Smita Patil was my Aunt. I remember meeting her only once when I was about 5. I didnt know her as an actress back then just that she was a wonderful human being. She went out of her way to get pizza for me and my sister once also one of the days of our visit my mom had requested her that she wanted to see a film shoot. I recall it got over late into the night. Smita patil was not in that shot but i recollect but she sent pillows in the car for me and my sister to take a nap. There are very small things but i think they speak volumes about the person. She just went too soon. I think she passed away at the age of 32. She had so much potential.
Smita was a far superior actor. Her acting made you focus and moved you and she was able to do all kinds of roles even in commercial films. In fact she was a successful mainstream actress unlike Shabana who could never succeed as a mainstream actress till now. There's a reason she recognized and promoted the talent of Nana Patekar. She was also a much better human being. Her acting was REAL.
Wow I loved her acting. A great artiste and she had a beautiful arresting face and luminous eyes. And I loved her voice too, her dialogue throw everything. Honestly I think smita patil ji was way way way better an actress than shabana.
She was such an intense actress. And also versatile. Loved her performance in Sadgati and Ardh Satya. Shabana Azmi is good and is capable of portraying great subtlety in her roles but Smita Patil was a powerhouse of an actress. There will never be another quite like her. Sir with due respect I don't agree.Shabana Azmi is a methodical actress.As she was trained her acting is just perfect for respective roles.But Smita Patil was completely different.Her expression,emotion & dialogue delivery was amazing.She has explored beyond the role she played.It was heart touching.Smita was also more good looking than Shabana.

Shabana managed to make a good balance between art and commercial films. She has command over her voice. Smita was my favourite actress. She did outstanding performances in movies like Manthan Bhumika etc. but watching her in Namak Halal doing rain song was uncomfortable.

Being actress should show all characters. Shabana was given some characters that are only been dominated but she tries hard to convert them to dominating which is utter disrespect to the story and direction. Kitna bhi dusra character karo sirf feminist hi dikhti hai . Bore ho gaya wo look dekh ke.

But what I was trying to say was that Shyam Benegal, a critically acclaimed director of very high caliber and all that, but I found that movie extremely poorly made. There is no connection between one scene to the next one. Poorly edited movie. Again, I mean no offense to the departed soul, but sometimes I wonder, isn't something that looked like a masterpiece in past, actually looks extremely ordinary. That's my limited point
