Thanks for an interesting and helpful video. Having a white background can seem bland, but it makes for an ideal canvas to add gels and create some fun images.

Thanks a lot, Ed. Very informative. I really like your using the 3D models to illustrate the positions, the distances, the angles, etc. of the subject, the lights, and the background. Very clear. Thanks again.

Thanks. For anyone interested, the 3D illustrations are created with a free software called, Blender.org. It’s got a steep learning curve but it’s very powerful.

Well presented Ed!, I have found that metering the back of the subject to match the front of the subject would be the maximum white without causing the ethereal effect.(Eg key light measured at say f8, adjust background light, meter facing the background but with the meter placed at the back of the subjects head to read f8 too) Gavin Hoey also has a video on this.

Great video, Ed. I use a popup cloth background, and it gets wrinkled folded up in storage. Solution: a clothes steamer. Works fast, not expensive, and saves me a ton of time trying to remove wrinkles in Photoshop

Remember: Setup the key/fill (the lights for the SUBJECT) and lock-in the proper exposure for the subject FIRST. Then dial the power of the background lights up as needed to get a good white background. That's an easy way to make sure your subject is properly exposed despite the background exposure.

      what about full lenght shots?

Same thing applies; light the subject as you normally would (for a full length shot) then light up the background separately.
