- A lot of people say that when at the pattern board we should rest the gun on something and then aim the rib and bead at the cross on the pattern board...if we just mount our gun...look at the cross and shoot...then we are replicating what we actually do when we are shooting clays...using this method we may actually discover that our gun is not shooting where we are looking...is that not a valuable piece of information to have?
Very good advice! What amazes me is most people when they buy a rifle they spend lots of time sighting in a rifle and seeing where the rifle shoots. BUT, when it comes to a shotgun very few people do what you so wisely suggest. And that is sighting in your Shotgun. I have seen some brand-name shotguns do some pretty bizarre things so how are you going to know what is happening if you don't test it first. And also realize you'll have to probably try at least 10 different brands of cartridges before one will work Optimum for that shotgun and choke combination.
Tim... very well said...good on you!!!
Good advice. I was at a turkey shoot 2 weeks ago and a guy had a shotgun that was in the family for decades. He wasn't hitting well and I asked him when he last patterned it. He said it hadn't been shot in 40 years but he KNEW it shot a tight pattern. I laughed and went home with the meat I won with a patterned Browning.
Keep up the informative videos.
Good on you TtJj...that's a great story...when I get my new gun that's the first thing I'm going to do...stay well...Roger
I've been shooting for years but recently got into clay shooting. Your videos have been extremely helpful. Happy to be a subscriber.
OldDominion G&G...thank you for subscribing...stay well...and happy shooting...Roger Pace
Great video sir, yes your right about the cartridges shooting with holes in them. Crazy but so true, it also looks like the cheaper ones have many holes in them
Rudy...good on you and thank you for watching...stay well and happy shooting !!!
Hiya Roger, just started shooting post retirement, Found your vids, teaching me a lot without the bull, good common sense. Intend to work my through them all. I was lucky enough to acquire a Browning 325 that fits like a glove re your recommendations. Keep up the good work. Thanks, Peter, England.
Peter...good to hear from you ...and thank you for your kind comments...enjoy your shooting...and I'm glad to have been of some help...stay well and Happy Shooting...Roger
Hi Roger, I've patterned my guns before and always did it the wrong way apparently. I used to AIM using the front bead !!
I took your advice and LOOKED at the center cross and found a tremendous difference.
A really super piece of advice.
Thanks and keep up the good work.
simonbon...some people say you should benchrest the shotgun and aim at the cross using the beads...I can't see the point of that because we just look and shoot ...and our goal is to get the gun to shoot where we look...thanks and stay well.
More great advice, thanks Roger.
Thank you Chris!!!
You're welcome Roger...Great Show
Thank you for watching. Much appreciated. Stay well and Happy shooting.!!!
You have come a long way Mr. Pace. It says 3.8 K subscribers now. It is because of your charm and common sense methods for basic trap concepts that we all need to know and be reminded of.
Also, I love your old school marker graphics, no CGG here, just charts from the mind of Roger Pace.
Keep up the great work sir.
See the bird, shoot the bird, I always say that before each pull and it clears my mind and makes me smile because I am a student of Roger Pace.

Ralph...thank you...stay well...Roger
Great video roger
Thank you...I wasn't too sure about this topic...because it's not the conventional way of using a pattern board...stay well...Roger
Just bought my first shotgun, and embarrassed myself at the skeet range. I'm glad I found your videos.
John...congratulations on your first shotgun...it takes time but pretty soon you will be happy with your progress...good on you!
How’s progress 5 years on John?
@@JMc.D I had to stop shooting a year ago when I left my job, but before that I was consistently scoring over 20/25 at the skeet field. Thanks for asking!
I think its very important to make your gun fit your needs, Make it comfortable for ya too. Put a should sling on it ect ect
so the bottom barrel shoots first?! And how do you shoot from the same barrel repeatedly?! does the 3/4 choke go on the bottom one and the full on the top?
Yes full on top!!!
Great Videos
Laz...thank you!
You should use a different thumbnail for every video, makes finding and identifying specific videos easier in a sea of vidoes all with the same preview image.
