  • Shanda Vander Ark is accused of severely abusing her teenage son with special needs, who was in an ice bath for 9 hours before he was declared dead.
Shanda Vander Ark, 43, is facing first-degree murder and child abuse charges for the death of her 15-year-old son, Timothy Ferguson, who police found dead and severely malnourished inside the family’s home. Timothy’s older brother Paul, 20, had also been charged days after his mom’s arrest. Together, Vander Ark and her son Paul are accused of a sinister pattern of abuse that may have lasted for years.

Presumption of guilt is not what this country is about- you need evidence to send CPS. I really hope you never bring the bad karma you’re spouting down on your family…. CPS likes to lie.

My daughter is homeschooled. We had an initial visit from the local authority but that’s all. I wish that they would visit more often and offer assistance. I don’t want my daughter to be under achieving and would appreciate it if we could get some sort of indication that she is doing ok. I think she is doing well and is in line with kids of her age but it would be nice to be assured of that.
Having said all of that, I cannot begin to imagine what the poor boy went through. How could anyone subject their child to such depravity. I feel sick to think of what happened to him at the hands of the woman who birthed him, and his own brother too. May he now rest in peace, and may she rot.

by that logic all households that have children too young to attend schools should receive visits from the authorities. OH, and don't forget they need to be check in on in the summer when school is out too bc no parent can't be trusted with their kids. Also, in case you missed it there are plenty of kids who are abused under the watchful eyes of schools so why are you only concerned about homeschool kids? Why not have the state go to all homes and check in? Before, you say if you aren't doing anything wrong then you don't have anything to worry about so why not agree to allow them into your home if it saves children....given up personal rights and freedoms to the government never ends well for anyone, the amount of man power needed to do that would cost the already stretched CPS workers resources to help the kids who are actually in need. there is a difference between privacy and hiding wrong-doing.

I watch it a Brazilian guy that has a child like that. He is a teen now, but this family does everything for him. His father goes around doing everything he can, with timing just for his routine not to be disturbed. Every single day he wakes at the same time, he has a routine. I cry many times to see him telling his father how much he loves him. And his father says the same. Of course they are very wealthy, but some people hide an autistic child, but if you can love them, they will love back. He can speak, not as clearly as us, but he can.

My 3 yr old grandchild weighs 30 lbs so 69 lbs for a 15 yr old is unfathomable. I have been obsessed and eerily fascinated by this case. I keep trying to find something that I missed. I keep listening for a detail and I didn’t hear before. I guess I want to find a rationale and there isn’t one. It’s hard for me to get in my head that someone starved a child and chained him up in the basement. When I’ve heard of child starvation in the past, Ive seen pictures of the home and there’s no food in sight. This fools house was full of food. She needs to suffer the same, if not worse fate. You have to be pure evil to do something like this. 😢😢

This poor kid was less than half that weight. Obviously not every kid is the same weight at that age, but I'm pretty sure the standard male weight at 15 is still double what he weighed at death. Disgusting.
How she can argue both "hunger strike" and "he was stealing food" is beyond me.

She says her memory of all incriminating things is lost, supposedly due to PTSD (she can't remember the bad things she did for over six months or any of the hundreds of incriminating text messages she sent, which is not how PTSD works) but can suddenly remember when she needs to put all the blame on her older son, who participated in the torture of this child at her bidding-saying that it was his idea to put the hot sauce on Timothy's private parts-for example. She needs to be in prison and never see the light of day. This story is beyond disgusting.

So the jury had to disregard her 1st response and in recess the defense, the state, and judge agreed for the question to be rephrased in front of the jury and she responded with a yes or no in order to not open up the line of questioning that her last response would have done.

Part of being an adult with a disability in this country is seeing a case of child abuse/torture/murder and knowing instantly that that child was also disabled. Judges and juries often let these parents off with a slap on the wrist, sometimes even calling murders like this "mercy killings" and expressing sympathy for the parent from the bench. People who seem shocked by these crimes have no idea how horrible society is to disabled children.

