putting spicy things in it as well. 🙈 Thanks for the answer in advance. Greetings from Germany.
Could elaborate or do a video working with parmesan cheese? Also, is it necessary to grind your ground beef twice. I have the plastic grinder and just purchased the metal grinder. I was a little disappointed to discover that it isn't dishwasher safe.

Hey L Chew, KitchenAid mixers have an attachment hub on the front of the mixer accessed by a thumbscrew and removing a small cover. Watch this video here to see it being installed: ruclips.net/video/oxA1UaN59IE/видео.html - I hope this helps!
@@EverythingKitchens It does, thank you!
buying mine today ,cant wait to start grinding, Thanks
Peter Clarke, you're going to love it! I just made more steak burgers at home for New Years Eve dinner 🍔🎉
We reccomend the LEM Big Bite Meat Grinder #12 for grinding harder items like bones (but is also great for grinding meats too!) You can see the grinder here: evkitch.com/3Bx8xnl - We can ship your grinder for free! If you have more questions on grinders, let me know and I can help out :) -Chef Austin
@@EverythingKitchens Thank you, Chef Austin!!
The best way to grind bones for pet food is to first cook the meat (chicken, beef, etc) in a pressure cooker. The bones become soft.
finley found a video on the metal meat grinder for KitchenAid thank you for that have been looking for a long time but how does it do on chicken and turkey that is what i am going to be useing that for meat is too expensive these days
danielle, the meat grinder does great on chicken! That is one of the meats we tested and it did wonderful. We can ship the meat grinder for free here: evkitch.com/2OPnMQV
This was very helpful.
Nice work, gonna try it now. Thanks for the video information.
Thank you for this demonstration!
Thank you! That was very helpful!
After I clean it where do i store it? back in box? fridge? freezer? cupboard. Please give a suggestion.
Great video.
kiwisun, the box is a perfect place to store it - the good quality foam and sturdy box were meant to be kept for storing the unit. I hope this helps!
Thanks for the super helpful video. One question, where is the bowl to catch the ground meat 🤔🤣
If I wanted to make my own salami, do they have a larger sausage tube for that?
Tony, at this time there is not a larger stuffer tube for this KitchenAid Grinder. I hope this helps!
Great information and content, very well explained. Awesome work!
Glad it helped!
Diana, I've never had this issue with the metal meat grinder. I personally own one too and have not seen this issue. I hope this helps! -Chef Austin
Can I use this for grinding coffee beans?
technically yes, but isn't reccomended - the grinds will be very inconsistent and you'd likely have to try and run them through miultiple times. Stick with a dedicated coffee grinder for coffee beans. Here is our selection of coffee grinders here: evkitch.com/418XDix
I want to grind nuts without creaming them and dried apple slices without pulverizing them. Would this tool work?
earnmyturns, a food processor would be a better tool for tasks like that - the meat grinder would be to powerful and aggressive leaving you with nut butters and mushy apples. This one is my favorite: evkitch.com/3oxvCyY
Can you take the corn/seed grinder and use it to grind up whole coffee beans?
They also took my comments for Kitchenaid to make a coffee grinder attachment for this unit. Since the Kitchenaid stand mixer has a powerful motor this would be a great add-on attachment for the unit.
@@dhansel4835 D Hansel, I would love to see a coffee grinder for the KitchenAid mixer 😍 You are right, the motor would work well for grinding coffee beans. We'll see 🤞
How do you find the Satin Copper KA? does it burnish at all or does the clear coat protect it well?
if one partially freezes the meat before grinding as suggested, is it okay to freeze the burger patties or sausages after creating them? I know it is not a good idea to re-freeze raw meat.
Thanks.
Holly Blaney no issues. And honestly, you can refreeze raw meat that’s been properly thawed and handled without issue. GugaFoods does a video on that, you can look it up.
I don't know why my meat does not come smoothly. Can please give me some ideas of how to go about it? Like how cold should the meat be? How long should I keep the meat in the freezer? I am really frustrated.
Hey florenceugboko, here are a few things you can try:
- put your cubed meat into the freezer for around 30-45 minutes to were the meat is partially frozen on the outside (but not fully frozen).
- put the meat grinder itself into the freezer for 30 minutes to get it cold as well.
- some meats are naturally more mushy like high-fat content cuts of beef and poultry. Having theses kinds of meat semi-frozen will help them come out smoothly.
-work quickly - the ginder will start to heat up as it is working and your meat will start to come to room
temperature quickly as well making for mushy meat coming from the grinder.

