    I’m wondering if those extra posts had spot lights on them ? I’ve had a couple of games with similar and in both cases they had spot lots that were removed . Maybe they were going to install at factory and decided to go a different direction.

    I fully understand your views on the LEDs. For the stuff toward the back, the warmer look of incandescent would look better. Now, the stuff hidden under red lenses toward the front, you could get away with LEDs there since the light is filtered, and then you run into timing issues (LEDs are more responsive and jarring, and cut off faster).
    There's a workaround for some of the LED behavior, and I'm surprised I haven't heard of any manufactured like this. But a small electrolytic capacitor would fix the timing. I don't know what size, but maybe 1-10 mFd.
    To get into how LEDs differ takes some basic chemistry knowledge, and I'm no expert. Light is released when electrons are stimulated to move to the next ring. That increases the potential energy. Then when the stimulation is removed (or the potential outreaches the energy needed to sustain that), the energy is released as light. All artificial light works about the same at the core level. You are using energy to excite electrons. So you either heat a filament, burn something, ionize a gas, or apply electricity directly to a semiconductor junction. The process is different, but what happens at the molecular level is very similar. With incandescent, you are heating the filament with electricity. In an LED, the electricity itself is what excites the semiconductor material. That is about the fastest way, but you are not building as much potential energy. You have no reserve, so when you remove the electricity, it goes out right then. So putting a capacitor there can make the behavior seem more like an incandescent, since a capacitor has to take the time to charge and discharge, causing the light to start and stop later. The filament acts to heat what a capacitor does to electricity, adding latency to the light turning on and off.
    So overall, I get the objection to LEDs. When directly exposed or there is a clear or white filter, the warmer look looks better. There is more psychological attraction there. You even notice similar with street lamps. Mercury, fluorescent, and most LED tech don't look as nice as sodium lamps (that look closer to incandescent while still being bright). And when it is cool outside, you may feel warmer when looking at warmer-colored lights. Then, for faster-blinking things, incandescents are less jarring to the eyes and brain.

      Thumbs up just for the time to post all that, would be interesting to experiment with different value caps and see what difference there is, if any

    • @PlumGurly
      @PlumGurly 2 месяца назад

      @@Jason-lx3zu -- That is a good idea. You'd think that the delay in charging and discharging would simulate a filament in terms of latency.
      In some applications, it is the color of incandescents that folks like, and in others, it is the reaction time or latency. This makes for softer attacks and decays and is less jarring.

    • @eDoc2020
      @eDoc2020 2 месяца назад +1

      @@PlumGurly As somebody who's rebuilt the driver circuit in a broken LED bulb I can 100% confirm that a large capacitor makes the response more incandescent-like. You miss out on the color shift when dimming but I don't think that really maters (and can be simulated with two LEDs and a tad more circuitry).
      In terms of color, good warm white LEDs look pretty darn close. Of course nearly all the drop-in replacements on the market seem to use the lowest-quality cool white LEDs they can find.
      In the end it's all about money. It would be trivial to make an LED bulb which is basically undetectable in terms of light output but it will probably cost a few dollars each. Pinball would probably be the largest market but who wants to spend hundreds on bulbs? Private owners will have the machine turned off so they'll never see power savings or increased longevity, operators will just use cheap LEDs because they're good enough.

    Great work guys. …Personally I would NEVER use black rubbers on a pinball machine. …When you see the sticky black residue all over your playfield, why would you line up for more of the same??…. White rubbers look fresh and clean, and will keep your playfield much cleaner than black rubbers. I just 5hink they are a horrible choice. Same with the globes - long live incandescant bulbs….warm and wonderful.
