  • After a drawn-out region-by-region shutdown, analogue telly in the UK finally faded to black on 23 October 2012. Luckily, BBC Northern Ireland were there to give it a suitable send off. And here that send off is.

John Logic Baird was demonstrating high definition (1,000 lines plus) colour television, and 3D, in the 1930’s. A few of the projection receivers still exist. It's a shame that WW2 brought an end to the service, and that we ended up with 405 line monochrome for around 20 years. 75 years after Baird we had 1080i 2D colour. Still waiting for 3D to become available.

This was a day after my 9th birthday, except I wasn't in NI so the switchover happened approximately 6 months sooner back in april 2012. Time flies. I still remember that small CRT TV I had in my room back then, before getting a digital TV later on. The only non digital TV was the one in the main room, however that was fine as it was provided by virgin media's cable service. admittedly it was hit and miss if you got a good service which was fairly typical for some customers on VM (and there was also a full on 2 day outage for the internet too back then at least on the service we had, ultimately was caused by an outdated router since by the time they replaced the router with their newest one at the time it stopped the outages and problems we kept having) I won't ever miss not having virgin, since the place we moved to about 5 years down the line didn't have VM in the area - and even though it exists now it isn't active at either property we've been at.
I still find it completely shocking that nothing like this is being broadcasted to let people know about the pstn switchoff in 2025 though as people who are left on copper technology after that time (i.e 1st jan 2026) will lose complete access to the internet and home phone calls. As it stands currently that's what is going to happen here - no ultrafast full fibre just old copper technologies and hybrid fibre which will still suffer the same problem as traditional adsl. It does seem as if they're building out full fibre now in this area however it states no date available for this postcode currently which is only slightly worrying when you consider the stop sell date of all copper broadband services is later this year in September.

    Very lucky to have that!
But still my grandparents also still receive Analogue channels, usually those that would normally be exclusive to cable and satellite. For example, would you believe that we don't receive outdoor antenna based TVP Info, but instead we get Pay TV exclusives like CNN (which is foreign to us, by the way, since we live in Central Europe) and TVN24?

    Well, yes.
But then buying a TV, unto itself, isn't free, is it? Paying your TV licence isn't free either, is it? The electricity you use to power your TV also isn't free, right?
As always, "free" is a relative term. Watching TV has never been an entirely cost-free exercise at any point.
TV used to be 405 lines. Black and white. 4:3.
In the grand scheme of things, £20 for a digital tuner (and only for older TVs without it built-in) is probably the most modest "upgrade" price ever offered.