Nearly 7000 subs now well done
Thank you...and stay well!!!
Nice video Roger, keep it up!
Thanks Marc...stay well
Your a absolute gentleman Rodger.
Keep up the good work .
Any knowledge on a beretta dt11..?
Malachy...no great knowledge on the dt11...I have shot one several times they are a good gun and very well made...one guy at the club had issues with his dt11...eventually Beretta gave him a new one...but overall i think they are a good gun..stay well and thanks
Hi Roger, great videos. I shoot primarily skeet and was wondering how far away I should stand to pattern the gun for skeet.
Skeet is shot closer than trap...but patterning it is the same...shoot 4 shots at 16-20 yds AIMING with the beads...then move to 35 yds and just shoot 4 shots at the target WITHOUT looking at the gun...that will tell you if your gun shoots where you look...if left right up or down then you will have to make adjustments ...stay well!
Hello from the USA! How do you like the 686 SP sporting 12/30? I’m getting ready to buy one and I’ll be using it for sporting clays, late season skiddish high dove, and waterfowl. It will be primarily used however for sporting clays
James ...i was very happy with my 686...i traded it in for a 690 because my 686 did not have an adjustable stock...it is a good reliable gun!!!
Does the adjustable stock afford you better breaks?
What good advice!!!
Hello Roger,I really appreciate your straightforward and if I use the word simplistic please don't be offended because that's exactly what people are able to remember. How many people on the pattern plate are told not to 'aim', but you were much more correct and understand "don't look down the rib and use the bead. It's obvious but only when you've actually been told.question felt or plaswad for you?
Peter...good to hear from you...if i understand the question correctly then I only use plastic wads...thanks...stay well...Roger
G'day Roger. I have a question about patterning shotguns. I recently bought a new gun (Churchill sporter) so I head out to the club. I found that I was missing more than usual. (I usually shoot 100 out of 100 consistently in DTL single barrel with my old shotgun) So I took the gun to a place where I could check how it patterns. The bottom barrels point of impact was a lot lower than I had anticipated. The centre of the sheet did wear some of the impact but most of it was way under which explains why I was missing at the club. The top barrel on the other hand was about 70/30 which I'm fine with. My question is do you think the two barrels should have such a different point of impact at 20metres?
Thanks in advance and keep the great content coming.
Cheers mate
Gamoto...the bottom barrel is usually 60/40 or 70/30 ...top and bottom barrels should converge at 40 yards...pattern the gun at 40 yards (the distance we usually shoot the clay at) and see how the pattern is. Good luck and best wishes!!!
Thanks for your help Roger. Hope you have a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Cheers
I'd be sending that gun back to the distributor. Ask them to check it out when in fact the two impact points are different they should give you a different gun.
Great video and some important, useful advise, Roger. Thank you!
hello sir . the procedure you told in the above video holds good for skeet gun or a trap gun ?
SAATHVIK...yes...a skeet gun is usually set up to shoot flatter than a trap gun...stay well!
Roger. . thanks for all the great info..!! keep up the great work! maybe a outdoor shooting video soon? we would love to see u shoot.
Michael...yes...I should do a video of a round of DTL ...good idea...stay well!
good vidéo .very interested by how setting the pitch...but for me It depends mainly in which direction (angle) you shoot.for Trap shooting for example and as every targets go up the main angle to setthe pitch is 30 degrees above the horizontal Line.
Tintin...the pitch of the gun is the angle of the back of the butt stock relative to the barrels...if a gun has zero pitch...when you stand it up ...the barrels will be perpendicular to the wall...good to hear from you ...stay well
Good stuff !!
Terry...thank you ...much appreciated...stay well...Roger
nice video as always Roger! :-)
Yours too...I saw your clay shooting one with all the different cartridges...Stay well...Roger
Are we going to have a guess at what rogers new gun is, I'm going with Beretta 692 black edition 😉
Beau...You are very astute...and almost correct...still waiting for my permit to acquire from the police...stay well and good on you...Roger
Beau...how close were you...it's a 690...I was too tight to buy a 692...stay well...Roger