Paul only came to her a year before Timothy's death and came with a bag of medications for his mental health issues that she didn't refill because she didn't have time to take him to the dr. Same with Timothy... She said the hot sauce was pauls idea so she ordered reaper sauce because he liked hot sauce as akid and when she was pregnant so regular hot sauce wouldn't do...She is throwing her older son, who has reactive attachment disorder and who just wanted her approval, son under the bus not saying he's innocent but he wouldn't have been involved if she hadn't had wanted him to... I call bs on the "patterns of abuse!" I was severely abused as a child by an alcoholic, drug head parent! I became a nusre and raised 4 wonderful children who now claim they had a great childhood and say I was a wonderful mother! Once you are out of an abusive situation it's up to YOU to choose your path in life! Being put through that was utterly horrific, but it doesn't mean I have to let that define who I am as an adult or how I treated my children.

This woman is a monster. I do believe that families need more support; but you can hear the resentment, the raw anger in her messages. She had an urge to control and punish that reaches the level of evil. This must not be tolerated. This must be resoundingly decried, reviled. This was a young man who had absolutely no power, no way to advocate for himself. He was already battling disability, but to be starved, tormented and tortured by the person or people upon who you must rely for your every need, for the crime of eating. Disgusting. Her other son however, could have stood up to her and didn’t. He is complicit.

This makes me so angry and sick to my stomach I have two sons with autism how disgusting and evil can you get to torture your own children. This 15 year old boy was 69 pounds when he died and she said on the stand it just runs in my family we all are a very skinny family then the prosecution shows her the photos of her dead son at 69 pounds and she couldn't handle that she started throwing up. This women needs to get food taken away in jail to see how it feels make her lay in bed with ice this women was so obsessed with torturing this poor child while she's at work sending messages repeatedly what's he doing what's he eating I know he snuck food make him run up there stairs make him take am ice bath make him sleep in the garage with his clothes off I don't even know how she worked with all the time she spent texting about what is her son up too.

Ok. So here’s a thought… she was only able to have supervised visits per Oklahoma DHS. Yet the father gave the child back to the mother that moved to Michigan. And the father ended up en Florida. This should become a Federal case charging the father with endangering the child by surrendering the child to a parent that’s only supposed to have supervised visits. He should be held accountable too.
Or if the child was a ward of Oklahoma and the father disregarded the Oklahoma court rulings then Oklahoma should be able to extradite him back and press charges. There’s no accountability on his part

I've always thought it the strangest thing to say a child is "stealing" food. Even if they were told not to have it now, it's just a strange word to use - stealing - about necessary household items - especially considering a parent has a duty to provide them 🤷🏻‍♀️

You ask where this comes from, it comes from the pit of hell - for only a demonic individual could be okay with treating anyone like this... Oklahoma child protective services has the answers.
"They obviously felt at some point there was a basis to at least state that her rights should have been terminated, but for whatever reason, they decided not to go forward."
    “For whatever reason.”
There needs to be an investigation into exactly what that reason was.

Wish you had the full hearings of this case! It’s just bizarre how much this woman cannot seem to remember about her involvement in this torture of her own son! Very selective memory she blames on PTSD of her husband having a stroke even though she wasn’t around him when he had the stroke! Just unbelievable! Her son remembered pretty much everything & I can see how he was manipulated by his mother.

If you want an idea what Timothy Ferguson looked like at his death, you only need to look at photos from released prisoners from Dachau during the Holocaust. The average male prison weighed around 66 lbs. Timothy died 3 lbs heavier. He not only starved, he was dehydrated and had hypothermia from the ice baths his mom gave him in the hours before he died. The text messages between Shanda and Paul show how her torture of her own son was continuous. May Timothy be graced with the peace his mother refused to allow him.

Why did Tim's father send him to live with her knowing that she had a supposed history of child neglect - the courts never approved of Tim going to live with his mother - Shouldn't the father also be held accountable - I can't imagine having such hatred for a child - she never sought help,, this was worse than neglect - it was torture - I believe Paul the older brother was neglected also - he was thin and his teeth looked to be in poor condition. I hope more comes out about this whole family and her past marriage - my heart breaks for the suffering Tim endured. If you think a child might be neglected please report it.