Can you use this attachment for grinding berries and grapes. To make juice?
Richard, the grinder is for sure powerful enough to handle ingredients like that, but it sounds like it would be a hot pulpy mess and not very efficient. KitchenAid does have a fruit and veggie strainer that may be helpful: evkitch.com/3nUsrOY - - - But if you want full juice, a dedicated juicer would be the best option: evkitch.com/32PUtXv - - - I hope this helps!
I'm gonna surprise my boyfriend with this soon.
can you grind parmigiana cheese block and what disk thanks
Hi, Mike Sideri! Using a fine grinder plate, it is possible to grind cheese in this meat grinder. Though as the name suggests, the main purpose of this attachment is to grind meat. Hope that helps! Good luck!
Can you grind nuts using the small plate?
Yes! That would work great
my 32mm collagen casing doesn't fit well on the larger stuffer. Any tips for getting the collagen into the larger stuffer properly?
The plastic one is for the birds.
my plastic grinder the collar brock the fisted year
Does blood get back into the machine? Apparently it does with 3rd in party grinders and I don't see the difference here
MR G, I'm not sure on blood, but any other meat or juices I haven't noticed get into the interior of the mixer from our use!
Does it work on cooked meat? I like very fine chopped meat in my Bolognese.
Yes it does! That would be a perfect use for the food grinder. You can also run veggies through it when grinding meat for meatballs or hard cheeses like parmesean to crumble it. I hope this helps! Find the grinder here: evkitch.com/2OPnMQV
should you put the grinder in the freezer for a while before you use it?
Sdarms111 Doug , you can do this - we prefer to put the meat we're going to grind into the freezer versus the whole grinder itself. I hope this helps!
@@EverythingKitchens Thank you for your reply... I went ahead and did both, it worked fantastic! Made homemade Salisbury steaks... phenominal!

Can this machine also grind yuca??
Hello, I just bought one and wanted to know if there is a bigger plate/coarse than the large one that came with it. I need a bigger coarse of meat. Any specific bigger plate I need to buy? Thanks
Hello, which grinding plate should I use to make steak tartare? Thank you!!
Hey Myriam, I would use the largest hole grinding plate for steak tartare. If the pieces are too large after that, consider hand chopping after that to get the exact consistency you are looking for. I hope this helps!
Great demo!
Great video chef. It is quite helpful. My kit came with the different grinding plates and also 3 different blades (a single, a double, and a 4 sided like you used in the video). I get the different grind plates, but when do I use the different blades? Is it smaller grind = more blades? Thanks for your help.
Hi milehiscott, I'm not sure which bundle you purchased - could you post a link of what you purchased?
You forgot to mention that it is made of aluminum not stainless steel. Is not dishwasher safe and will fade and pit with hot water.
Thanks so much for that info, I think I'll order the plastic.
I have both the plastic and just got the metal one last week
I used warm water with a %10 bleach solution to sterilize mine, it's what restaurants use, and haven't had a problem with it
the plastic sort of deformed in the dishwasher, it was still usable, but I hate plastic anything so getting the metal one was a nice upgrade for me
almost none of the attachments for kitchenaid are dishwasher safe ( I made the mistake of putting the whisk and butterfly attachments in the dishwasher and ruined their finish, they still work, but they look horrid!)
@@misscndnwoman2177 The plastic one is worthless for anything other than very soft cuts of beef and chicken. Pork shoulder for sausage is out of the question.
@@Bluebelle51 I have a stainless steel whisk for my 7 qt and it is dishwasher safe. I plan on buying stainless flat beater and dough hook.
Jeez! Why on earth would they make it in aluminum. And the info was so hard to find. Its not even on their website. Thank you for thid
I purchased my kitchen-aid in 1995, if I buy the meat grinder attachment today, will it fit my model?
Mary, yes! It will fit :) We can ship your KitchenAid Metal Food Grinder Attachment for free: evkitch.com/2OPnMQV
Any tips to getting the attachment apart after use? I made sausage with my new attachment and now can’t get the cap off 😕
Hmm... maybe try running under some hot water for a couple of minutes? That helps me when I can't get the lid off of jars. Hot water may help the metal expand.
"my name is :chef Austin"🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Awesome man.
And stuffing sausage, can you just put it straight into the casing without running it thru twice?
Hi Andrew, you are not required to run the meat through twice to make sausage - we did this to make a finer texture sausage in the end. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions.
For the sausage, do you need to grind it twice?
It is recommended to grind sausage twice, using the smaller hole pattern plate. Most sausage has a denser, finer, more consistent texture than ground burger meat (where you want some gaps to hold moisture, fat, juices, etc).
Is it strong and good because I chill the meat before grinding it in my panasonic grinder ?
Faida, yes - you can run chilled partially-frozen meat through this grinder. I hope this helps!
Excellent video. Thanks for this.
I just purchased one and will be making sausage with it very soon. Thank you for the very informative vid.
Glad we could help!
Will this work for hard vegetables like raw green bananas?
Yes! It would work perfect for hard veggies like green banana.
Can it be used for cookie dough?
David, we haven't tried it for cookie dough, but its definitely powerful enough for cookie dough ingredients! At this time there are no "spritz cookie" plates for the grinder if that is the kind of cookie you are referring to.
Do you have to grind the meat then run it through the sausage stuffer afterwards? Can't you just grind and go right into the sausage casing?
Patrick, you'll need to grind at least once first then use the sausage stuffer plate and tubes specifically for making sausage links. I hope this helps!
Just ordered today!!!
T Van, I hope you love it as much as I did! -Chef Austin 👨🍳
Was really wanting you to also show how to assemble the food grinder.
Zina Tabor, check out this additional video of the KitchenAid Metal Meat Grinder: ruclips.net/video/oxA1UaN59IE/видео.html this video has more footage of the machine being assembled. I hope this helps! -Chef Austin 👨🍳
Is that all metal or metal plates? The latter does not last and usually when you start to notice you’ve probably eaten a bit of it long ago as they e been flaking unnoticed.
