- Traveling with firearms is a very simple but misunderstood. Here is the way I do it. Still look at the rules and regulations associated with your airline and TSA.

I went from MCI to BWI with 3 complete AR lowers and five loaded 20 RD P mags a couple weeks ago, bagging agent said don't stray too far and listen if TSA called my name. I waited 20 and then went and had an overpriced beer, made my flight, got my shit no issue. First time transporting guns was a breeze. Great tips mate!
Great video, thank you for doing it.
Once my luggage with the guns goes back, I usually wait until either the TSA guy gives me a thumbs up (they may do that if asked), or about 20 minutes. That way, if they do need to open the case, I am not through security already.
I have had them ask me for keys to open the case. I asked, politely, if they could bring it to the counter. They did that, and opened the case in front of me. They just wanted to ooh and aah over the items, but whatever.
I always travel with some extra locks in case the ones on there are cut.
Finally, it is all about YMMV. Depends on the location, the TSA agents, and in some cases, what mood they are in. Treat them nice, be respectful, and you will be just fine.
Former FLL airport operations guy here. If you arrive early enough and ask for TSA to check it in front of you they will take you to a examining area. Sometimes the airline “Spirit” doesn’t give a crap about you and they’ll just throw it on the belt. Let me know if you want, I can give you the TSA Coordination Center’s primary phone number for FLL and they should be able to help you with that issue.
Dude, I appreciate that. Please email me jon@kinetic-consulting.net
Just sent you an email. Hope the situation changes for you. I was very lucky working there so TSA and most of the airline staff knew me so flying with firearms was never an issue.
This is incredibly helpful
A tip I learned was to put funky color (not black or white) zip ties through the padlock holes. If you are worried that someone could pick your lock, take your stuff, and then put the lock back on, the zip tie would need to be cut and the chances of them having a funky color zip tie (pink, neon green, etc) is pretty low.
This also serves as a quick check as your case is coming off the conveyor belt. If you see the bright colors from your zip ties, chances are your stuff was not tampered with.
Not a bad idea but one can use a shim to open a zip tie. Crazy glue the zip tie lock?
Absolutely. However the point of the zip ties isn't really for security but rather a quick check coming off the belt. If you are worried about that scenario, you could do a quick check of the case before leaving.
Great video, but I would like to make some suggestions based on my own experience:
1.) Check your airline's policy online. Each airline has slight variations in their firearms policy as well as TSA procedures and they do change. Follow them to the letter. Airport personnel are trained to procedure and by following them, you minimize hassle on both sides. Like it or not, TSA is often not any better trained on firearms than airline employees and they WILL cause you to miss your flight and may contact law enforcement if they find undeclared ammo or things outside procedure or regulations.
2.) Loaded mags are a gray area. Some airlines are OK with loaded mags, some not, so I fly with unloaded mags and my ammo inside my gun case. I did it your way until I arrived somewhere with a bag full of loose ammo because the boxes got smashed. TSA can pull and hold your bags if you have loose ammo. Thankfully this did not happen to me. If I need more than a few boxes of ammo or more than will fit in my case, I just find somewhere local to my destination (local gun store, class sponsor, etc) and ship it ahead of time. It's not worth it to get across the country only to be notified that my bag wasn't allowed to fly because I had undeclared ammo or was over the number of rounds permitted.
3.) Allow an extra hour if you're flying with a firearm. I waited for 45 minutes in the security screening line and was almost through security when I was asked to open my gun case for inspection. They would not allow me to return to my place in line nor offer an expedited screening, so I had to start all over again and almost missed my flight.
4.) DON'T cover your weapon case with firearm-related stickers that advertise you have a firearm. I have one case covered in stickers that I use around the house and when I drive, but my travel case has nothing on the outside. If you want to get crafty, I guess you could put something related to sports or music on the outside.
If all the above seems like a hassle and an infringement on your rights........it is. That's why I drive as much as possible. I find that even flying I still dedicate a day to travel anyway.
Good luck and stay safe.
Years ago flying out of Orlando Airport (MCO) TSA had their head up their ass. They wouldn't allow loaded mags, or empty mags inserted and the slide had to be locked back. When I flew back into Orlando, there were a few rifle cases on the conveyor belt to the general public and was clearly tagged by TSA, I had to go pick mine up as it had multiple handguns in a 1510 pelican case and was heavy. This is the only reason why I believe my case didn't make it to the conveyor belt.
Sucks that every airport makes up their own rules.
@@KineticConsulting absolutely does, what really blew my mind was rifle cases on the conveyor belts with regular luggage as any one could've picked them up and walked off
@@vicfox101 exactly.
