Discipline and encouraging strong work ethic is important, yes. Leading by example is great. Teaching blind obedience and having so much control that your children can't branch out and explore their own individual interests and become their own person is wrong. They are people, not property.
There are different ways to get through to these two young people. The young man was having problems with his biological father and why his mom did not let him have his dad in his life for so long. The young lady has both parents, but needed some motivation to obey her parents and have discipline.
That idea of "you cant say no to your mom/dad" honestly needs to be left in the past, it can cause major issues with those kids being able to set boundaries

The strict father was even using guilt tripping. Pushing the idea that saying no to their parents should make them feel bad. Kids should Never say NO to there Mom unless they are being asked to do something criminal or vile. Chores, dressing appropriately, etc. is NOT Vile.

The strict father was even using guilt tripping. Pushing the idea that saying no to their parents should make them feel bad. Saying it's embarrassing that they didn't want to do the work at the thrift shop. Those are forms of guilt tripping. That makes them even more vulnerable to potential gaslighting later on, because they're taught to that they should feel responsible for the other person's feelings.
