    Wow...I had a NC700x DCT and loved it. I felt it was a great 45 mph bike for tooling the back roads. That was because of engine vibration mostly. You can ride at any speed, but, two speeds 45 and then 75 ish it is smooth enough. The drivetrain between your 1100 and my 700 are vastly different so I will say with a grain of salt that I just put it in manual with the switch on the right bar cluster and pick a gear as I would on a manual. City driving is GREAT, period. For cruising back road twisties at 50 the 700 was a blast. I raced dirt bikes. I had one of the first Husky 360 automatics way back when. It was traction control for dirt bikes! Auto shift up on muddy hills was crazy good. I have also ridden a Aprilla Mana quite a bit, an 850cc 8 speed automatic. I get the "free wheeling/no clutch" thing you are talking about at low speed. I learned to hold some throttle on and drag the brakes to compensate. An automatic has worked for me in many situations. They are heavier though...

    I don't care one way or another but I love to clutch and shift. My company bought new trucks this year and we were forced to buy automatics or pay an extra $10,000 fee per truck to get a standard 10 speed manual. I had way more control with a manual transmission especially in slippery conditions in mud and snow making deliveries to jobsites. I think the automatics are great for people who need them or want them I just don't want to be forced to buy one eventually. I really feel like I work harder driving the automatic truck working around all the extra technology. Some new trucks see dark spots in the road or guardrails on curves and randomly lock up the breaks and it really gets your attention.

      @@geraldburmeister9637 I’m a truck driver who made a living hauling heavy equipment and cut my teeth on a 5 and 4. I have no problem with dual clutch transmissions after trying one. In this high tech world the only outstanding feature of a manual clutch is that it makes a great theft deterrent. I also like driving a manual clutch but realize they are almost only available on bikes.

    Sorry to hear about your problems. Sounds to me though you don’t have much riding experience. I’ve been riding since 1968 and tried one on a VFR. I thought it was actually wonderful. I also know that it is a preference with the Gold Wing riders which in my area you have to shell out 35-38k. If I were to buy a new bike it would have DCT.

    There is a RUclips video counting down most sold 2024 motorcycle models in the USA. The 2nd most sold model is the Rebel 1100. Most Rebel 1100's are DCT's. I don't think I will have a problem selling my DCT in light of that demand. New riders and old riders, who don't care if it is manual or not, being the market. DCT Africa Twins and Honda Goldwings are pretty popular with all kinds of riders.
    Quick shifters are huge amongst hyper sports. They like the speed advantage of a Quick shifter. I don't see the DCT as anything different from a Quick Shifter except for finger triggers instead of a foot lever.

      "it has too much torque to go slow" is a problem? I love the DCT and wish it was a 10 speed (probably weigh 30Kg) for fuel economy whilst touring. it might get pretty wide too! But still two shafts switching back and forth. #Engineering

      @@thepadonthepondbythescum I am a bit confused by the video - the complaint of being unable to go slow is while riding in 6th gear? I haven't owned a DCT model myself, but my basic knowledge tells me that you can force it into a lower gear and lower speed if you want to. Am I wrong or is the argument provided completely unfounded? It's not like I ride around town doing 15 mph on a manual bike in 6th gear either.

    I have my 1100 DCT since Nov. 2023 and close to 14K km under the hood. I had none of the presented issues. It is as if you refer to a completely different bike.
    if the bike stalls by itself, there must be a mechanical or electronical failure in the mix. Same applies also for the inability to go slower than 30 mph. i would have had this issue presented to your Honda dealer...

  • @lstavenhagen
    @lstavenhagen 14 дней назад +2

    Agree on the compromises of the DCT (I have an Africa Twin DCT). The biggest drawback generally is that you can't manually disengage the engine from the driveline. Once engaged, it's locked to the rear wheel and there's nothing you can do about it until you lurch to a stop at a light, etc. Also, lots of low speed maneuvering will smoke the clutches and it's a non-warranty repair by Honda.
    On the other hand, it's most important advantage is the reduction in "pilot workload". This is a huge safety feature, relieving the rider of the task of managing the engine. This is no small advantage, as this type of automation is a well known life-saver in aviation (eg. autopilots, etc.). it can also save your bacon in high workload situations in, say, crazy big city traffic or an interstate where all the SUVs are literally trying to end your life. So to me, the advantages outweigh the drawbacks.
    Interesting point about resale, though. I'm going to sell my AT (for other reasons, not the DCT) and so I will expect some difficulty moving it because of the DCT...

      @SimonRiley752 13 дней назад +1

      You first paragraph is not true. Honda will 100% warranty it. The issue I am sure you're bringing up is one "content creator" who intentionally blew out his DCT and Honda refused to honor it because they could tell it was customer abuse. Stop lying.

    Apart from the DCT, the Rebel is industrial-strength ugly. Clearly that's by intent. Also I can't understand why an 1100cc motorcycle can't go over 100 mph. It bothers me that Honda chose to use a speed limiter to deal with the high-speed instability issue, instead of just fixing the problem. Where's all that engineering talent that Honda is so widely respected for? I guess I just don't get the cruiser mindset.

    I don’t think this is a DCT issue, rebels are more of cruiser/sports bike, he didn’t know what he was buying, lack of experience and it being a 1100, might been overwhelming. That engine has punch. There different types of bikes for different people and that one may not be for him and that what’s he’s finding out. But being in 5th gear at slow speeds and not understanding why it not slowing down the way you want it to, that’s lack understanding, not the bike. I would be frustrated though if I spent the money on the bike, finding out it just wasn’t for me and having hard time selling it, I get that. I never been on a dct, but from what I’ve seen over the years this review most savage 🤣🤣🤣.

    Try the new e-clutch, you still have a clutch and can regain that low-speed control. That drives so well, but I only know of the CB650R and CBR650R that support it. I hope it becomes the winning Honda solution.

    • @peterwilson8039
      @peterwilson8039 13 дней назад +1

      Personally, while I think the DCT and the e-clutch are technically cool, I would never want to own a motorcycle that had either. I like using the clutch and shifting gears. I've been doing it for over half a century. I think it's sad that if I wanted to buy the Honda 650 four-cylinder motorcycle in the U.S. I would have to buy it with an e-clutch. If it's something that you want, that's cool for you, but what's wrong with me having the option to get what I want?

    • @ProphetC2
      @ProphetC2 13 дней назад

      @peterwilson8039 Dude, the e-clutch has a normal clutch. There's a mechanical and secondary electronic clutch. The e-clutch is to avoid stalling and automatic shift, but you can engage the mechanical clutch through the lever, as always.
      The transmission is manual, but the e-clutch adds that second source of engagement, right where the cable you pull with the lever enters the transmission. A DCT is an automatic transmission by design.

    • @peterwilson8039

      @peterwilson8039 That should add about a cellphone of weight, a few bucks in BOM, a little bit of mechanical complexity. I don't think anybody is looking up close to the transmission case, it's just a little bump on top of it.
      Have you seen it from the outside and how it works inside? It's accessibility, they want to reach more customers, new customers, while still getting the hang of a manual.
