Oh, then you can enjoy hours listening to the many, many versions of this beautiful song/poem.
This version is in what I would call Irish Folk tradition.
But it really is very English 😉

What a nice comment to make, authentic me. The song comes from so long before you were born but it is nice that you can appreciate what it means. Best wishes from a very old British soldier. I love your people.

@@abocas There were so many brilliant Irish men and women who did an excellent service in the Army in the old days of the British Empire, especially in British India and Burma. So, Irish Folk tradition and 'very English': do you honestly believe there was a big difference ??

They blessed my family several times at Folklore Village in Wisconsin! Was an annual pilgrimage for us from Laclu, Ontario. They continue to be my conduit to tradition, purity and innocence. I remain grateful. Thank you John and Tony : ) You will forever be the perfect pairing.

@@jackgrant7356 It does (likely) contain some of the pagan customs which the Christians co-opted. I doubt it was an actual pagan song.

As an anthropologist I get such a kick out of their work. Your next chance to speak to John tell him there's still people out there playing them daily, even if its just me!

Brilliant. Had a nice evening with him and a couple people many years ago at Pinewoods sharing my bottle of single malt. By about 3am he was convinced I was a "scholar and a gentleman." I really miss the Brattleboro area, a town I learned about when attending my first Morris Ale and moved to 6 months later.

sorry, what about the colonial bullshit in this song? Like, and I'm sorry, the whole nostalgic pile about the best is like the worst and there ain't no ten commandment east of suez? This is a rapey, nasty old song! It's right up there with the old portuguese saying, there are no sins south of the equator! I'm dismayed to see Gen Z lapping it up. I guess the world hasn't changed as much as I'd hoped...
