Okay, so I am going to date myself, but I remember when he started his project. Back then ( the late 70’s and 80’s) there was a “REAL” threat of nuclear warfare. His dream of saving as many as he could, was, of course, “REAL”. Sadly “One Man” could only do so much. I wonder now if anyone has unlocked that entrance recently and encountered much water and rust….

I think what he did was really cool. It was dirty and old, but he is one guy who started this in the 70s. It also brought up an interesting point that there isn't anything prepared for the average citizen in case of a nuclear disaster. Good for him.

I actually remember seeing the videos on TV from when he was burying the school buses to build it. Glad he didn't need it in his lifetime. Sadly, most personal mega-projects just end up rusting away like this one. He obviously lost the energy to even tote his supplies down the incline after a time and just piled then near the entrance.

I'll bet the structure remains for centuries. The buses are simply a mold for the two foot thick concrete shell around them. They probably will not rust because there's no Oxygen on the concrete side, but even if they actually do rust away, the concrete will remain.
And they are tubular shaped ...the strongest structure possible.
It's sort of like a manmade honeycombed cave.
As long as they thought of sufficient ventilation, it should be safe haven if ever needed.

Not sure why people are calling him wacky... Do you think a nuclear Holocaust is impossible?
This was a Fun project, I would also love the opportunity to design a bunker like this. So much fun to try and think about everything it needs and what could go wrong.
And so it's like a hobby, but with real world effects in case something actually does happen. And instead of doing it only for himself, he decided to try and prepare for his whole town.
You don't hear about most bunkers because they are for private use, but this man decided to try and make a public one. It's not crazy, or wako, and it's a very kind undertaking.
Did he over reach? A little, the place does seam to be more than he can handle now. But so what, it's still incredible. And while it's not perfect, it does give people a better chance of staying alive on this earth. So right on.👍
Hopefully one day the government will have shelters built for everyone like they do in Switzerland. Or at least a majority. And we can all feel a little safer about the world's crazy unpredictable behavior.

The only saving grace of this shelter is that it drains the water build up to a nearby ravine but of course that drainage is limited. It would've been better to build above grade and bury the structures in gravel, then clay and finally dirt. Were I so obsessed to build such a large shelter, I would use Quonset huts and spray the metal with concrete in much the same way that swimming pools are made. The alkaline environment of the cement should protect the steel from corrosion for maybe a hundred years and of course rebar can be added to the cement/concrete (there are epoxy coated rebar as well as fibreglass rebar to resist corrosion, the hut could also be painted with epoxy paints first). The huts would give way more headroom and you know that the claustrophobic conditions of a shelter will already be quite harmful. Even to children, those school bus structures would be oppressive.

    • @johnwang9914
      @johnwang9914 7 месяцев назад +1

@@mclovinfuddpucker Did you not read that I specifically said "Were I so obsessed to build such a shelter". I specifically said I wasn't inclined to waste my time and resources on building such a shelter. I was simply pointing out that spraying a metal Quonset hut with concrete in the same fashion that an in ground swimming pool and building above grade hence piling up a hill to ensure drainage rather than underground might be better than burying school bus husks and looking for a site with a ravine to drain an underground structure to. A Quonset hut provides more headroom and likely as inexpensive if not more so than multiple school bus husks, building above ground is more likely to avoid being inundated with water as it would be above ground water levels and would allow the layers of ground coverings to be layered for their specific properties allowing more freedom in selecting a site. I'm free to point out other methods without being mad enough to build such a shelter and if you do want examples, in ground swimming pools would be practical examples of the construction methods I'm speaking of in terms of spray coated concrete and military armament bunkers would be examples of building the structure above ground and just burying the structures and several of those have been converted into fallout bunkers to sell to "preppers".

@@mclovinfuddpucker others do not possess the same LIkes as i. I prefer a basement, even though I own a Penthouse condo in Toronto, that6 heats up without the need of a heater.
This is January. and yet, lolol by the end of tomorrow there will be a warm weather front.
Toronto used to set up the out door ice rinks by end of January. Not this year. clearly there is a hotter than normal time going ON.
humans need to adjust to the weather. Saudis have agreed to pump less oil. But the wild fires, the volcanoes, and the many fueled vehicles put more into the wrong direction.
Look, 450 less albertans died due to the covid than to the german Kaiser (ww1). but no body seems to care about those 5120 deaths
To the dead, they r dead, there is no 2nd chance.
Hey is 4 horses, and then the americans send more of their ignorant kids overseas, all while exporting 2 mn+ jobs, at the same time as the 2 loser wars.
Problems answers questions when someone handles all 3 of them, that will be a nice day.
God Bless and happy hot january above zero is hot for january
