The way our government describes China's actions are biased and unfair. There's a double standard in the terminology used to describe similar actions taken by different countries. For example, when we devalue our currency, it's referred to as "quantitative easing," but when China does the same thing, it's labeled as "currency manipulation." This implies a negative connotation when the action is performed by China, even though it's essentially the same policy. Similarly, when discussing cameras in public spaces, we use the term "security cameras" to describe our own, while we call China's cameras "surveillance cameras." This implies that China's cameras are used for more invasive or nefarious purposes, even though both countries likely use these cameras for similar reasons, such as crime prevention and public safety.

Since you walk from Xidan station, that means you literally are walking through the front door of "white house" or “10 Downing Street” of China,on your way to the forbidden city. That's why the security is so important in this direction.

The German Chancellor is visiting Beijing these days. Beijing is the capital, so inspections are relatively strict. Normally there would not be so many inspections. You must book one day in advance to go to the Forbidden City because there are too many tourists. You can go to the Great Wall on the same day without making a reservation. Don't be afraid of surveillance, it deters crime. And the most surveillance in the world is in London, not Beijing. But what is ridiculous is that the BBC does not mind surveillance in London, but criticizes surveillance in China. You don’t need to buy a ticket when taking the subway, just scan the ALIPAY bus code.

Why do we emphasize "surveillance"? But it's just a camera, it only records video. If there is no safety problem, the video will not be seen by anyone. If someone loses something, or there is a fight or someone is injured, the police have the right to check the video to quickly find the criminal. This is an important reason why China is so safe

To visit the Forbidden City, reservations are required because the number of visitors is extremely high, especially during holidays. As for walking on Chang'an Avenue in front of Tiananmen, the security is very strict because it is the center of power in China, and there have been terrorist attacks in the past. The security department ensures the safety of national leaders, government agencies, and the public, which is why the security there is exceptionally tight.

A group of German diplomats and businessmen were visiting China then. Yes, you need to book a visit to Tiananmen Square. But you could make a detour to Qianmen and Wangfujing Street. There is plenty to visit/see in Beijing!

For the reservations part, in most Chinese museums, foreigners can book tickets (most museum are free) at the ticket office using their passport without needing to book in advance. However, for popular attractions like the Forbidden City and some larger museums, due to high visitor numbers, tickets must be booked online at least 7 days in advance. Usually foreigners can email the office 1 or 2 day in advance to make a booking, which is a convenient option for those without a Chinese ID.

Went to Univ Studios, GWall Badaling by hi speed train, Temple of Heaven, Shichahai, Old imperial Palace, Beihai Pk, Summer Palace, Qianmen St. (of course), Tiananmen Sq., etc. Rented Meituan bikes to explore BJ. Waited 5 hours for roast duck at Peking Chamber (Si ji min fu) despite registering on their online waiting APP at 3pm. Much colder weather in March than shown in this video but overall, it was perfect for us, and we had a wonderful time and enjoy this great city. Will be back again soon.

Beijing's air pollution control began in 2013 and till today. Prior to this, the government made several brief effort to control air pollution in 1998, 2005 and 2007-2008. I guess that was the time when Beth first came to China. At that time, the pollution was severe, with over 150 days of heavy pollution each year, and the sky was a murky yellow, similar to the industrial development era of Los Angeles and London in the last century. Beijing pressed ahead with a multiyear, $100 billion effort to clean its air. The authorities clamped down on factories, forced old vehicles off the road and shifted from coal to natural gas. And also spent more then 60 years planting trees in the northwest to combat sandstorms.

In fact, the Tiananmen building was rebuilt in 1970, and there is a reconstruction mark on the back of the second floor of the building.

Hi Dan and Beth, Biggest welcome to China! Try to ignore the mean comments below your videos, there are always people who are not happy with their life. There is nothing wrong with being honest. I hope you enjoy the rest of your time in China. It's a beautiful country and with lovely people in general. I brought my friends from London to China for a short vacation early this month, we were all really enjoyed the time there and planning to come back to explore more, take it easy and enjoy!

The German Chancellor was there, and that area has some of the most important buildings in China. In other areas of China, no one would bother you with passport check.

21:58 tiananmen square is open to public. The booking requirement is for flow control to avoid overcrowding or stampede. It's a bit inconvenient for foreigners. The government is work on it to make it easier. Next time you may ask the hotel staff book it for you.

A fun fact is that when youre walking down the pavement, the presidential residence is on your left, right behind the red wall. I guess you must walked by its entrance when heading to the forbidden city. Thats the reason why for a higher level of security near that area.

I can‘t believe that you chose to walk all the time instead of unlocking the shared bicycles.😂 Why don't you take this adventure? It would relieve your leg's work. 😂Maybe you thought China was a small country or Beijing was a small city.

When I used them in China you had to register, has that changed? In some places you needed a Chinese ID card to use them as well (in a different city). I had to get a friend to register for me. Many apps that are friendly for Chinese are not set up for foreigners.

Maybe you have left Beijing by now. However, it is recommended to choose a hotel closer to the city center when you come to Beijing next time. This way you won't be too tired when you visit Beijing's attractions. Beijing is too big.
    Welcome to Beijing again!
