Good topic to cover. When I started surfing I had no clue fins can have such an impact. It was always one fin that never came out. To those out there who were like me, try buying a new fin before buying a new board.
100%
Love this insight, a couple of years ago actually I was the exact same - stuck to a hybrid fin and never changed it, since I started experimenting with shapes and sizes had made a big difference, now looking to broaden my horizons more with fin position, hence the video haha,
Really appreciate the insight 🙏🤙
Always wondered this. Love the videos where you discuss the nuances of fin design in different conditions.
Thanks so much! Super glad they’re somewhat informative 🤙 really appreciate the support 🙏
I was able to get my first board in 1962. It had 50/50 rails, little rocker and the fins (we called then skegs) were very wide with little sweep and set within an inch of the tail. At 15 and 110 pounds I never could get that 9'2" board to turn. The modern boards with harder rails especially at the fins plus moving my fin forward makes my board perfect for this old guy (who has never gotten a nose ride lol).
I love looking at some of the boards from the 60’s and the difference in design, I actually just got my hands on an old mal ‘66 I believe with the fin like you said about an inch from the tail, wild feeling but super cool to surf!! Should have included it in this edit!! Hahah 🤙🙏
Thanks for that Ben. Keep it rolling.merry Christmas 👍
No worries David!! Thanks so much, hope it was useful and merry Christmas!! 🙏🤙
Awesome video Ben! Really enjoyed the addition of the GoPro in this one. So great to hear all the comments as you’re going down the line. Would be super keen to see more in future! Combined with the shot from the beach works so well
Another great video, thank you Ben!
No worries at all!! So stoked you liked it, thanks heaps!! 🙏🙏🤙
Great vid Ben, very helpful
Cheers Aaron!!! 🙏🤙🤙 hope you’re getting some waves!
Oh man! Loved the organ at the start. Made me actually laugh out loud. Keep ‘em comin’, Ben ✌️
Haha 😂
Thanks so much - hope you liked it!!! 🙏🙏🤙

Yes, these are some of the questions I’ve had about fin position setups (for me, it’s either 2+1 or single, then center fin forward or back, and when to change w/conditions or season?) And I got a pretty good answer from someone here locally on YT w/a similar board to mine, but it’s very good to get a thorough demonstration and explanation from you. Your waves (and cloudy weather there?) also seem similar to those at our beachbreak here. Cheers and Happy Holidaze to you from here in the NE USA, Ben.🇺🇸🎄🏄♂️🇦🇺🤙
Some great rides even in the messy conditions. Interesting video too with the live mic. Thanks. 🤙🤙
Haha very messy conditions… I was hoping for better waves but need to take what you’re given sometimes haha 😂
@@BenConsidine hate to admit it, but some of my best sessions are in messy conditions… kind of amazing when you find a gem hidden in the mess…with some luck can join sections and allows you to go with the unpredictable flow🤣🤙
If you want some fun… try the difference between a narrow base fin (like a squirrel fin) and a wide base fin (like the pivot fin). I find the differences pretty dramatic.
I’m a big fan of the pivot fin forward 😊👍🏼
Ben, what are your thought regarding single fin vs 2-1 fin set up (single fin with 2 small side fins). My 9’2” NSP epoxy board came with 2-1 fins with single fin in center of box. Have not changed it and am curious how removing 2 side fins will affect the board. Will have to try it and see. Thanks
On my nine six I like my fin 1" and 1/2" at the back of the box as I get insane drive & excellent maneuverability using a GREEENOUGH type fin.
I like the longer drawn out carves as opposed to the snappy tail pivots that look sort of “leggy”. I like to use my hips and lower body to make longer curving turns.
I use a 9’0 thruster and have a single more raked fin on my noserider…might be 8-9 inches ..Guess I’m more HP style. LOL!
i really thought it was the opposite.... thabks for clearing that out 😅
Hey John, no worries at all!!! Hope it was helpful 🤙🤙🙏
On my 10' log my fin is all the way forward in the box and it seems to go quite well for me so i have not changed the position. But i agree if surf is a big bigger the fin at the back will get more control.
I’m so glad you’re able to understand with subtitles! 🙂🤙
I used google translate to understand your message - I really appreciate your support it means a lot! 🙏
I love pivot fins, but in bigger waves they can be tricky in my opinion, over 2 foot waves I prefer a more raked/Greenough style fin. When I use a pivot I like the fin pushed all the way back - I hope you found the video useful!!! Yewww 🤙🤙🤙
I usa raked fin and I’ve found that if ya put the fin forwards for turns and at the back for drive
Yeah interesting! I would say I agree - if by drive you're meaning hold and control through a turn? love messing around with this sort of stuff!
Hey Ben just out of curiosity how many inches is the fin from the tail when it’s all the way back in the box?
Hey!!! Sorry for the late reply here btw!
I believe its about 8 inches forwards from the edge!
thats a tiny finbox for a longboard dang im surprized you noticed and differnce at all
Are those lories in the background?
Im not sure haha 😂
Lol perfect timing - I put my pivot fin all the way forward the day before last to test it out and found it way too easy to bog my rails.
I was stubborn though and cbf going in to change it so I just adapted for 2 hours 😂
Hahaha so good, that’s how it felt for me out there and feel like the video showed it too, just super super tippy from rail to rail compared to normal where I have the fin all the way back, interesting feeling haha