What a great block . Thanks for posting
Helpful, thanks for sharing! Would just add to make sure the destination state or even a stopover state is OK with the mag capacity/AR/CCW etc...some states can give passengers a really hard legal time.
Good point
I’m flying this weekend, thanks for the info!
Keep the videos coming man. Always good stuff.
Dude! I flew out of FLL. The first time ever I had TSA want to open my case not in front of me. After much debate and polite conversation with the supervisor I gave them the keys. Didn’t want to miss the flight but screw FLL. I love the airports that take me back from n the room with TSA. Great video!
Everyone is watching for that bag now at the airports... lol
Great video man thank you for this. Really good information.
I don't know about FLL, but at IAH I always have to check firearms at gate B because that's where the TSA screening is. If I check in at another terminal, they'll have to cut my locks off or page me to go open my case. You might be able to check in at a different terminal and not have to give up your keys and trust that they lock everything back up correctly.
thank you
I caught that O'Hare arched terminal and tag
I've had good luck with the bang box for ammo. It keeps things nice and small.
I had one airline agent in MCO last time going to SHOT give me a hard time over my pistol being in a soft case within the hard case but, after explaining the hard case is already meeting the requirement they let me go.
Only thing I noticed is, it's hit or miss with where your luggage ends up on the other side whether in the side office or on the belt. Always gives me anxiety.
Those pelican 1615s are nice, i can get almost 2 weeks of clothes, duty belt, baton etc., vest, couple hundred rounds of ammo and still not be overweight.
Yeah the bangboxes work but have to be in the hard case. You can't get those by in your checked duffle/non firearms bag
@@KineticConsulting Good to know, I've never flown without the hard case carrying everything. Thanks.
Do you have any more info on that GPS tracker you use? Great video! Very useful!
It's made by a company called SPOT
Practical and concise as usual. Question: do you carry on your NVG? You mentioned an upcoming carry on video so maybe you'll cover it there. Thanks.
Yes, and I'll have a video on them soon. It's in the que
What do you mean I can’t leave my case under my seat??
Thank you!!! What kind of gps tracker are you using?
It's from SPOT
My dude, how do you pack and carry your NODs? In your carry on?
Can you carry on your NVG’s and helmet?
Yes, you can carry on your helmet and nods. Video is coming
What about traveling with suppressors? Does anything change. Thanks dude
I'd like to hear some insight as well.
You must notify gov when taking a class 3 item across state lines
@@Kyle-oe2vs Except suppressors.
ATF notification probably
Any issues taking items that "aren't allowed" in the host state like 10rd+ mags? Does TSA or whatever agency check your bags again when you arrive, say in CA?
They don't check for that.
@@KineticConsulting sweet. Thanks.
What about when you leave California to go back home? Does TSA at the California airport give you issues regarding “large capacity” mags or SBRs?
@@shibaspeed nope. That's not what they look for man
Honestly it all depends on the TSA Agent
What about using some "higher" security locks like an abloy lock that is harder to pick and resistant to bolt cutters? yay or nay?
Absolutely. I have some for my newer case. This one doesn't have lock holes big enough
@@KineticConsulting silly followup question, have you had issues with TSA cutting locks and such? Reason I ask is DeviantOllam has a few videos of issues with TSA and traveling with firearms, especially to states (CA for instance) where they're more likely to be ignorant about guns and such. As someone who has not flown with a firearm and would like to, just trying to get a better understand.
@@cobra102786 I have had them cut my locks if they needed to inspect the contents and couldn't find me at the gate. Annoying but it happens every once in a while. I've put complaints in but I doubt I'll ever hear back. I just cut their locks off and carry on.
@@KineticConsulting good to know thank you
@@KineticConsulting You cut their locks off? Did they put their locks on after they cut yours? Are you traveling with bolt cutters?
Great Tips!
What model Pelican case is that?
1560
@@KineticConsulting Thank you sir!
This is the first video of yours I like the channel subscribing
I love you dad
I see cherrybalmz in that pelican organizer
At FLL, how early do you usually arrive for a domestic flight?
2 1/2 hours
This case looks like exactly what I've been looking for, except I need to fit 16" uppers. I presume a 16" will not fit in that box? Anybody know which pelican fits that the best?
The 1615 air will
Kinetic Consulting you mentioned you could squeeze a 14.5 in the 1560. Would that work with a 14.5 w a perm attached fh that brings it to 16” total length? Or better to just move up the the 1615?
@@withoutname03 not sure what muzzle device you have but I have a deadair comp on mine and it fits.
does TSA do background checks on the weapons? like is their any extensive work they do like checking background of person or shit
But I like when my thing dingledangs around in boxes!
Excellent video!
Recommended paperwork to have with you?
Jon, what Airline do you usually fly with?
Usually American but it depends
