I lived in Merricks and the largest nugget found that I know of was found on the Elgee Park property, I believe it was a 10 oz nugget. I have detected the area but all I found was an old file. You can still see the diggings in some places.
@@OzGeologyOfficial The old creek where it was found still runs thru the property, and the owners are approachable. Write them a letter and ask for permission you may be surprised. The old timers also sank a shaft or two which have now been filled. Let me know if you end up getting permission. You may have more luck with a pan than we did with our detectors.
dude i grew up at Birdrock Beach in Mount Martha.... accoding to that map- my parents house may literally have treasure under it. im starting a super secret tunnel. dont tell anyone okay??
Thanks OzGeology for highlighting this forgotten history, the geology of the Mornington Peninsula is very interesting and unique. Lots of interesting minerals down here, on the ancient basaltic lava flows around Bass Strait and Westernport bay.
Did a bit of panning in Tubbarubba creek back in 1967.got a very small speck of gold and some small sapphires ad rubies.Still got them in a jar somewhere.
I grew up on the Peninsula and went to Dromana Tech just down the road. I cannot remember any time I was told the history of the area I grew up in as a class topic. Mores the pity. At least I am learning things now!
Geebuz dude... I grew up in Bonbeach, and help my dad drill bore water pipes in the mid seventies. It was 90% thick oily black clay with shells. Once we got under that level (iwas 8, don't quote me, 27ft?) The water was pretty good. Smelled a little but clear. Not like it does on the SE Queensland coast. The black clay was like ultra thick grease. Oozed with pressure. To get down to the required depth...would be almost impossible unless it was monster scale. Still... Any idea of bedrock depths around these areas? Love your work 😊
There was a shaft dug at Langwarrin roughly on the westerport hwy between frankston Cranbourne rd and sky rd. It yielded gold but was abandoned due to constant flooding. We found some traces on our property at langwarrin south where a clay pocket meets a sand one.
@@OzGeologyOfficial on Tubbarubba Rd near the intersection with Balnarring Rd there is a heritage site with something to do with Chinese gold mining as well. That’s a few properties up from my mate’s parents place. It’s not well signposted

My father found gold in Mt Martha but said the lead was minimal! Lucky to get an oz! The geology is on a fault line!

Very cool! Thanks for sharing. Flooding is definitely the main hindrance if you don’t have a strong enough pump that’s for sure.

Larger sapphires were down point leo, and no, you can't legally prospect for them there anymore.
My mates parents property is on Bulldog creek in Merricks North and I think there is an old Chinese diggers camp on it.
