Emo Phillips had a whole bit about what he called "Joke Grenades". They were jokes that took a second for the audience to put together. Then he'd do a callback where he would tell a joke like that, then in the pause he'd act out pulling a grenade pin and throwing the grenade into the audience. It was a great bit.

What about somebody like Lenny Bruce? I just finished watching some of his stuff and everything seems to be think-jokes. In a later show, after he'd been arrested a bunch of times, he pulls out his legal papers and starts reading them on stage, as part of his act. I was thinking, "how is he gonna set up a target assumption, reinterpretation and punch with this stuff?"

By those day, he didn't. When he was on his game he made us think, but his jokes still got an instant response.
