  • We're planting a plethora of bulbs and corms this time of year, but luckily we don't have to wait for ALL of them to bloom in the springtime. Some can be planted in late summer/early fall for autumn blooms.

    Crocus pulchellus albus is in full bloom here today. I used to have the type species seeding around in my old garden. It hybridizes easily with C. speciosus too.
    Quite a few colchicum in flower here also and lots of white & a few pink Cyclamen hederifolium. Autumn is like a second spring in some parts of the mediterranean. I've seen entire hillsides gold with sternbergias in southern greece & crocus everywhere.
    There are fall blooming narcissi, scillas and many more to try.

      Fantastic. What part of the world / grow zone are you in? C. hederifolium are also popping up in our lawn after I planted a dozen or so.... I wish I planted them out of the lawn though, because the grass sometimes obscures them. Autumn really is my favorite season. Favorite time to plant as well!

    Are you planning to harvest the saffron spice? I would be worried about mistaking the saffron crocuses and the colchicum which are poisonous. How hard is it to tell them apart? (I know you probably won't be planting those together, but bulbs and corms get moved by animals sometimes.. :D )

    you could try Sternbergia too. the yellow looks so cheering in the autumn weather and would go really well with purples and white.

      Thanks for bringing Sternbergia up. I forgot to mention those. I've ordered them for this year as well with plans of planting them earlier in September, but serious delays in bulb shipments here. And if the longshoremen are going on strike today, I wonder if they will even come in.

    Hmmm, might have to just get me some fall blooming bulbs. Have thought about planting saffron, but didn't know there were a lot of others.

    The time to add nutrients for bulbs is *after* they have flowered and will be building up for the next year. I would think the critters would dig up the raised beds

    Also, you know what goes great with spring bulbs? The quacking of runner ducks. Just saying.

    Hi! What is the brand of the knife that you used in the video? Do you recommend any particular brand?

    Perhaps I missed it in the video. Based on my experience with bulbs, they are finicky with soil. They will rot in clay and sometimes even loam is too wet for them. In Holland, they oftentimes plant them into straight sand. So drainage is really important for bulbs. I'm in DC where 1/8 of an inch down you sit brickmakers quality clay so I would add for those reading this comment that if you are planting bulbs and want success, to start with the soil. If you are in clay like me, I'd suggest the trench or bowl method. If you want a row of tulips or crocus, did a trench and back fill it with nice fluffy soil and maybe even some same mixed in. You can add an inch or two to the bottom of the trench then lay out your bulbs, then burry them. Same goes for the bowl method, dig a nice big bowl, add some soil to the bottom, lay out the bulbs, then bury them with the rest of the fluffy/sandy clay. No need to worry about them drying out because it is fall and winter where there is a lot of moisture in the ground. By the time spring and summer hits (for Spring/Summer bulbs, not fall flowering bulbs) they will have roots and good access to water those early summer hot days.
    Also, everyone says to plant in the fall but if you are cheap like me and don't mind the old, wait till winter when the bulbs go on sale, then buy a million, get a bulb auger for your power drill and go ham! The ground will thaw in early spring and the roots will establish then, and bonus, you will get bulbs later into summer and avoid that weird gap between Spring blooms and summer blooms.

      It can be fairly common in UK and in Europe to plant bulbs in regular lawns - not any that get water logged. But it seems to work, or it can do.

    • @tomasck2973
      @tomasck2973 Месяц назад

      @@FireflyOnTheMoon many areas of europe, though fully wet, still have low pluviosity compared to most of eastern north america and other subtropical climates. You guys can grow cyclamen in the ground, I couldn't even dream of that
